traded in Odyssey for Yaris

Okay... talk about one extreme to another... I traded in an 02 Honda Odyssey minivan...for an 09 Yaris sedan. But I gotta tell you, I love the way the Yaris drives. Its smoother than the odyssey... quieter than the odyssey...so much easier to maneouver. I am sure I will enjoy gassing it up at the pumps so much more too!

i assume u had minivan cuz u needed it (i.e. big family?). what prompted you to get a yaris over the minivan? just curious

toad-- yes, tires & brakes. Had to replace both generally twice a year.

darkmoon-- I bought the Odyssey because at the time I worked alot with kids, so having a larger vehicle was necessary. Past few years though, with a career change, the van wasnt needed. The odyssey had 250,000kms on it, some major things were starting to break down, plus the gas mileage (350-400kms per tank, 65litre tank!) the costs were just getting too high. So, researched the yaris, and hence, I am now a yaris driver.

My wife drives an ‘06 Odyssey. I traded my Accord for the Yaris and my wife wishes she could do the same if it weren’t for the 3 kids, hockey bags, soccer balls, annual camping trip to Darien Lake, etc. :laugh:

I don’t think she’s ever taken out the Odyssey to do groceries and other usual errands ever since we got the car. She agrees it's much more fun to drive and waaaaaay cheaper on gas :thumbsup:

As soon as we get into the same situation as yari09 (i.e. minivan no longer needed) we will get rid of the odyssey.

There are just some essential things and luxury you just can't do without a minivan, such as when you go on a multi-day out-of-town road trips with full sized luggage, camping gears/tents, in-car entertainment such as overhead dvd (for movies/xbox games and yes we have spoiled kids :)) but keeps us from listening to that dreaded “are we there yet?” whinings throughout the whole trip, lol.

toy toronto: I agree with you. Camping for us is just around the corner, and now we arnt sure how we are gonna put all of the camping supplies in the poor yaris. Oh well... we will figure it all out :)

so, i just used my first full tank of gas on the yaris. Dare to Compare:

Odyssey: 11 L/100km (21 MPG) was my average
Yaris: 6 L/100km (38 MPG)

Now... if I would stop driving @ 130 km/h (RPM 3500-4000) I could probably save a bit more!

It sounds like you made a practical choice switching to the Yaris from the Odyssey given the change in your needs and the expenses associated with the larger vehicle. Gas mileage and maintenance costs can add up quickly. Enjoy your new Yaris, and who knows, maybe a Toyota get-together is in your future.
