View Full Version : The battle of the Droids??!

OK, guys, I'm really torn between these 2 droids :help::help: :thanks:
1) Nexus One
2) Droid
If you had to choose between the 2 which one would you get?
(the Droid's slider keyboard is a huge advantage to me, but the kb itself is not the greatest and the N1 is faster [snapdragon 1g processor] and looks brighter in direct sunlight [amoled display]). I'm confused. :bonk::bonk:
I gotta try to figure out the total cost to own between the 2, exactly, but it looks like the N1 would cost me less in the long run but not by a whole lot.
Any input would be greatly appreciated here, thanks!

if she had wanted iPhone input she would have asked for it. Please, lets not clutter this.
I honestly think it comes down to manufacturers. do you want HTC or do you want Motorola. honestly I'd go with HTC.

I have a Droid (well technically a Milestone, the international GSM version) and it's awesome... Sure, it's slower (can't say it's really noticeable, but then you can overclock it)
A friend of mine for an N1, I played around with it, it is rather nice but just feels kinda flimsy, the Motorola could do well in a pinch as a bludgeoning tool
Also, although the N1's screen is technically superior (AMOLED is rather nice), and with the same resolution, it just does not look as sharp, like the pixels are not square, almost fuzzy... I just looooove the Motorola's screen, as sharp as a Hattori Hanso sword
Design-wise, the N1 does look like a pretty generic HTC handset, the Droid/Milestone has a rather unique design... The slide-out keyboard, I do not often use it unless I am typing a long email, one way or another no phone can touch the Blackberries when it comes to keyboards :D
And, with the Android 2.1 update, you get a lot of the N1's eyecandy now... Tomato, go search the market for "live wallpaper", there's a whole bunch of cool free ones :)
OK, I think I've went on long enough :D

I love my Motorola Droid. I bought it before the Nexus 1 came out. If I were buying a phone now, I'd take a strong look at the N1 for one particular reason - I don't use the slide out keyboard on the Droid because the virtual one is way faster and easier to use. So the Nexus has the advantage of being slimmer. Other than that, they match up pretty closely. Also depends if you like the chiselled look and feel of the Droid or the soft rounded N1. I also don't think the N1's processor isn't that big of a difference.

Just to get it out of the way, the iPhone is not an option for me at the moment
(I know it's a cool phone, I've played with it, too, just not an option, enough said )
I also know that Blackberry is rumored to be working on a "T" model (model T ?) with a slider KB and a bigger screen.
http://www.phonedog.com/2010/03/03/pictures-of-blackberry-slider-device-emerge/
I know the minute I see it, I'm gonna kick myself for not waiting [I just loved the way the BB Bold 9700 handled mail and messages, the simplicity of the interface, the battery lasting for days  :drool:], but I've made up my mind to not wait any longer than May / June at the latest.
There are other phones I'm interested in are: HTC Incredible, and HTC Evo but right now, nobody's seen them in person since they're due to release in a month or so, and we don't know how much they're gonna cost, what plans come with them, on what carriers etc. so that's why I've pretty much narrowed it between the 2 current Android top dogs : Nexus 1 and Droid.
Right now, Nexus 1 runs on TMobile (AT&T is not an option for me), which makes it a little more accessible for me (cheaper to own) but the network is a little spotty in some areas; and the Droid runs on Verizon, which has a rock-solid network in San Francisco although they do charge a little more for it.

Although on the other end of the spectrum, keeping on the bleeding edge is a very expensive process...

^ that's true. That's why I gave myself a deadline and narrowed it down to the Android topdogs above. But another 2 weeks isn't gonna make a big difference ;)
To complicate things further, the 2 phones (OK, 3 or 4 phones ;) I'm looking at, are not on the same network at the moment.
So , for example, the N1 would cost me approx. $20 less a month, maybe a bit more, than the Droid. Doesn't look like much each month, but over 2 years, it's $480. :iono:
The Droid on Verizon is rock solid though. *sigh* If the phone is slower, I can't tell because the network is so fast !

I know what you mean, I've noticed the same thing. The droid's physical kb is really nice to have but it's not the greatest. I get frustrated with it and just for that reason, I've started using the virtual KB much more (in landscape).
I think the Droid looks just fine, got no problem with the angular look, can even handle the extra weight. Not a fan of the display in the sun light, though.
this is driving me crazy. Maybe I ought to flip a coin

What would make my life a lot easier is to be able to go see the N1 in person someplace and be able to play with it a little longer than 20 seconds (not that I'm not grateful to the total strangers who've let me play with their phones 20 seconds ;)
The reviews will only tell you so much. Ultimately, you have to have the device in your hands and begin using it to notice everything they're not telling you. That's why I ask you peeps for feedback

Doesn't help that right now is when they're releasing all the new-and-improved devices.
They seem to do that about twice a year, around mother's day/ father's day, and in October/November.
Nothing wrong with taking your time to get something you're *really* happy with, so you don't have to go back and upgrade constantly. :iono:

Seriously, the only advantage to iPhone is more apps and a slicker UI. And the huge app count is largely made up of duplicate app ideas.
Droid/Nexus excel in many more important areas.
- bigger, sharper screen
- bigger, louder, clearer speaker
- better camera with flash (doubles as flashlight)
- open source
- universal hardware
- Google map navigation (the best GPS software)
- Google's accurate speech to text
- removable battery
- expandable memory
- better network
To name a few....

Very true, because of how open the Android market is it's flooded with crap apps.
Although I have high hopes now that Apple has made a requirement on their app store that apps must be originally written in Objective-C, C, C++. I hope that new ridiculous restriction will push more developers to Android and WebOS.

I forgot about the HTC Desire, which, to be honest, appeals to me more than the N1 because it has an optical trackpad instead of a trackball, android 2.1 and HTC Sense UI on top of it (out of the box), adds flash support, same specs, physical buttons at the bottom. You're right, VZW is rock solid in SF.
I have a feeling the Sprint network is catching up (in coverage, not necessarily customer service ;) but that could be changing :iono:
There is a coverage by carrier map (in Beta) at CNET if you want to check coverage of the 4 carriers in your area:
http://reviews.cnet.com/cell-phone-coverage-map/
as if it wasn't difficult already to pick a phone, you've also got to pick the best network, the best plan ... pffffff

Well, that could be changing. The EVO is coming. Rumor has it, EVO is supposed to be the BEAST compared to the other phones on the market (kind of like your Yaris compared to our Yarii ) The BlackBerry T is supposed to be heading there as well. They still have the Hero and the Samsung Moment which are pretty good phones.

I voted for HTC Evo/Incredible....the 8 mp attracts me, but VZW plans won't :(
Sprint charges an arm and a leg to buy the phone, but cheaper monthly plans than AT&T and VZW....
I am in the market for a phone, but more along the lines of a Motorola Droid type phone. I'd like a 8 megapixel camera w/ that kind of styling...I have a flip phone w/ 5.1 mp...can't downgrade to photo quality and i hate carrying digi cameras...pockets look FAT.

That's just a few, I'm rocking a Palm Pre right now, which I really like. (Build quality aside)
Sprint has worked very well for me. I travel a decent amount and haven't had any issues. With the exception of visiting relatives in the boonies in upstate NY near the Canadian border.
Customer Care was a different story although Sprint's customer care today is 100x better than what it used to be. No more 50 minute hold times, reps hanging up on you, etc.
tomato
04-11-2010, 03:18 PM
I got the same impression with Sprint customer care when I tried to get the Hero 2 months ago. It's kind of a long story, but they pretty much refused to give me the plan I had found online at their own website on a technicality (I wanted a business plan and they said self-employment didn't qualify for a business plan, they said I had to be an employee of a corporation. Uh? That's weird, because the IRS and other entities have no problem with that, "dba's / sole proprietorships and small businesses " are businesses too, last I checked :iono:) so anyway after arguing with them a while, then I decided not to get the phone at the moment.
The Sprint business plans are a little different, more flexible (or were, at the time) you could start w/ a 200 minutes voice plan if you wanted whereas the consumer plans start with a 450 minute voice plan, mandatory). I only use an 60 minutes voice per month on average, and that's when I try real hard to use my phone.
I've learned my lesson, though, next time, I won't even bother going into the store, except for trying out the phones. I'll just do everything online and hope for the best :iono:
That's part of the appeal of the N1 for me. You get the phone on your own, then you shop for the best possible plan you can get and NO CONTRACT. I think when the N1 comes to Verizon and Sprint, that will force more flexibility w/ the plans. That's also part of the reason I'm still waiting even though I started this process 2 months ago already. I don't want to be stuck with a 2 y contract with any given company, if I can find a better rate and no contract, and everybody knew that the N1 was coming to the other carriers in the Spring.
sorry for the long winded post. I just never had any luck with Sprint :frown:

Kioshi, be sure the quality of the photo is good. The number of MP alone doesn't necessarily equate to good quality photos, and there are other things like shutter speed, on board editing functions, etc.
Still, I can't wait to see the initial reviews for this phone. Hope it won't be too much longer now.

Right, what I meant is they only consider businesses with tax ID #s as businesses eligible for those plans.

At some point, I gotta narrow it down, though.
I'm not considering any phones attached to AT&T because the coverage is ***terrible*** in SF
that leaves Sprint, VZW, and T-Mobile. In my experience out here in the Bay Area,
- Sprint has good coverage in the Bay Area but still so-so customer service (although they're rumored to be working on it?) pretty good plans, especially if you talk on your phone a lot (I had Sprint for a few years)
- VZW has a rock-solid network, equally solid / extremely professional customer service, but the most expensive plans.
- T-Mo has so-so coverage, but *excellent* and I mean *excellent* customer sce. For each person who drops the ball in some way, there is 1000 others right behind them trying to make it right for you. And their plans are the best, most flexible (especially since they got the N1, they've come up with additional plans)
(this is just my opinion based on where I live).

The more i see Sprint commercials showing their $69.99 everything plan, the more i lean towards them when they come out with the hTC Evo or...HTC Pro 2.
A few of my coworkers have Sprint and have constant signals...on the other hand, AT&T gets a lot of dropped calls...dropped calls is soooo 4 years ago :)

+ 1 on AT&T's dropped calls. I see it all the time. AT&T s...cks @ss in SF.
Sprint's network actually looks really good for us here locally according to Root Wireless's map.
If you go to Sprint, they'll give you freebies like NFL live, and Nascar with their unlimited data plan.
It's a good package. As long as you get a good phone and don't have to deal with them too much, it's probably the best bang for the bucks.
I get a really good deal with TMo but only because I have an old plan. They don't offer these plans anymore, so that's kind of an incentive for me to keep the account active. But their network is a bit spotty, although not where you live Kioshi (at least the 2 or 3 Google employees I saw in the commute with the N1 on Tmo told me they had no connectivity issues down in the South Bay)
I guess I"m just gonna have to wait and see what shakes down in the next couple of weeks! :iono:

10% is that on the phone, or on the plan? I didn't know that. Can you link?
I don't have a link from Sprint.com specifically, but here's one from a 3rd party dealer linky (http://www.pcsorders.com/cu/index.php?p=works).
There's also an employee referral site at sprint.com/sero which has plans that start out at $59.99 for 500 minutes (for landlines since they have free mobile to mobile for ANY carrier) and everything else unlimited. So really it's $10 less than the comparable plan and you get 50 additional minutes. idk if they let you stack the credit union discount on top of that, but it's still a pretty good deal regardless. (Though it does require an employee email address and ID number to place an order, you can probably find one on google to use or PM me and I'll give you mine. )

I say go with the HTC EVO, this phone has all the bells and whistles. 3G/4G, WiFi, HTC Sense, 2.1 Android, 4.3 inch screen, Front 1.3 MP camera/Rear 8MP camera, HD recording, 1Ghz CPU, 1GIG ram, ahh the list goes on.

the front 1.3 MP camera will most likely be taken out for the US market simply because we (Americans) dont care for video conference calling/video calling in general. I do, I've always wanted a camera for video calling, but most were taken out for US phones.ie: Samsung Omnia (europe, Asia, Africa, etc all had front camera, but for US it was removed/taken out)....
My one question is to tomato and myself, do any of these phones have multi-language support? I had the Omnia smartphone and there were programs you could install for multi-language support but it never really functioned properly...
iPhone is the only phone w/ multi-language support (that i know of). I get emails from friends in Japanese and i hate having to be at home to check on the computer everytime...

Kioshi, I know what you mean. That's one thing that the iPhone does support, but I haven't found out yet if Android can support.
Auto correct drives me crazy because it doesn't take into account multiple languages - as far as I can tell it's an either/or situation, you set up your phone for US English and go from there, but there may be a way around that, IDK. I'll try to find out in the next couple of days.
BTW, I think the front camera will stay because people might want to skype. VZW already has a deal with Skype and has installed Skype mobile on a couple of their devices. I've tried it, it's OK, feels a little bit like the early day of Internet Telephony when we could communicate in simplex only (one at a time, like walkie talkie) but in a pinch ... plus skype to skype is free and doesn't use up voice minutes.
PS. The EVO is going to Sprint, not VZW but if the camera stays, who knows ...

yes, please dig up info about multi-language support. It's pretty much the only thing that bothers me regarding data plans on smartphones. And i hate auto correct too! I would have to change the settings everytime i sent out a new text... :(
P.S. - I did not know Skype and VZW are working together.
As Garm has said, I'll wait till you make a decision, then follow your trail hehe.

Hahahaha, OK ;)
Gotta warn you though, in my purchase decisions - especially when it comes to electronic stuff - I usually go for the best "bang for the bucks" rather than the one that has the most bells and whistles, because with electronic stuff, no matter what you get, your purchase is already obsolete right out of the box, so what's the point of overpaying for it?! :iono:
I haven't completely said no to the Droid yet, even though the specs aren't as impressive as the newer phones, only because it's the only top dog Android phone with a slider KB right now and even though the KB sucks, it's still nice to have (especially when you want to override auto correct in a hurry).
I'll let you know what I find out. If I don't see you at the meet on Friday (I'm still a maybe, sorry), I'll definitely post up in this thread.

P.S. - I did not know Skype and VZW are working together.
Yeah, they are. I tried it last WE, spoke to my brother in Europe skype to skype, worked OK. a lot of static on the line, but definitely can't beat the price ;)
My understanding is that:
If you call Skype to Skype (using Skype mobile on VZW), there is no charge
If you call Skype to landline or any other line, then VZW use your voice plan minutes and Skype charges a little something, too.

Not to add to the confusion or anything but the myTouch slider is coming out in a couple of weeks on T Mobile USA
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/04/mytouch-images-in-the-wild-part-two/
It looks like a a G1 + MyTouch replacement. Specs are not as strong as the top dog Android phones coming soon on Sprint and VZW, but still looks very interesting for those of you who are partial to the slider kb. Comes with Sense UI and Android 2.1 out of the box.

Nope, the Evo is made specifically for Sprint at this point and the front camera will be on the retail version. This isn't a case of a Euro or Japanese phone being brought to the US via another version, what you see is what you're going to get.

Verizon Droid Incredible - ETA (Rumor May), 3.7" Screen, Cost $199 (rumor), Cost n/a, 1Ghz CPU, 8mp Dual Flash Camera, No HDMI Output, No Front Facing Camera
T-Mobile HTC Incredible - ETA N/A, Cost $199 (rumor), 3.7" Screen, This might not ever come out for T-Mo but is a rumor right now. 3.7" Screen, 1 GHz CPU, 8mp Dual Flash Camera, No HDMI Output, No Front Facing Camera, (On T-Mobile this should support 4G with only a software upgrade. Same goes with all T-Mobile Android phones.)
AT&T Dell Swipe / Mini 5 - ETA N/A, Cost N/A (I would guess $299 or more), 5" Screen, 1 GHz CPU, Everyone knows AT&T sucks (Price, Coverage, Reliability) but this phone has a 5" screen and HDMI outputs! But you don't get a forward facing camera.
Sprint HTC EVO - ETA June, Cost ($199 Rumor) 4.3" Screen, This would be my top pick. It beats the others except the Dell by having a 4.3" screen, a 1 GHz CPU, and 4G! The EVO also includes a forward facing 1.3mp camera, 8mp Dual Flash Camera, and HDMI outs.
I'll take the EVO over any of the other options! With it’s second biggest screen, 1 GHz CPU, front camera, HDMI output, 4G data connection and $200 price tag, it’s a clear winner in my eyes. I'm guessing that the Dell will be more expensive but you do have to wait a couple of months for the EVO. The other 2 options you can get a bit sooner but are lacking too many features that the other phones will have for the same price or cheaper. I also feel like a 3.7" screen is too small which is why I lean towards the Dell (5”) or EVO (4.3”) screen.
Now the only other real deciding factor is the monthly price. T-Mobile and Sprint come out the winners when you look at total cost, minutes per month, and the fact they don’t have data caps. When I compared my share of a 3 person 1200min T-Mobile family plan it comes to about $65. The only company that comes close to this on a solo plan would be Sprint at $69.99. For that cost you get 450 minutes, unlimited minutes to mobile numbers, unlimited data and MMS. To me this seems like the best deal especially when compared to having to go with a $99.99 plan to get the Nexus One through Google/T-Mobile. The way it worked out for me to get the Nexus One I would have to pay $280 and then sign a 2 year contract that is going to cost me $35 per month for the EXACT some coverage, just a better phone.
$1120 is too much to pay for a Nexus One over 2 years!
I’m not sure about you guys but the choice is pretty simple to me. Deal with my slow G1 for just a bit longer and get the best of the best for a GREAT price. The EVO will beat out the competition for some time to come, $200 is a steal, and Sprint is giving you good deal.
Hope this helps you all out on making a decision on a great phone that you will enjoy for a good time to come. I personally love the Android OS and want everyone who gets one to have the best experience possible.

Give me a couple of days and I will post up my own little cost-analysis as well. Mine is a little different because I base it on the plans I have access to, rather than standard plans. I agree with you, 4.3 is an ideal screen size, but there is the overall package to consider, and total cost to own is important because keep in mind that all these devices, however exciting they seem to be now, are gonna be obsolete in 6 months, so there is no need to overpay.

So the Incredible only comes with 8GB of memory?
The Moto Droid comes with 16GB standard.
Looking at the specs sheet, the only thing the Incredible has over Droid is the Snapdragon processor and a slightly better camera. Everything else is virtually the same - screen size, ect... It also doesn't have a physical KB (which I don't use anyway). My guess though is that the Incredible will cost more.
tomato

@ Kal El: Same cost as the Droid. $199 with a $100 rebate on VZW and 2 Y K.
The Incredible comes with Sense UI (different interface, more home screens instead of the standard 3). You're right, they're not that far apart in specs and nobody said the DROID isn't good. I see that it's not getting much love in the polls, but that doesn't make the Droid a bad phone by any means.
I noticed that the camera on the DROID makes grainy photos though (look at the photo of the iPad I took a couple of weeks ago, that was taken with a Droid), and there is some shutter lag which you probably don't get as much with a faster processor?
I'm waiting for the beta testers to render their verdict ...

no problem
are you wanting to be able to type in multiple languages?
if so then right now no phone has that capability built in (except overseas docomo etc.)
but there are numerous apps like 'google translate' that can take text and give you translations back and forth from over 30 languages (at least 30) and in most cases even text to speech. a lot of the apps also handle speech to text input....

Still think the droid is better. Just because of a keyboard, I'm not so much of a touch screen keyboard person so i use the keyboard more often. Yea its flat buttons and hard to press the correct button you want but with any phone you get used to what it offers and eventually become good at it. Plus the keyboard makes it easier to play NES, SNES, and GBA games such as final fantasy series, earthbound, street fighter, etc etc.
And now the droids just had their update about 1-2 weeks ago to 2.1 so there is multitouch and pinch to zoom and all that now.

@ Kal El: Same cost as the Droid. $199 with a $100 rebate on VZW and 2 Y K.....
not true if you shop aruond a "verizon retailer" NOT A VERIZON STORE. you can get cheaper prices, and I'm not talking about best buy, I got 2 droid phones for $150 after 100$ mail in rebates for EACH phone. So i paid 350$ up front and got 200$ in the mail 2 weeks later which covered my bill for the month. First they gave me the Devour which simply sucked horribly ,wasn't very good at all in my opinion, its simply for a person who doesn't know how to work the android system and wants a dumbed down version, so i just went back 4 hours later and told them to exhange it for the droid and they did, not fee, not restocking fee, no price adjustment, just took teh phones erased the data and handed me 2 boxes with droids in them and I was happy ever since then.
Then couple weeks later the 2.1 update came out and the droid was way better than ever, the only thing i can complain about is the camera. even though it is 5mp, it is quite shitty quality but i barely even use the phone as a camera, mostly for games and such. And they have these new "aftermarket" batteries out for the droid you can buy that last longer than the battery that comes with the droid.

^ good to know about the batteries.
I totally agree with you about the camera. The pics, although 5 MP (more MP than the BB Bold) are grainy, not very good. BB Bold 9700 took better pics, at 3MP.
I'm noticing ever since 2.1 came out, the battery life seems better, and the Droid runs smoother, or is it my imagination?
That KB sucks though, not a fan.

I haven't given up on the Droid, or the N1, even though new phones are coming out. They're both really cool phones IMO.
The MyTouch with a slider QWERTY KB - although not as powerful - is also very attractive to me because it would allow me to keep my plan and it seems like it's got pretty decent specs, Android 2.1, Sense... 512 ram I don't know, it looks like a nice phone if the price is right and the battery stays up longer than 1/2 day

i was at the NY international car show and my friend has 3 mp camera on his crappy flip phone and his looked 10x better than my droid pictures lol thats how bad it is hopefully an update fixes teh focus on the droids camera.
And yea the battery seems longer and I'm always on it, using it for gps, trapster for police, playing super nintendo, searching the internet lol everything. I can go through the whole day and when i get home after a long day from work and such i have still about 1/4 battery left to spare
anyways when i got the droid it was a big jump and upgrade for me. my first phone was a nextel chirp big bulky flip phone. then i switched to verizon and got a crapy flipphone again but it was now with colors instead of the black and white display i had with nextel. then after that i got an upgrade for a lg dare which introduced me into the touch screen world. then i got the blackberry curve more into apps and then droid came out and i was on a mission to get it haha.

Resistance is futile, you will be assimilated ... mwahahahaha
BTW, the Droid has a camera button on top of the device, but if you put it in a protective case, you can lose that functionality. I find that it's just easier to use the screen (if you can see it). These phones (generally) are that not great for one-hand photography, IMHumbleO.

@ Kioshi, I think this will help you.
The first picture was taken with a Moto Droid @ 5 MP and the second picture was taken with my Canon, at lowest possible resolution (I believe I had it down to 3MP).
The light is wrong so the shots are not very good but you can probably still see the difference in pic quality anyway.
(sorry about the pic size, guys, if I reduce the pictures to fit in the forum, you may not be able to see the difference between the 2)
Here is the one with the Droid (#1), and then here is the Canon (#2)
and note that picture # 2 is almost 1/2 the size of pic #1 . So MP alone isn't a proof that the camera is better.

Droid Incredible review: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/droid-incredible-review/
Looks like a very nice phone. Can't wait to see the Evo to compare it with this one.
The EVO will blow the Incredible out of the water, IMO. Screen size alone (ahem... yes, size matters when you're trying to cram the whole Internet in your pocket ;)
I saw a Tmobile HD2 next to a N1 this morning, and the screen difference is hugely noticeable. The HD2 completely dwarfs the N1. However, the N1's screen quality is much, much better  (hmmm, maybe I got too close to that Android @ the Google campus that day and caught the N1 bug now  )

I wouldn't consider the Droid's pics that bad. It is a phone after all. A phone will never be as good as a dedicated camera which is able to contain larger lenses with much more depth and other photo tech that simply can't fit in a tiny portion of a cell phone. Phone cameras will continue to improve but cameras will always be way ahead.
Here's a few examples from my Moto Droid from my recent trip to San Antonio.
I say they're reasonable without trying to hard. They're pretty blown up too.
The pics are from The Alamo, Sea World, The Riverwalk, and my hotel (the car was in the hotel).

the absolute only phone I would consider a good camera/phone combo and not feel I need to carry a second phone will always be my Sony W810i 2mp (R.I.P) but damn, clear shots in almost all lights and beautiful macro images (when it acted right).
but with all cameras (and phones) LIGHTING is the most important aspect.

tomato - the white beast is a Nissan GTR. The owner of that, a lady :D
Kal-El - when i said Casio Exilm, i meant the cell phone Casio Exilm by Verizon...because the GTR pic is taken from that Exilm phone w/ 5.1 mp ;)
That is why i said Moto Droid pic quality doesn't cut it for me.
I know what you mean, but to me, personal preference lol..i rather have one pocket having a bulge rather than two (phone in left pocket and digital camera in the other pocket). That is why I hunt out for overall good cell phones w/ great picture quality. America is slowly catching up, but picture quality on some phones in South Korea and Japan..are incredible...they are on 12 mp camera and higher now lol~
tomato - dont get sucked in by N1 just yet! Hold on....

04-22-2010, 03:06 PM
^ Hahahaha!!! How did you know?!!!
I had the N1 in my hands for *a while* yesterday and let me tell you, that is one FINE piece of engineering!! I can't understand why the complaints in the forum are so ferocious.
We were in a building that didn't have 3G so the phone was on Edge. Still, that thing is BLAZING FAST!!! Web pages loaded practically as fast (on Edge!!) as the Droid on VZW 3G.
The (AMOLED?) display is gorgeous. It feels fantastic in the hands.
The reported "issue" with the "back, home, menu, and search" virtual buttons is kind of a non-issue for me. You just have to hit the buttons at a certain angle rather straight down. big f'n deal!!
And I have a STRONG incentive to stay with T-MO (my unlimited plan with TMo is $55 a month v. $70 on Sprint? more than that on VZW and AT&T, and that's without taxes).
Maybe now that all these cool phones are out, we should start talking about plans, no? (of course, we still don't know how much the EVO is going to cost per month)
One thing I'm finally getting is that no matter what I get, the next best thing is gonna be coming out 3 months later and I'm gonna kick myself for not waiting another month or two. But that next best thing is still gonna be obsolete next year, so I DNK. To be honest, I'm really sick of waiting now........ OK, I"ll try to hang on until the end of the month!

Yeah, dont worry too much about a better thing coming out soon right after...just know that after 3-5 years down the road, you will have the next best thing, better than all the phones that came out after your initial phone.
Yea, phone plans would be good...where to get the better deal~ SO far, I hold Sprint to have the best deal + connectivity packaged all in one.
tomato
04-22-2010, 04:28 PM
^ with a new contract, I would agree with you. Sprint: $69.99 + tax for 450 minutes + unlimited data and text and the little goodies they give you like Nascar and NFL live if you're into that sort of thing is a pretty good package. And the Sprint network is considerably better in the Bay Area than what it used to be.
Still, my existing plan w/ Tmo is $55+ tax, pretty hard to beat.
I really would have liked to see the N1 on Verizon, though, only to compare it to the T-Mo / AT&T N1. Oh well.

BTW, that reminds me, Kioshi , I haven't found out much about multi-language support. I went to play with the VZW Incredible (awesome phone BTW) but couldn't figure it out. There maybe an app in the Android market that might help you text in dual languages, but it doesn't come on the phones out of the box as far as I can tell.
For European languages, you just go into the settings, and disable auto correct -that's 2 clicks away - (or you can even change the phone language if you want) before texting. A bit of a pain. For Asian languages or langauges with different characters, you're gonna have to use an app to text. That's my understanding but I can't really prove it or disprove it because I'm still phoneless right now.

^ I strongly, strongly recommend you look at the EVO before you commit to the Incredible. EVO is simply the best Android phone on the market right now.
It's not so much the extra MP or the front facing camera, it's the little bit of extra screen you get that makes all the difference IMO.

05-24-2010, 02:44 AM
"Froyo" is the updated operating system on your android smart phone.
Right now, the most recent Android smart phones (Nexus 1, Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid, EVO, etc.) are running on "eclair" Version 2.1, I believe. Google just released 2.2 (Froyo) but it's only out on just a few Google phones so far.
Every time G releases a new update, they call it the name of a pastry (there was donut, cupcake, eclair and now froyo) and they put a giant replica of it next to the Android sculpture on the Google campus
Check this out, the new "froyo" sculpture is out.
http://www.androidcentral.com/froyo-sculpture-finally-unveiled-googles-campus
these sculptures are enormous. The Android dude is probably somewhere between 12 and 15 feet high.

I'm guessing not initially because it has Sense UI already on it, but HTC has made some kind of a promise earlier this year and said that all the devices they released in 2010 should be able to get it (yes, including the mytouch slide Shroomster's wife is gonna want in about a week  ). They didn't say when, though.
(Sense UI is a user interface that sits on top of the android operating system.)
What is likely gonna happen is that your EVO will come out with 2.1 out of the box and in a couple of months (?), you'll be getting an OTA (over the air) update.
http://gizmodo.com/5543847/htc-says-your-2010-android-phone-will-most-likely-get-froyo
EVO is the hottest Android phone right now, followed closely by the Incredible Droid on VZW so I doubt HTC will drop the ball on that one.

OK, so I was at Radio Shack today picking up an adaptor for my SD card, and I spoke to the guy at the counter about the  EVO.
Apparently today is the last day to pre-order at Radio Shack and be guaranteed to receive the EVO on its scheduled roll-out date.
You need $50 down to pre-order. You need to qualify for an upgrade or be ready to sign a new 2 year contract with Sprint.
Plans start at $69.99 and up to $99.00 + $10 mandatory fee for "heavy data usage" (tethering extra)
In San Francisco, 4G networks are supposed to roll-out in September of 2010.
If you are a AAA member (that's new), or a credit union member, you qualify for a 10% discount on the monthly plan (but that's before they add on the $10 and the tax).
(@ Kioshi, I'm pretty sure there is a 30 day guarantee / full refund, so check it out, looks like you can't go wrong.) You have 30 days in California to cancel the contract and return the phone, 14 days in other states. (Yup, we're special in California)

@kioshi the EVO is remarkably thin, considering all the stuff they packed in there. But it's rounded on the back so it slides in a pocket easily.
You'll certainly feel it in your pocket, though because it's hefty and wider than a standard candy bar phone.
Just go look at it, it's the best way for you to judge if it's for you or not. It'll be out next week at Radio Shack, Best Buy and Sprint stores.

I'm between 2 models, have been for 2 weeks and if I can believe the comments on the geek blogs and sites, I'm not alone ... The  EVO  is possibly the Top Dog out there right now, and when I had it in my hands, I developed a huge lust for it. But it does have a couple of issues and may not be the best choice for me. (Battery life worries me the most, size not an issue for me)
The other phone I have in mind will be my default fall-back phone (it, too has its own issues, and strong points, but different ones).
Friday, I have an appointment at Radio Shack to go play with an live EVO, which will undoubtedly help me decide one way or the other, so we'll see...
You know it's really hard to decide how you like a hand-held unit until you actually hold it in your hands ;)

Meh, my sony w810i, and the mt3g were kinda no brainers for me, never even held them lol. I had liked the touch pro 2 and had it for 2 days or so, but windows limitations and kinda flimsy flip up killed it for me.

Originally I wanted to buy the G1, b/c it had everything I wanted, but they talked me out of it. Then I wanted the Hero and I forget what happened there or why I couldn't get it. Now it looks like they're cranking out phones every 2 months, so no matter what you get, you're likely to have buyer's remorse in 6 weeks  I predict that no matter what I get, the Samsung Galaxy S is going to kick it's little phone-@ss in 6 - 12 weeks, and then we'll be looking at the fall / holiday releases... so enough waiting.
Anyway, it's D-day minus one if I'm gonna pull the trigger on the EVO so we'll see ;)

For the longest time I thought I was gonna get it too, but now my heart is set on another ;)
I went to Tmo to see what they look like in person and they don't have them out yet, not even a little demo unit, if you can believe that. They said they're gonna have them for display in a couple of weeks. They will throw the phone a party just like they did last year when they launched the MT3G. (Last year they really went overboard with the advertising, even had guys jumping with colored parachutes over the financial district, SF)

@ tomato: I saw my friends HTC Evo..the screen is insanely BIG!!! Very light. Only complaint from him is...battery life and the mandatory 4G connection fee. So w/ my discount the monthly price would come around to...$66 roughly, not bad.
Now lets see if they can support asian characters on it...once i see korean or mandarin characters...japanese will soon become a possiblity on it. Good find, theres hope for me. Thank you.

It's either one or two years for the full discount for existing customers, you're probably not eligible if you bought a phone within the last year. It's the same with every other carrier in the US. Call up and say you're going to cancel, that might work?-:iono:

You are probably still under contract for the palm pre. Usually when carriers give you a phone at a discount, that your phone for the next 2 years, unless you go out of pocket and pay for the new phone full price.
Same thing if you have a specific carrier plan you want to keep.
For ex., I'm with T-Mobile right now, out of contract, and I have an old plan. In order for me to get a new smart phone and still keep my old plan (the current plans are a more expensive), I have to go out-of-pocket and pay for the phone full price. Otherwise, if I want to benefit from the discount on the phone, I have to accept a new plan (and go back on a 2-year contract).
I don't think it's unique to these 2 carriers. I believe VZW does the same thing, and I'm pretty sure AT&T is even worse (but let's not even go there ).
Kioshi is right. Just wait for a sale in the fall when all the "new and improved"devices come out (usually major phones come out around father's day, and again in the fall, close to the holidays). That's because there are 2 major phone conventions during the year where they announce the new phones. So the existing phones will go on sale eventually.
I remember getting all P/O at T-Mo when they were having deals for "new customers" and I'm thinking what about me, where is my deal for being a loyal customer, uh? Comcast is the same way. I think that's just the way these companies do business. :frown:

I think that's just the way these companies do business.
"That's just the way it is" doesn't make it right or ok. Anyone defending Sprint on this point doesn't understand integrity in business.
It's our lack of will to stand up and say "do it right" that makes the system the way it is. We are responsible.

06-11-2010, 04:24 PM
Garm, I'm not defending them (or am I? ) I'm just saying, it is what it is. :iono:
That is actually why I have so much trouble deciding between my 2 devices actually.
what the heck, why keep it a secret ...
In the balance, I give you ... drum rolls ...
The Nexus One, and the EVO. [insert pics here]
Even before comparing the units and how they perform, let's talk carriers.
The N1 is on T-Mo, a company I like to do business with because: 1) their plans are reasonable, 2) they have outstanding customer service (I can personally vouch for that, although it's well known in the industry), 3) they offer flexible, month-to-month plans, do not require you to sign a contract unless you want a subsidized phone. Negative: the network in SF is a little spotty which makes for a lesser performance, unfortunately. Not a deal breaker (I never dropped a call like folks do on AT&T all the time) but annoying because you just sit and wait for your stuff to load. And again, it depends where you are in the BAy Area. I understand the folks down in the South Bay have no problem whatsoever (maybe TMo threw an extra tower outside the Google campus or something )
EVO on Sprint. In San Francisco and in the Bay Area, Sprint's network is strong. Negatives: Sprint doesn't offer flexible plans. Sprint requires a $10/month surcharge for the EVO even if you live in an area that doesn't have 4G. Sprint requires a contract, even if you pay for the phone full price. Lastly, Sprint is not famous for their customer service - although I understand they are trying.
It's hard to make the decision because it's not just between 2 phones, it's between 2 carriers as well.
Now if I were to compare the units, you'd be shocked to know that in some respect, the N1 outperforms the EVO. On the other hand, you should see the pictures the EVO can take  and that screen ... man, THAT is how we're supposed to surf the web on a mobile device. :respekt: not to mention you can actually see the screen better in direct sunlight IMO.
*sigh*
Anyone got a quarter? ;)
tomato
06-11-2010, 04:30 PM
To further complicate matters, performance indoors isnt the same as outdoors.
The sprint's network s signal doesn't penetrate buildings as well as TMo's for whatever technological reason.
tomato
06-11-2010, 04:33 PM
Finally...
I think my cost to own on EVO-Sprint is going to be something like about $15-20 a month more than the N1 on TMo, but I need to sit down and calculate over a period of 2 years because paying for the N1 full price in order to go month-to-month also changes the CTO over 2 y. if that makes any sense.

I know, I know, just pick one...

Is that in the browser or across the OS? I saw that TK. I actually literally *saw* it on a unit. :frown:
The fact that the phone doesn't operate as well when not grounded is not a big deal IMO since you can resolve the problem by just putting your finger on the phone.
The screen "coming unglued" could be a bigger problem. Although, if you keep your phone in a case like otterbox or something similar, it should go a considerable way towards keeping your phone in the best possible shape.
What I have noticed so far is a little bit of light leakage under the capacitive buttons, same as all the reviewers. That doesn't mean the phone is coming apart, but who knows. So much for being an early adopter :frown:

And to be honest, I still don't know which one is going back. :bonk::bonk::bonk:
I've obtained RMA's and everything, got my shipping supplies ready, backed up my data .. but ...
there isn't one device substantially superior to the other IMO. Yes, the EVO has better specs (more ROM, a bigger screen) but as soon as I think I've made up my mind, I discover a feature that doesn't work as well as it does on the N1 or whatever.

the problem only happens on the keyboard so across the OS... if i try to hit delete it thinks i hit L or :-)... but i leave the phone on 24 hours a day... reboot and works great again... i have had problems with the pinch zoom but its pretty rare and only happens on google maps (it zooms in and out really fast) as for the browser i havent had that problem ... google voice is pretty cool... all your voice mail has a transcript with google voice

Joey, when you are at the google splash page, can you pinch/zoom or +/- zoom the page? Mine is stuck. Can't zoom the search results either. :iono: (EVO surfs the net perfectly, even shows you ads and stuff that N1 doesn't (on 2.1)
Maybe that's why Froyo includes "browser updates"
One thing that worries me about the EVO is that you're still limited to the phone's internal memory to store apps until Froyo comes out (unless you root? but that's not for the faint of the heart), and that's probably not gonna be for months. Internal phone memory is about the same as the N1.

no you can't zoom in on a mobile web page... on a normal web page you can... if u go to the google mobile search page u can click classic and u can zoom in after that... the 2.2 OS update (which will come out in a month or two for the N1 first) has flash support so all the ads should show after that... if ur worried about internal memory N1 does allow you to use a bigger memory stick... unless ur talking about the built in memory

No, I was talking about internal memory. Internal memory is really low (comparatively) and phone won't let you store on the SD card unless you have froyo and your apps are compatible. That's where iPhone users have an advantage (well not for long ;D)

Shroomster, I almost did.
Putting one back in the mail today was *REALLY* hard.
In the end the guy at HTC helped me make the decision. (nice people at HTC, by the way) I truly didn't know until the last moment.
And I'll give you the reasons for the choice if you're interested.
Each device has a lot to offer and some drawbacks.
Picking one over the other was a matter of trade-offs, I guess.

main reasons: bigger screen, more ROM, bigger SD card (ok that last one is not that big a deal), better camera (suprised me, there! but I'm actually using it and leaving my Canon at home!) but most importantly more reliable network
I hate to say it cause I'm still not a huge fan of Sprint but in the Bay Area (SF in particular) they really have good coverage. So in the end, I went with that.
I miss the N1 already because: :cry::cry:
- better battery life
- better looking AMOLED screen (indoors at least)
- easier to hold and to operate one-handed
- nice, sturdy metal construction, beautiful unit
- trackball was kind of handy, plus it lit up when you got mail
- vanilla android FTW, simple uncluttered look, easy to operate
- Landscape KB really easy to use, uncluttered, perfect
- faster Google updates straight from big G months ahead of everyone else
- unlocked / no carriers' bloatware pre-loaded and no carriers' restrictions
- T-Mobile IMO is a much better company, better plans, better customer service
- loved how all the apps on the N1 interacted smoothly together.
- The little things: cool little stuff like the "android" emoticons built in the texting app, the gooffy 'DOINK" ringtone, the little Android neoprene sleeve that came with it, nice touch...
- finally it was a GSM phone, means I could take it with me when I go abroad.
Oh, well. It's gone now so I get to play with my new EVO friend.
The screen is fabulous and signal is strong which makes internet surfing much more pleasant. Call quality seems to be good. Sense UI, I found out, can be turned on or off on the EVO without rooting, so if I ever get sick of it (already turned off half of the widgets) I can turn it off .
And then, of course you can always root and put your own custom ROM on it ;) Maybe in time when I feel more confident, I will
So that's the end of the story for me I think. I'm still well within my 30 days but I'm done looking, this unit is just gonna have to do since I signed the contract.
I'm confident that if there is any manufacturer's defect (like TK mentioned, for instance), HTC will make it right for me. Otherwise, the ETF on Sprint is $200 ;)
Give me a few days and I'll give you some fmore feedback on the EVO if you're interested.
Anyway, what do you guys think of my decision?
tips, tricks, criticism, all welcome
