For those who are new to YarisWorld, Bambo was our little stuffed panda friend who loved to travel. For two to three weeks, Bambo visited a different YW member and documented his travels by photo. Bambo had many harrowing adventures, including being lost in Thailand during the 2008 riots. Unfortunately, Bambo has become lost in Mexico. Luckily his twin, Bamboo, also loves to travel, and has decided to take it upon himself to continue Bambo's tradition.

The original creator of the Bambo concept was a YarisWorld member by the name of NemesisZ. NemesisZ became unreachable after the hack so *MAD DOG* volunteered to take over running the thread. Due to unforeseen circumstances, *MAD DOG* is unable to continue administering the thread. I've volunteered to take over, so let's get this going.

Below is the current list.

Key
Bold members have had Bambo, and their posts are linked.
Red text shows Bambo's current activity.
Blue text shows Bamboo's current activity.
+(date) indicates a member's request to see Bamboo a second time around and the date in which they will lock in. For one month from request, first time requests will take precedence.
+L indicates a member's request to see Bamboo a second time around is locked. First timers can request to cut that member by PM request.
VP indicates a member who has voluntarily passed his or her turn. They will be placed immediately next in the list when they become available for a Bamboo visit.

Some Rules
-If you have been inactive for more than a month when your turn comes up, you will be skipped. If you return to find that you've been skipped, please PM me.
-The approximate amount of time for a visit is 2 weeks.
-You must give me your name, address and phone number before I approve that Bamboo gets sent to you. This is an extra precaution so we don't lose him again.

Guess who arrived at my doorstep yesterday?:wub:

I guess it's true what they say, good things come to those who wait ...

This little guy looks very much like Bambo's twin brother but he didn't say his name. What's his name?!!!

Anyway, he says hello, and asks that you all please forgive him if he doesn't write for a few days, but he's exhausted from his trip, and he just wants to chill for a few days.

Here he is, chilling on the couch right now, hooking up with some pretty cool music on TV

Across the street from the Apple store is the Ferrari store.

Bamboo immediately noticed the Formula in the window, went in, introduced himself
as the YarisWorld world traveler and asked if we could take a few pictures.

The minute Bamboo said "Toyota Yaris" they treated him like a VIP :bow:
cleared the store for him, and even let him sit in the car for a minute, well kinda

We started the day by picking up some coffee to go at the local coffee shop

(uploading more pix in a few)

tomato
11-10-2009, 11:54 PM
After getting his coffee, Bamboo decided to take a walk in the neighborhood to see how many Yarii he could find.

We know the last one isn't a Yaris, but Bamboo really liked the colors

There used to be a cute modded one Bamboo would have really liked, but he moved.

Since we haven't had any luck at the mall last week, we decided to head out to Fisherman's Wharf (a highly touristic area of San Francisco) to see if they could find Bamboo something to wear.

The only thing we found in Bamboo's size was a pink T-shirt saying "San Francisco."
Bamboo wasn't sure about wearing pink, so we decided to keep looking.

That's OK, Bamboo made a bunch of friends that day

tomato
11-11-2009, 12:11 AM
It was a really nice day so decided to forget about the t-shirts for a while and just go sight-seeing instead.

Bamboo really wanted to see the Sea Lions at Pier 39.

Sure, Bamboo no problem. Here we are. Can you hear them bark at the tourists?

Er.. can you please turn around so we can see your face? That's better!

Can you see the Sea Lions, too? OK, I'll zoom the last shot.

Bamboo wanted to pay his respects since it's Veteran's Day.

Today Bamboo was thinking about veterans and soldiers everywhere, including some members of this board, who are serving abroad right now.

Bamboo dedicates this post and these pictures to them.

Not far from the touristic area of Fishermans' Wharf, you can visit the USS Pampanito (a WW2 submarine) and the SS JEREMIAH O'BRIEN, a Liberty ship (WW2 era).

This is everything you ever want to know about the submarine:

I know it's hard to see but on one of the pictures (above and the first one below) you can see the island of Alcatraz, where they shot a couple of famous movies, including Escape from Alcatraz, with Clint Eastwood

You can visit parts of the prison, and many tourists take the ferry to the island and do the tour. We'll try to get you a better picture of Alcatraz before Bamboo leaves San Francisco.

We conclude this Veteran's Day special with a couple of pictures Bamboo insisted we take (Pic #3 of Bamboo sitting on the missile could have gotten us in trouble, but who can resist a panda World Traveler's request )

Bamboo went to his first YarisWorld official meet, in Milpitas, CA.

If you look really carefully, 3rd picture from the top down, 3rd car from the left (if you count the little piece of red car in the corner), you'll see something sticking out of the hood of a black car: that's Bamboo proudly attending his first official YarisWorld meet :thumbup::thumbup:

OK, Bamboo visited a couple more San Francisco neighborhoods today and we're getting much closer to finding a shirt, so that's good news, because it's been a frustrating long search.

I meant to ask someone at the Nor Cal meet to take a pic of Bamboo and me, but we started talking about cars and mods and the Bamboo was comfortably sitting on someone's hood, making new friends, and I completely spaced out, my bad.

I took this shot last week when I showed Bamboo around North Beach and Chinatown (photos will be posted shortly).

San Francisco has one of the largest Chinese community in North America.
Don't quote me on this, but I believe it is the oldest, and the second largest, after Vancouver.

Chinatown is also one of the oldest neighborhood of San Francisco, if not the oldest.
Naturally Bamboo wanted to have a look.
He had a grand old time there, and I was surprised to discover that he speaks Chinese fluently,
and already knew some of the locals.

Have a look for yourself :)

Bamboo wanted to go through the tourist shops to see if he could find a t-shirt his size. No luck today.
At the license plate shop, Bamboo looked long and hard but couldn't find one with "bamboo" on it.
Bamboo bought a few postcards for the YarisWorld friends his brother told him about.

tomato
11-18-2009, 02:17 AM
Bamboo started to get a little hungry and decided to go deeper into the heart of Chinatown.
He seemed to know where he was going, so I just followed him.
That's when I realized that not only he can speak Chinese, but he can also read the signs.
Nobody seemed to mind Bamboo looking closely at the grains and vegetables.
I'm pretty sure Bamboo had a little piece of chicken when the store-keeper was looking the other way. Oh, well.

If you stay in San Francisco long enough, you are bound to see
some kind of protest or demonstration, especially in the Spring and Summer.
Don't worry, these guys are usually non-violent types.
The other day, Bamboo and I were was walking down Market St. (Photo #1),
when Bamboo spoted some kind of disturbance on the other side of the street near the Palace hotel.
There was a strike going on. (Photo #2)

If you come to San Francisco, you'll want to visit North Beach.
You might even stop for a beer at the Vesuvio.
Bamboo couldn't take his eyes off that neon sign, as you can see
North Beach used to be an all-Italian neighborhood.
In the last 20 years, I've seen it shrink to just a couple of blocks,
and Chinatown has been expanding in its place.
There are some interesting painted murals in North Beach; this one is
right at the edge of Chinatown.
The last shot isn't exactly a mural, but Bambo was really intrigued by this
odd local custom, what do you think?

The Bank of America building is not the tallest in the city anymore,
but probably one of those under the most scrutiny these days.
Since 9.11, the security guys have become pretty strict
and they usually don't like people taking pictures,
even outside the building, but world-traveler pandas are friendly creatures,
so they let us have one good look and a quick picture.

Did you know that Levi's jeans were invented in San Francisco?
This is actually kind of a cool story of successful entrepreneurship
that dates all the way back to the Gold Rush during the mid 1800's.
2 guys got together and came up with a super-tough garment for the minors,
with rivets to hold it together.
Later on, these garments became the Levis' many of us are still wearing today.
(Check out wikipedia if you are interested in the whole story.)
The original Levi's factory burned down during the great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906,
but the one that was rebuilt immediately after, still stands.
If Bamboo comes back to San Francisco, I will take him up there for a visit, if you guys are interested.

Just a couple of blocks from the the Apple store and the Ferrari store
that Bamboo that visited a few days ago, is Union Square, with all its luxury stores
like Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's, Neiman Marcus, Saks 5th Avenue, etc.,
and the posh St. Francis Hotel.
Bamboo wasn't really interested in all that. What Bamboo really wanted to do
is check out the ice-skating rink they built there, just for the holidays.
Bamboo also noticed that they were already erecting the Christmas tree,

Muni has been the public transportation agency in San Francisco since 1912.
This is what Market Street looked like back then (http://blog.streetcar.org/uploads/urr-market.jpg)

Bamboo, like every tourist in SF and many of the locals, was fascinated by the F line,
running from Fisherman's Wharf to Castro, because that's where all the old restored street cars run.

Here, you can see Bamboo getting on an old Italian the tram, on Market Street.
This particular street car was built in 1928, in Milan, and was recently imported from Italy.

The F line features many older trams that have been beautifully restored.
They're really cool to look at inside and out (kind of like classic cars, but bigger ;).

If you come to San Francisco, you'll probably want to ride one.
Bamboo rode several different ones in the last couple of weeks and loved every minute of it.

tomato

Every tourist coming through San Francisco is a little curious about the "gay district."
Not to worry, it is by far one of the safest neighborhoods in the City. I have taken many out-of-towners there.
However, unless there is a neighborhood event or a street fair, there isn't too much to see or photograph.
A few bars, a handful of businesses, and a few rainbow flags scattered around and that's about it.

30378

The neighborhood's old movie theater is kind of interesting, though, and shows all kinds of cool movies.
There is still a guy playing the organ in there, just like they used to, generations ago.
That alone is probably worth the price of admission!

30379

Yes, Bamboo, they really serve drinks when you get you nails done, in there!

30380

We went inside a hobby / craft shop but didn't find anything decent for
Bamboo to wear in there. Oh, well, never hurts to look.

Bamboo has been interested in the Cable Cars since Day 1, when we walked
past the "depot"
Eventually, I had to get him a ticket so he could get a proper ride with all the tourists.
Cable cars are more than 100 years old and locals and tourists alike love them.
Everything you've ever wanted to know about cable cars is here (http://www.sfcablecar.com/) .

tomato
11-29-2009, 11:07 PM
In theory, you can hop on / hop off any San Francisco cable cars.
In reality, they're often so crowded, you have to walk to the beginning of the line to be sure you get on.
In past years, if you only rode a couple of stops, the gripman would let you get away with it and not collect the fare.
Nowadays, the cable car doesn't start until everybody has paid their $5 (each leg ).

Bamboo didn't mind standing in line too much but he was a little worried
and wondered if that 100 year old piece of wood would really be able to make it up the hill.

Not to worry Bamboo, they do it every day. I'll show you how.

It got so crowded in there after a couple of stops, that Bamboo had to go back in the backpack.
We got off at the top of the hill, where the cable car museum is.

tomato
11-29-2009, 11:27 PM
The cable car museum is free, and you can see the whole pulley system
that keeps cable cars from barrelling down the city's hills :eyebulge:

Plus they have these neat old cars. Bamboo was happy to check it out
because nobody noticed he was climbing on stuff,
except one little guy who tried to take him home with him  .
Almost lost Bamboo there.

Bamboo wanted to see the famous row of Victorian houses, located in Alamo Square, called the painted ladies.
We went there the afternoon of Thanksgiving, because it's easier to park in San Francisco during holidays.
It was a beautiful day and I let Bamboo do the driving. He's really good at it, too. :bow:

Actually, I think this may be the neighborhood's homepage (http://www.lovehaight.org/)

Bamboo wanted to see where it all happened, so I took him there, for educational purposes only .

These days there aren't very many hippies left, but you can still see a few odd things here and there...

Every tourist who comes to SF wants to see the Golden Gate Bridge.
Unfortunately for the tourists, the GG Bridge is usually busy playing hide and seek in the fog
at least a third of the time, especially in the summer when the fog is the thickest.
So when Bamboo saw that the bridge was completely clear,
he insisted that we check it out close up and personal even though it was already getting pretty dark.

On one of the pictures, Bamboo is seated on an actual piece of cable.
Tourist kids noticed him, and called out "Panda, panda!"

From the bridge, you can see the San Francisco skyline, when the weather is really clear.

If you go to the GG Bridge, BE SURE TO BRING A JACKET, because it is always VERY WINDY up there.

Check out wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gate_Bridge) if you're interested in details about the GG bridge.

I wouldn't worry about that. Everybody is going to come up with their own cool stuff.

One of my favorite Bambo shot was when ETimaGo gave him some soup because he'd been in the mail for a week (I'd never seen soup like that b/f), and another one is when someone put Bambo on a hydraulic jack so he could help her work on the car. There were other shots of Bambo sharing forum members' every day life that were really endearing (even jclo's shot of bambo passing out drunk ;).

I don't have any nice mods on my cars to show you and Bamboo, so I thought I'd just show you what I know best instead.

San Francisco is not that big, and a tourist can cover most of these sights in 2 or 3 days, if.

Lucky for Bamboo, he is really small, so he could go with me wherever I went (he really did travel in the backpack a lot), and we just stopped to take pictures on the way (which means that a lot of people saw me walk around holding a stuffed animal  oh well! ).

On my days off, I took him to the beach, to the GG Bridge, and to Marin County (that's next), plus there is a surprise post but I'm keeping that one for later, when the thread is slow (and when I have time to process the pics ;). You guys should really like that one, so stay tuned.

For now, I have a couple more SF posts to show you and that's pretty much the end of it. Whatever is left over will have to go on an online album of some sort.

Bamboo didn't get a good look at the City skyline from the GG Bridge the other day,
because it was pretty dark already. He did see the city lights come up one by one,
from the top of the bridge, but wanted a clearer, better picture.
So, on Saturday, we decided to drive out to Marin Headlands,
right on the other side of the GG Bridge, in Marin County.
It was a beautiful day, a little windy but completely clear, no fog,
so we took a bunch of pics there.
If you think Bamboo looks a little funny, on that pole,
that's because Bamboo was scared of being blown away,
even though I tied him properly to my messenger bag.
A few tourists were observing the scene and some photographed Tomato photographing Bamboo,
so you never know, there maybe a pic of the 2 of us on the net after all.
After Windy Marin Headlands, we drove down to Horse Shoe Bay (I believe)
where Bamboo sat for a while, and admired the city skyline.
Bamboo had a wonderful time, especially since I let him drive
But it was also the day before Bamboo meets the mailman, so it was a little nostalgic.

Not to worry, though, Bamboo is long gone already  and he should be at the next guys' early next week (that's in the next couple of days from this post at the latest)

So.. Bamboo was a little groggy after the trip from coast to coast.. He crawled out of the box but was full of ambition to get his hoodie customized
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e208/3mrhythm/IMG_5958copy.jpg

He rushed down stairs and decided to sit and stare at the printing press in anticipation of his sweet custom threads.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e208/3mrhythm/IMG_5962copy.jpg

Couple hours of watching me prep the screens and a few min of setup and printing he was stoked to finally get to see his new outerwear!
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e208/3mrhythm/IMG_5963copy.jpg

For some reason Bamboo started rapping 8mile. I think it was a joke.. he already knows that this is a metal house.. but i can see where he kinda looks like eminem in that hoodie.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e208/3mrhythm/IMG_5965copy.jpg

being that its 3am we're all hitting the sack. tomorrow maybe he'll go for a walk with us and take some more pics. Hopefully the bald Eagle we saw today will be around... but we'll keep bamboo safe :)

Speaking of hoodie and 8 Miles, I've kept the best of the pics (?) for last, so be sure to go back and check out the Mission set (should be up in a couple of days). I'll let you guys know.

Yeah, I think he's going to the guy in Chicago. Look at the list on the first post, then skip you and back down the list.

Darb
12-08-2009, 03:49 PM
Yea, if it helps I can reorder the list on the first page, but the order (due to hoodie logo screening) is TinyGiant -> staypuft -> engelm_

Though, at second glace, engelm_ (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/member.php?u=5964) hasn't been active since September. We might want to consider a limit on inactivity (not to be confused with post count) prior to attempting to contact a person on the list so that we don't lose another panda.

tomato
12-08-2009, 05:00 PM
  Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! don't lose another Panda!!!

Darb, we should probably have some kind of rule that says it the member doesn't respond to 3 PM's within, let say one week to 10 days (?) we move on to the next guy, and then give him another chance later on (we skip him then go back to him and if that doesn't work, we drop his name to the end of the list after he's had his second chance? Something like that? What do you guys think?

#4) Getting ready to canoe back to the car.

How is the weather in Manhattan? Bet the Hudson river is frozen over again.
Haven't seen NYC in ages, since before 9/11.

Its nice and brisk out here

Bamboo has landed! Eagerly arriving from his flight, Bamboo was unfortunately 'randomly' chosen for security check due to heighten security measures for terrorism in NY. Needless to say, Bamboo was quite upset and wanted to go straight home. Onward to the Big City tomorrow, first stop, the Bronx

Yea, a lot of the people after you haven't been on since Nov or Dec. Silver_echo and JBougie were on earlier this month, though.

well i am here, but i am gonna reintroduce my idea for transport arrangements...

hey i have another suggestion idea to make things even easier for transport arrangements... i would suggest to look up who has the little guy before you, then just go ahead and PM the person who has him before you... i would just PM JBougie and i would receive a PM from Darb, then planning for approximate cost will be easier with more time... this is brought up because right at the moment, unless i have time to plan for the cost, arranging the money for shipping will try very hard to break my budget... just a thought... i wanted to suggest this before i started to try to put it into practice...

well it hard if the next person doesnt check their pm's. how much more if they dont really log on and check this thread? i pm darb and the next person after me and gave them time to respond.

silver_echo

okay i understand that, but my idea would pass the future people info on earlier... that way there would be no delay while waiting to figure out where the little guy goes next...

Darb

Will do!

How long should his stay be?

A couple weeks, plan to ship him out around the 1st of February. Until then, have fun!

Bamboo always stops to have his picture taken when he sees a colorful car, but ultimately he prefers riding in the Yaris.

Funny, I didn't know the owner of the minicooper was right behind me when I was taking this picture, but he didn't say anything and actually smiled at Bamboo.

(these are just filler pictures, btw. I've been too busy to finish the SF series, but I will)

So what's happening with Jinxor, isn't Bamboo going to Australia anymore?
You know, you guys can take him out of his box and wrap him in something like a couple of Tyvec envelopes (like a FedEx envelope) if he's gonna have to travel via Air Mail. The box is probably heavy.

I'm here, I'm here. Enth should be sending Bamboo to JBougie next, I don't think Enth has heard from Jinx, I know I haven't. So, Enth or jbougie, keep us posted on Bamboo's location.

Also:

:needpics:

PS: I've added YW to my "comics" bookmark folder, so I should be checking in more often. I have so many bookmarks that I've had to set up folders for my bookmarks and that (as well as school) is the reason I haven't been around too frequently. I just forget to come by.

We'll see if this small modification will help things. I'm pretty good at checking my comics, so if YW opens with all of those, I'll be more apt to check in. Behavior modification ftw.

By the way, that reminds me. A panda in a Tyvec envelope only cost $2 or $3 bucks to ship domestically so if you want to do away with the box, that's fine, just make sure you use something that will protect the panda from humidity and from tear. Tyvec (like a fedex soft envelope) is great. Stick a delivery confirmation on it just so you know when the next guy gets it.

:iono:

I sure hope we haven't lost another panda because it took a lot of time to find the hoodie, and it took a lot of time for TG to do the logo.
