I don't know how well publicized this information is, but it should certainly be of great interest to anyone thinking about buying a new 2010 Yaris.
I was trying to trade-in my 2009 Yaris Sedan that I bought brand new and have only owned for thirteen months for a new 2010 Corolla S, and they would only allow me $10,000 for trade-in. (My car stickered for $16,514.)
They wouldn't budge from this number, and they explained that there is going to be a MAJOR push to clean out the inventories of 2010 Yarisses, and with those huge discounts coming up, they could not allow me what they otherwise would be able to allow me.
The guy said that they are going to soon be selling the 2010s for 2% UNDER invoice, and Toyota was going to kick in $750 to reduce the price even more. He said there is a styling change coming up on the 2011s, and they don't want too many 2010s left by that time.
Hope this information helps some folks.

Oh, I guess I should make it clear that I am not unhappy with my Yaris. It's just that I LOVE to buy new cars. Lord knows I have done that WAY too often.
I really like the looks of the 2010 Corolla S, and the dealer allowed me to drive one home and keep it overnight. It's definitely a sweet little car.
I'll just keep working down the pay-off on the Yaris and trade later. I have already taken the biggest hit on depreciation anyway. That happens the moment you drive off the dealer's lot with a new car.
I know I will take another hit on resale value when they come out with the incentives on the 2010s, but I simply cannot take $10,000 for the car.

I don't know, Mater.
Check Edmunds.com or some other site where you can get a car priced with options. They even show invoice price on Edmunds, so figure 98% of that minus $750, which is what you would pay according to what my salesman told me today. That's after this program gets started, though, not right at the moment. Hmmm, maybe it is already in effect but not being publicized yet. Why don't you try to find out? Let us all know.
One thing about the Edmunds.com invoice price is that it does NOT include ad fees. Ad fees vary by region, and that is why Edmunds does not include them, but they are really part of the dealer's cost. Ad fees are collected by the manufacturer from the dealerships to cover the cost of advertising.
For example, Edmunds says that the invoice price for the Corolla I was looking at ($19,005 sticker price) is $17,346, but my salesman showed me that the true invoice cost was $17,669. The difference is the ad fee.

Most dealers don't keep many Yaris's (or any) in stock anyways. I have several dealers in my area and rarely do I see a Yaris on the lot. So Toyota's "Major Push" can probably be done with one finger.

They have quite a few at the dealership where I was attempting to buy the Corolla, which is the same dealership where I bought the Yaris. The salesman said he is afraid that they overbought on the 2010s and might have a hard time getting all of them sold.

I don't think that the 2011 is going to be any different than the 2010. I got a copy of the 2011 dealer model reference this week, and the model numbers and VDS are identical to 2010, which theoretically indicates no change from 2010.

Yaris hatchbacks are in very short supply where I live. The dealer has a lot packed with Vitara, tC, xD, Corolla, Prius, etc, but the Yaris hatchback inventory drains daily. Today the web site says 40 corollas, 25 camrys, 12 xD, 13 xB, 1 yaris sedan, 0 Yaris hatchback. There have usually been 3-6 Yaris on the lot in the front row next to the highway over the last 6-8 months, with various colored cars disappearing regularly.

When I bought mine, it was the only certified used one in stock. While I was signing the financing paperwork, another customer was there test driving it, and wanted to buy it.

I'm looking at the 2010's now - Did the salesman give you any idea when these discounts will take place?
Thanks for the info Tom!
This place is great!!

Sounds like he was just making up stuff to "justify" a lower trade in. That or you happened to find the 1 honest car salesman in the planet.

I have no further information. I cannot attest to the validity of what I was told. I thought I would pass it along so that others could benefit by it, if it proved to be true.
It's up to the prospective buyer to check it out to see if it's true. It would be a shame to make your deal and then find out a couple weeks later that you could have saved several hundred dollars.
If someone can verify this info or can refute it, then please post here in this thread for the sake of those in the market for a 2010 Yaris.
I'll see if I can get any more info from my dealer.
Thanks.

Dad,
I'm in exactly the same boat as you (I also like to swap cars often). My year-old loaded '09 liftback is also worth $10K in trade. The car stickered at ~$16.5K. For the time being, it looks like we'll have American car levels of depreciation.
I blame the latest Toyota financing promos (and the UAW/government witch hunt) for the crappy resale values.

Yeah, anytime they put incentives on new cars, the used car values drop accordingly. It would be a great time to buy with no trade-in.
They have come up to $10,850 "unofficially" on trade-in allowance, and I think will take them up on that deal, if I can slip my wife a Valium.
I say "unofficially" because that is coming from my salesman, not from the used car appraiser.
We have aleady agreed on the price of the new Corolla S, and that is invoice price + TTL + $199.50 "processing fee." That comes to $19,046.61. (Sticker is $19,005). If I can get that deal on the new one and get $10,850 trade-in, I will consider that to be a decent deal and will probably go though with it. Of course, I will be getting the 0% interest for 60 months.
My monthly payment would only go up by $68, but I would have to make 13 more payments than I would if I kept the Yaris.
I hope we can find out about the supposed styling change for the 2011 Yaris. I will definitely share whatever I am able to find out.

Here is some information that says that there is no styling change or any other major change for the 2011 Yaris.

I sympathize with YarisOwnersDad, since I'm a perennial car flipper. The Yaris shouldn't have the crappy resale that it's currently saddled with, but there's been a nasty convergence of negative factors. Unfortunately, it looks like the choice is either to enjoy the Yaris for the foreseeable future or take a big hit in the secondary market.
As with the thread that you mentioned above, car flipping does not make financial sense (although I would never criticize someone for doing so - see sig).

P.S.
What I said in that post that WeeYari refers to is all true. I just find it hard to follow my own advice. I guess I have gone so far and am so old now that it doesn't even matter anymore.

My salesman says that he did not mean that there would be a body style change with the 2011 model. He was just saying that if I keep the Yaris until there is a body style change, the resale value would take a hit. I guess the 2012s are supposed to have a change in styling.
He DID say that they are already selling 2010 Yarisses at 2% below invoice in order to make room for the 2011s. That should be good info for you 2010 Yaris shoppers who are wondering what kind of deal you should hold out for.
Tom
i think y'all need to keep one new car, and find some older, less expensive toys. mid 80's supras and mr2's are dirt cheap.
