I bought my 2010 Hatchback AT Yaris back in December. Since buying it, I've put over 2k miles on it, doing city driving for most of the week, and putting a decent amount of highway miles on it during the weekend (the ratio is probably 60 city to 40 hw in all).
But I've recently started running into problems with my new vehicle.
Every now and then, when I go to start the car, I will need to turn the ignition key for greater than 5 seconds to get the engine to turn over. Sometimes it won't turn over or it will begin to and then just sputter out. That's happened to me 4 times now.
Also, I've been getting terrible mileage. I'm averaging about 28mpg, even though I've always driven on the more "conservative" side, with a moderate acceleration, not stressing the engine too much, and coasting before coming up to a stop light.
Granted, it's been all winter miles, and I don't live too far from my work (3.5 miles) so it's not like my engine gets an opportunity to warm up on cold mornings. I mean, I'll start it up a couple of minutes before I leave so it's a little warm, but I don't let it idle for 5 minutes in my driveway so the cabin is warm either. But that's not to say that my only driving is back and forth to work. I also drive it regularly to go shopping and go visit friends that are much further than that. So I should be seeing something a little bit closer to the EPA City estimate I'd think. Hell, my old Pontiac used to get EPA City driving to the same spots.
And I'm having trouble with the acceleration. It seems like I have to press the pedal down a little bit for it to do anything, and when I finally get a response it's a sudden burst of acceleration. The only way I can prevent that is to slowly press the pedal down, but that shouldn't be necessary since the other car I test drove didn't seem to have that problem...
Are these serious issues that I should contact my dealer about, or am I just being paranoid?
Oh and other than those issues, I absolutely love my Yaris. It's waaaay better than the old '87 Pontiac I used to drive.
