View Full Version : Alas, poor Yaris, I knew him well

Well, I have done it. I have traded-in my Yaris for a brand new 2010 Corolla S. I signed the papers Tuesday, but the new car is at a dealership in Ohio, and I can't make the swap until tomorrow. There were no Corollas in the area that had the options that I wanted, so my dealer had to do a dealer trade.

If things go as planned, I will drive my Yaris to work for the last time in the morning. I have to admit, that is kind of a sad thought.

The Yaris is a great little car for what it is designed to do, but I wanted a car with a little more "sex appeal," you know, a little more "pizzaz."

I would recommend a Yaris to anyone for basic transportation.

Best of luck with your new ride. The Corolla is a reliable rig as well. Not to be rude, but your statement about the Corolla being "sex appeal" as opposed to a finely done Yaris escapes me...to each their own.

P.S. There really is no Toyota in the line up anymore that would be classified as "sex appeal" out the box unfortunately.

Thanks, Guys. I had BETTER like the Corolla, because I will be married to it for five years. I am SO upside down on it, as you can imagine.

I took out some gap insurance, in case I total that puppy.

correct quote ("I knew him well" is a very popular misquote):

Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio, a fellow of infinite

My gorge rises at it.

Lexus IS for sex appeal!

The LF-A is a sex buffet. I don't know if you mean the Lexus IS250/350/c/sedan/-F or Lexus in general. The rest of the line up (besides the LF-A and maybe the LS) is a bit of snooze fest. I love the cars, and would likely buy (another one) but exciting and sexy, they are not. Reliable, well built, perfect craftsmanship and build quality, and superb luxury, yes.

why?

Carolla......sex appeal? AHHHHHHHHHH

However, I have seen some nice carollas that are dropped with some wheels. They don't look too bad with that lip kit (if they come with them now? S models?).

one of the first posts i have read here before i joined YW was yours..how you got excited when you got the new yaris for your son and you also wanted one..and how much hassle you went through to buy the car.i see you like new cars (who doesn't love the smell of new and the ripping of the nylons from the seats) and i wish you luck with the corolla.but i think you might come back to yaris because of MPG..anyway,good luck.

Congratulations, Dad. As a fellow car-flipping addict, I know you're excited to get your new toy. Hopefully the deal wasn't too tough to swallow.

If it's not prying too much, what did your dealer give you for your Yaris?

My dealer (who is very honest) was musing about market conditions; the implication was "make me an offer" on in-stock cars.

Hope you enjoy your new car!

I think, though, that when the inevitable midlife (? -- I'm a little late for that) urge to start wearing lots of gold chains and silk shirts unbuttoned to my navel hits, I'll have to upgrade to something other than a Corolla for "sex appeal."

OK, Guys, so maybe "sex appeal" was the wrong term. I just wanted something a little sportier than a Yaris sedan, and I think a Corolla S fits that description.

The EPA MPG rating is only 2 MPG less for the Corolla vs the Yaris sedan, so I hope to be driving a little more stylish car without giving up a significant amount of fuel economy.

Yah those don't look half bad. I know you don't care about modding your car externally; but i saw a few of those with probably 18" or 19" wheels and they actually looked really good.

Hey, if I had any doubts about this trade they went out the window (or maybe out the moon roof) this morning during my 24 mile drive to work.

I had the moon roof open and the JBL stereo cranked up, and I THOROUGHLY enjoyed my commute!

The Corollas have the feature of on board MPG computing and display, and if it is anywhere close, I am going to be very happy. I reset the average MPG read-out to 0 just after leaving my house this morning, and when I got to work it was reading a little over 40 MPG! I don't expect the actual calculated MPG to really be that high, but the indication is that this car will do very nearly as well as my Yaris did on fuel economy.

personally i think great pick! if i had the money for the car and for insurance on that i car i would have gotten the corolla S. only thing i would have done differently was i would have picked a more exciting colour, lol. out of all the blue and reds (even black and grey) i could never pick toyota stock dull silver. lol. Well, RS, that's why they make different colors. To me the silver isn't "dull." That picture that I posted doesn't do the car justice. There was a solid cloud cover at the time I took the picture, and you don't see the metallic aspect of the paint job. Trust me, the car looks good.

YarisOwnersDad, wouldn't it be smarter to lease your cars at 24 month intervals if you feel the need to always be in a new car? Or is 2 years to much? Purchasing a brand new car every year (it seems) is throwing thousands of dollars away and constantly keeping you upside down.

Leasing is designed for this purpose and will lower your monthly payment to boot.

Your thoughts on this?

I drive about 18,000 miles per year. That doesn't work out on a lease, right? They penalize you big time for the high mileage.

Isn't the idea of a lease that you pay enough per month to cover the depreciation of the vehicle for the time that you have it? Would I be any better off one way vs the other?

With that subwoofer in my trunk, the Yaris exceeds the Ford Focus Audiophile Edition in sex appeal, in my experience+opinion. You'd have to wiggle a Mercedes AMG with upgraded audio system in front of me for comparison before anything would begin to rise in my pants.

You're probably right. It appears Toyota only offers 12 or 15,000 miles/yr leases. I believe some companies offer higher mileage deals.

As long as you except the cost of your car buying addiction, then it's obviously your decision and we shouldn't judge.

Just curious as to your reasons:

Is it because you get bored with cars very quickly?

Is it that you feel you bought the wrong car after a year?

Is it that you simply have to have that brand new fresh car all the time?

You gave your reasoning as to why you got a Corolla S, which I myself love.
It makes perfect sense to want something a bit bigger with more comfort and features. Yet still efficient and economic. You won't get an argument from me.

Thing is, next year what will be the reason for trading in your Corolla S? The next generation Yaris?

As for the answer to your question, probably the last choice would come closest. I just plain love new cars and trucks.

Partly it is a search for "just the right" vehicle. The last time I traded three times in less than two years the last vehicle in that series was a 2001 Jeep Wrangler, which I still have almost ten years later.

I will HAVE to keep the Corolla for a long time for financial reasons; I have gone as upside down as I can get. I really do think it is a car that I can be satisfied with for the long haul. Hey, given my history, I wouldn't blame anyone for being skeptical about that, but that is the way I feel right now.
