I want a Yaris.
I decided I want a 2010 yaris because of the "new" safety systems upgrade.

Is this good reasoning?

Earlier years do not have the upgrades that 2010 does?

Thank you,

Pauly

Nothing inherently wrong with that logic, although I really wish there was a switch to turn on/off the traction control. There are time when I enter a corner hot (on purpose) and it engages. That really puts a damper on spirited driving.

I'm not 100% sure, but I thought I read the extra safety items became standard equipment in '09. Toyota was taking a lot of hits for not including these items and charging extra when other manufactures were not-honda fit, nissan versa. So you might look at an '09 and see if it has what you want and save a ton over buying new.

If those safety items are important to you, don't buy one without them. Mine has none of them and handling/braking can be trick in emergencies. I invested in some winter tires for that time of year and it made all the difference.

Not all of the safety features were included in the 2009 model. It has more of the side-curtain air bags, but I think that's about it. Mine does not have the traction control, which came in the 2010. I think there was something else that the 2010 has that mine does not.

I had an '09 that I rolled in October.....it had standard ABS & side curtain airbags, but not the traction control and EBD (electronic brake distribution) that my '10 does.

As for a switch for the traction control.....maybe the sedans have it, but my hatchback doesn't. It is always "on"......very frustrating sometimes.

I recently bought a 2010 Yaris Hatch 5dr in Canada - and was told of two different production runs:

LE - until Nov 09 production (No Charge)

LE - from Dec 09 production ($275 CDN Charge) - more safety features including extra airbags

I bought a Yaris made in Feb 2010 - and paid $275 extra - but it had more safety features - including extra airbags.

The '09s have ABS, but not traction or "stability" controls. And they have the extra airbags.

I just purchased a 2010 sedan. Here are the safety features. All came standard on the vehicle.

They call it the Star Safety System.

Vehicle Stability Control
Traction Control (Off button is on the console)
ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD)
Driver and Front passenger Airbags
Driver and Front passenger seat mounted side airbags
Front and Rear side curtain airbags
3-point seat belts in all positions
LATCH (Lower anchor and tethers for children)
Child proof rear door locks

I hope this helps,
Steve

I just bought a 2010 Yaris Hatchback with the Star Safety System. My 1990 Honda Civic that I owned for 20 years and traded in does not even have airbags. However my 1990 Celica ST that I still own at least has a driver side airbag which was for the most part was available in luxury cars only back during the 80's and early 90's. I think it is great that these advanced safety items are now available in Toyota's entire lineup. I had to wait 20 years for them to trickle down to their cheapest car.
