View Full Version : Door Lock Beep?

Okay, I just bought a 2007 Yaris at a Honda dealership yesterday. When I bought it, the keyless entry was not working. The car was still under Toyota's new car warranty, so I figured I would just go get the remote re-programmed. Well, I got to the Toyota dealership and they looked at the keyless remote, which looks identical to the key from my Corolla, and determines that it is in fact an aftermarket key. He also pointed out that it was not an engine immobilizer key. I did not think to ask at that point how it started the car if it was not one. They did program the key, and it works, however when unlocking and locking the doors, the car does not beep as my Corolla (2009) and RAV4 (2006) both do.
Is the car supposed to beep when you lock the doors via the keyless remote? Should I be concerned with the fact that a non-engine immobolizer key is starting the car just fine?
Thanks for your help!

Only if you have a Toyota anti-theft alarm. Without it, the keyless does not beep.

Really? Cause neither my RAV4 nor Corolla have an alarm, but they both beep.

The Yaris does not beep and should not beep. Can you take a picture of the remote and post it?

I cant take one and post it right now, but it looks exactly like this one, minus the trunk pop button. There is a Toyota emblem on the backside, but when I was at the dealership, the service guy showed me an authentic toyota remote and the emblem was slightly smaller on that one. He also showed me a bump in the un-cut portion right next to the plastic on the authentic one, which mine did not have.

AFAIK, the acknowledgement or answer-back function on the keyless remote
only flashes the hazard lights to tell you if the doors are locked or unlocked.
Check out page 46 of the Door Lock pdf:

The above is from the 2007 repair manual that etimago has posted at:

CTScott can probably answer your questions about the immobilizer, but
I thought I read that the Canadian models had it and the USA models did
not, but I don't know that for sure.
BTW, here is the link for the Immobilizer pdf:

CTScott would be the expert I presume.

My 2010 has immobilizer but does not beep. just blinks the corner markers. once for lock, twice for unlock. I have thought about putting a relay to beep the horn when it locks.

Keyless entry does not beep, lights flash.
I think wanting the beep is very insensitive. I lived in an apartment and one of the tenants bought a jeep and after a week or so had an alarm installed. He would return 1:30 in the morning and set his alarm. The beep would wake me because I had a ground floor apartment facing the parking lot. I thought that person was very selfish and insensitive.

The previous owner could have bought the parts for the keyless entry and installed them by themselves. You can buy those keys on ebay.

The car had keyless anyway with the power package. They just got a replacement remote for some reason or another.

Oh, OK. Well either way, the car should not beep and does not have an engine immobilizer.

My 2008 Corolla didn't beep, when I asked my dealer why, they said it was because I did not go with the security system.

I have an 07 HB and mine does beep. I had the dealer install the keyless when I first bought it. My remote looks different than the one you posted.

The owners manual talks about engine immobilizer. Was it just an option for certain trims?
EDIT: I did some research and found my answer. It was a separate option.

In Canada there is a law that all cars must have it therefore their Yaris's come with it. Most 2007 Yaris in the US did not have the engine immobilizer. If you can take your key to Wal-Mart, have a copy made, and start your car with the copy, you do not have the engine immobilizer.

They probably installed an aftermarket kit.

My 2007 HB with the power package doesn't beep, but my 2012 Corolla S beeps. Neither have break in alarms. It's just cost cutting.
Also, my 2012 Corolla S has an immobilizer, maybe that's the difference?

I contacted Toyota, and apparently the beep has something to do with the immobilizer.
A Yaris with an immobilizer will beep, but one without the immobilizer will not. I am in Canada right now, and the Yaris is very popular here. I hear them beep quite often, even the older models back to 2006.
Interestingly enough, I think that applies to their other cars too as my 2012 Corolla S has an immobilizer, and it does, beep.

I believe the first year where you saw "immobilized" Yaris' in Canada was in 2008. I have an RS model here in Canada and the immobilizer was not an option in 2007.
You can tell if you have an immobilized car as your ignition will have a plastic black ring around it if you have it, and a silver ignition with NO plastic ring if you have a normal vehicle.

That is of course if you have the original keys. If you don't who knows what you will have. If you are like me and made a habit of losing keys, you will have random keys absolutely everywhere and carry 2 or 3 around with you at all times.

As per this thread .. and CTScott, "No Black ring .. no immobilizer"
It is NOT really about the keys, but rather if your car is so equipped.

I believe this can be programmed in the ECU's theft deterrant options. It clearly shows in the manual that this is an option that can be programmed with a smart meter. It CAN beep, now if only someone would writeup about how to do that?:headbang:

Even the ones with immobilize, so it will not beep. I'm fine with that.
My Toyota Echo had the RS3200 security system option installed and it beeps locking and unlocking the doors.
