View Full Version : How to get cruise control

I went to the dealership yesterday and was talking to a sales rep and one of the things I was looking for in a new Yaris would be cruise control. He told me I just need the power or sport package. However, my last Yaris had the power package, and it didn't have cruise control. So how do I for sure get it?

Do it yourself. It will be far cheaper than paying for it from the dealer, and with an 09 or 10, all you need is the OEM stalk and cable.

Just for shits and giggles, I asked my local dealer how much it would be to have cruise installed. Their response: "It's not worth it. There are numerous parts that need to be installed. Your cost would be like $1000-$2000."

Of course this was after I had read the threads about cruise control install, for which you just need the stalk, and if I remember right, the price was less than $20...

The problem is that if you don't get one with Cruise from the factory, they port or dealer install the $300 Rostra aftermarket CC, which requires a bit of (unnecessary) labor to install.

My problem with that is in my '08 it didn't have the cruise control light in the cluster that I saw in the DIY, and I was under the impression that if it's not there, then it cannot be added. Am I mistaken?

Unless this has changed (since the Sport Package is a new thing), the Power Package is a necessity to also have cruise control, but having the Power Package does not automatically mean you will get cruise control. So if you want it that way from the dealer, you'll need to specify that cars you want to see have cruise control... in which case, they will also all have Power (and presumably, Sport) Package.

Starting in 09, they all have the two indicators on the cluster.

The power package Yaris comes with a different gauge cluster than what comes on the non-power Yaris. The power version has a light that says "cruise" when the cruise is activated. The non-power can come with a cruise but it will not be Toyota's parts. It will be the Rostra, which has the light built into the stalk. You can add the Rostra kit after buying the car.

1. The Sports package is not new.
2. You do not have to have the power package to get cruise. My 07 does not have the power package but it already had cruise installed by the port.

I was under the impression that the "Sport Package" was not available as a package per se until the 2010 model year... before that, there was the "S" version of the cars available, and there is no "S" anymore.

Regarding your second point, I was referring to the original, factory-installed cruise control... the difference that I think you pointed out here:

"The non-power can come with a cruise but it will not be Toyota's parts. It will be the Rostra, which has the light built into the stalk. You can add the Rostra kit after buying the car."

The "S" and the "RS" is the same thing, Toyota just changed the name to try to attract more buyers. "S" stands for sport and "RS" stands for Rally Sport.

If you already have the power package on a 2010 you can add OEM cruise or the Toyota's approved secondary version, the Rostra. If you dont have the power package and you have an 07 or 08, you would have to buy a whole new gauge cluster if you wanted true OEM. Although, Toyota has been installing the Rostra kit on it's non-power products for at least 10 years. My parents have a 2001 Toyota Tacoma with the same exact Rostra cruise that is in my 07 Yaris and the same that is in my co-workers 2010 Tundra.

So it all depends on how much $ you want to spend.

For 2007 and 2008, factory cruise was only available on the Sedan.

For 2009, the "new car features" section of the service manual lists cruise control as now being an option for the liftback and shows the instrument cluster placing of the indicators. For 07 and 08 the cruise control sections of the service manual were specific to the sedan.

So, for 2009 and 2010 all liftbacks have the indicator on the cluster, regardless of which packages they have.

Okay, so I just need the stalk and wires for the '10? Would I run into any problems if I got one for < '08?

Same stalk and wire will work for any year (and for many other Toyotas as well).

'08 would work, you would not have an indicator light but CScott made a module for it. ;)

And how does it work man vs auto? And where can I get a stalk? Been looking for a couple of days and can only find "kits" for $250. Eph that.

EDIT:

I lied, started finding them on ebay motors, but very few. None for Yaris. Any idea what models would be interchangeable? I assume most, if not all, Toyota stalks would be, just to save manufacturing costs, but you never know.

EDIT 2:

Would this work:

With Auto you only need the stalk and wire. With MT you also need the Cruise Control Clutch Switch (88280-14030).

The stalk is about $80 from the dealer, the wire is about $30 and the clutch switch is about $20. The stalk and wire can often be found on ebay or junkyards for considerably less:

Ha, awesome. If this info is all in the DIY thread feel free to redirect me rather than going the same info again, it is just so long and it's been a while since I read it.

As for the clutch switch, possibly this?:

still trying to find the wire...

That's correct for the clutch switch. For the wire, that ebay listing shows it connected to the stalk. I would check with the vendor to see if it's included.

I feel like an asshole. All my answers were all in previous threads. :( I think the problem is that it's not all in one single place, as others have asked the same questions as I did.

My 2005 Taco had the same cruise as the 2010 Yaris so you could probably go to a junk yard and get one off of any Toyota you find.

Some of us are DIY idiots - I can hardly change a lightbulb but would be interested in the non-dealer route -

So I could buy the parts online - then pay a mechanic to install?

How much ballpark should this cost?

ive been driving my 2010 Manual hatchback without the clutch switch. Its a little bit of a pain the first few times you accidentally hit the clutch and the rpms shoot through the roof, but after you remember that you just have to hit the brake to disable cruise first then it works fine.

So you dont really NEED to have the clutch switch. I jumped mine out with a spade connector i found. Fit perfect like it was made for it.

P.S. thanks again scott for your help.

Yes, but not for your car. European Yaris ECMs don't have the cruise control function built in, so to add cruise to yours, you would need an aftermarket kit.

I'm really stoked about buying my first yaris this weekend, hopefully. Literally pulling my hair out trying to find a LB 5 speed with cruise, don't have much hair to spare. I'm in South Jersey and the dealer found a few of them but the closest is literally 400+ miles away.

I need to make sure I fully understand before my purchase because after reading this, I'll forget trying to get one with cruise and do it myself.
I commute nearly 100 mi. round trip everyday to work and can't do it any longer without cruise on my 2002 Neon. Can't wait!

All I need is a 2010 Yaris 5 speed with the PQ power package, which I planned on buying anyway, then purchase a factory cruise stalk for about $80, a Clutch switch for about $30 and a couple of hours work with a careful install and viola, I have Toyota Factory Cruise Control on my 5 speed with all factory bells and switches, no pun intended?

Any documentation or how to install / mount and wire the clutch switch & stalk?
