So I'm on my way back from school and I'm coming onto Bells Ferry of off I-575N and there's this red Cavalier with rims, a drop, and some random APC fartcan exhaust. I laugh and go around him, stopping at the next light. Well Slim Shady decides to pull up next to me at the light at try to laugh at my Yaris. I'm like, alright then, here we go. I silently rev my 1.5L beast and the wait for the light.

The light turns green. The Cavalier makes this "rising from the dead" groning sound and takes off like a fat man trying to ice skate. I dump the Yaris at some random RPM (No tach) and spin for a quick second before gaining traction and launching like a lawnmower on crack. The Cavalier continues to fight itself at it struggles to gain speed thru it's lackluster, slushbox transmission. I shift the Yaris hard into the second and it scrubs the tires. We're about 10 seconds into the race and about to hit 70mph. Oh shizat! He's already back at my rear tires. I shift into third and it's pretty much over. The Yaris proceeds to pull away as it painstakingly climbs to 85mph in near silence. The Cavalier gives up and falls back, the exhaust bellowing into the night.

I laugh, turn into my neighborhood, and realize that some poor b@stard just lost a race to a Yaris. Oh well, it made me feel better.

+1 for da Yaris!

I'm always blasting away from the stoplight and I've yet to encounter any serious challengers. I'd have a bunch of nibbles, but they'd quickly back-off since their manhood is on chopping block for loosing to a dinky little Yaris.

What I do get alot of, is people trying to box me out on the highway when I'm slicing through traffic. I suppose getting passed by the dinky little Yaris is upsetting when you're driving a big macho SUV (or equivalent). On those occasions, I'll drop 2 gears and give the unenlightened (or dumbass) an education lesson.

If someone is passing you, give them space, the quicker you let them by, the faster they'll be out of your hair.

Well, nice story! But great thing for ya you didn't race against a new Ecotec's powered Cavalier, because you would have been smoked out in the first three seconds. GM actually rate the 2.2L Ecotec engine at (it was corrected/increased three time since 2003) :

148 HP @ 5600 RPM
152 TQ @ 4200 RPM

This engine is just... impressive!! BTW it was still underrated by GM, cause some peoples I know put thier stock Ecotec on dyno and get 145 HP... AT WHEELS!! That's mean the stock engine may have around 155-160 HP at crank.

Just an example. Even if my Cavalier is automatic, on a stopped race I smoke with no difficulty a manual Mazda3 GT Sport (2.3L rated at 160 HP by Mazda) and moreover, we was two persons in the Cavy while the guy was alone in his Mazda.

PS : I stop to race before 120 KM/h and we was on a sraight two ways road limited at 100 KM/h. I'm not that kind of jerk who race 150 KM/h in the city lanes!

"When you are busy focusing on the complete stranger you are trying to race, your attention is not focused where it should be..."

Well said.

Personally, it's not about the racing, but I'm always curious to see what the other car can do (without taking any chances which can get me busted or worst). The best is when you're getting tailed by another car in the twisties and if they're still there, at the end of it, it's hats off. If you're not focused on the road, it's not fun, it's just the testosterones talking.:burnrubber:

I think I raced one of these in my 1993 Del Sol Si (130HP). I was wondering how a damn Cavalier was keeping up with me from a standing start and I was definately "giving it all we got, Captain".:respekt:

Racing on any public road = not cool...

When you are busy focusing on the complete stranger you are trying to race, your attention is not focused where it should be...I don't know about you, but when I'm driving aggressively, I'm pretty focused on the road ahead.

Also, FYI, the road was two lane in one direction with a 6-foot medium on the left seperating the opposing lanes. No neighborhoods, no traffic, no stoplights or turn lanes for about 3 miles. A pretty clear shot.

Even if you are the best driver on the road...Even highly trained race car drivers get in serious accidents, and they are on a closed circuit, all going the same direction, with no external distractions...They also assume the risk as part of their job, the general public should not be put at risk because you feel the need to prove the Yaris is the little engine that could...Actually, driving on a closed circuit with professional drivers is considered safer than driving on a public road since all drivers are close to the same driving level.

lol @ little engine that could

I have a serious permanent physical disability because of another person's poor judgement while operating a motor vehicle, while that person walked away unscathed... Stop thinking of your own glory, and think of the rest of the general public who are not involved in your F & F antics...I have a permanent physical disbility from a military instructors' mistake. Save the pity story because we've all got them.

You make it sound like I'm an egotistical glory-hog who drives under semi's and races thru neighborhoods against anything and everything I see while blasting rap music and flashing my neons. I don't race people thru traffic and I sure as hell don't speed thru congested areas. Get off your high-horse.

Wanna make a real difference? Jump off your soapbox and join the law enforcement.

Personally, it's not about the racing, but I'm always curious to see what the other car can do (without taking any chances which can get me busted or worst). If you're not focused on the road, it's not fun, it's just the testosterones talking.:burnrubber:Pretty much the same here. I'd love to get someone on me in the twisties but, unless it's a straight line, most American's don't know how to drive over 25mph.

Those new ecotecs are pretty nice... my buddy had a Cobalt with the 2.2L. Way faster than my Yaris... for now hehe. The Ecotec is a great engine on any level. They can make quite a bit of power and are easy to modify.

Someone has always got to be there to knock you down a notch don't they...WTF?There's a preacher in every batch. Just take it in strides.

Amen, Ran. Awesome story!

I automatically hate anything with APC stamped on it. "American Products Company".... the most generic name ever, because they re-brand every kind of automotive knick-knacky piece of junk China can spit out.

I recently had a rental Cobolt for 8 days. I suppose it had the Ecotec engine (it was the top-line LTZ with sunroof and alloy wheels). Anyways, the car (which was automatic) had big gearings, but the engine still had lots of low end grunt and some serious pulling power at the lower rpms. I'd recommend it to anyone who wanted all the frills of a luxury car at 17K (US) price tag. Even though the engine was gutsy, it still weighs over 3200lb and doesn't have the highreving advantage as the Hondas/Toyota engine. So, in a race, it'll probably be the same as my manual liftback Yaris.

In a race between that 2.2L Cobalt and my 1.5L Yaris, I promise you the Cobalt would win... that thing is quick. I agree with the luxury car "frills" at a good price, its not bad... for a Chevy. :iono:
