Defrosting Windows

This may be "old news" to most folks around here, but there is a TREMENDOUS increase in the effectiveness of the defroster when the fresh air selector knob is set for vent rather than for recirculation.

I guess that should be expected, since you will be bringing in dryer air from outside when in "vent" mode, instead of recirculating the air inside the cabin, which is being constantly humidified by your breathing.

I guess the Yaris is a lot more air tight than any other car I have ever owned, because I am sixty years old and have been driving since I was sixteen, but I don't remember ever having to use the vent mode for good defrosting with any of the other cars that I have owned.

Actually, I had never paid any attention to the "fine print" on the knob. I knew that the last two or three positions to the right (clockwise) were for defrost, but I had not noticed that there were instructions to use the vent mode. Like I said, I have never had to do that with any of my previous cars.

When you use the defrost you are actually pulling air throught the a/c evaporator, as it will dry the air when it circulates through the system. If you cycle it through via inside air as opposed to the fresh air selector, if I remeber correctly from climate control classes, it won't cycle through the evaporator.

Well, for whatever reason, it sure makes a world of difference to be in the vent mode.

I actually dont think Ive ever used the recirc other than for AC

I've never even used the defroster. I live in a drier area so I just crack a side window and let sublimation do all the work. :smile:

Yeah I always leave the passanger side window just open a tiny bit. First defrost and then open window slightly and keeps it from refogging. I have noticed my windows fog up lot easier than other cars ive driven. Could be like you said the smaller volume of air space inside since it is a subcompact.

I think it's the lack of wind leaks

I have owned all kinds of cars and pickup trucks (talk about a small cabin area), and I have never paid any attention to whether or not the controller was set for vent or recirc.

Agreed..

It hasn't been mentioned yet, so I'll point it out.. The recirculate will heat up your car much faster.

Instead of constantly bringing in and heating up freezing cold air from the outside, it will just keep heating up the air inside the vehicle..

When nobody is in the car and you're trying to warm it up as quickly as possible, recirculate is the way to do it! Works great!
