I took a chance and ordered one of these 'no name' WinCE based dvd/navigation system units from ebay. They've been around for quite some time but the new(er) WinCE 6.0 based with x2 ram units caught my attention and may have improved a little.

Here's an actual company (Dynavin) that market these types of WinCE OS Nav/DVD entertainent system specifically the "OEM" builds for Audi's, BMW's etc. http://www.dynavin.com/products.php

This unit seems like a good all-in-one solution (and I could live with a few quirks here and there, it's WinCE afterall lol) but I also think anything will be an upgrade compared to the existing OEM deck IMO.

It's suppose to fit snuggly in the dash of the yaris hatch with no bezel change. The seller have confirmed it and includes all the appropriate toyota wiring harness, at least for North American version Double-DIN w/ 200mm width opening.

..and confirmed as well by CTScott from his post (http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?p=466180#post466180) here:

I'll post an update once I have it installed in about 1-2 weeks (currently in transit) and provide a quick review of the unit.

I did a search here and couldn't find any info/pictures of anyone who have installed one of these newer units recently. If you have one (even if it's older) please post up your rig on this thread and share your experiences. thanks!

Definitely, i'll post as many pics of the install as I can. I'm guessing it should not take any more than 30 minutes to swap the HU.

As for the review of the system, that I'd have to give it at least 2-3 weeks of use before I can share any pros/cons about the unit.

Im really curious how this goes for you. I had a 7" flip screen no name POS DVD player that was OK for watching TV and movies, but totally sucked for music, ran hot, and blocked my vents. Also this would save me $10/mo on my phone bill since I wouldn't need the VZ navigator anymore (although it does show gas stations and local businesses) and from the screen shots looks pretty decent. Id really like to do a carputer but complexity and cost can get pretty high.

I was considering this unit as well for my HU replacement. I'd be really eager to hear what you think about it, especially its Ipod interface whenver you have info.

I tried to research it as well, but found very little info from the company or reviews

Definately keep us poseted and good luck!

so how do you get at the ipod connection or the usb and the aux connections?
will i need to drill a hole in the glove compartment or is there another way, that will still look smart/hidden away?

because here is the back of the unit -

For the USB with my unit, I ran the cable from the back of the HU, under the center console area (with the shifter, ebrake, etc), and used one of the mounting slots next to the AUX and lock buttons. Just popped out the square, cut a square, and mounted the cable inside.

I've got pics, and I'll get them posted sometime in the next couple days and edit this with a link.

I ordered it from eBay, the price is in AUS dollar and I made an offer of $500 AUS (=approx $428 canadian). Here’s the relisted item:

I still have not received it yet so not really sure... don't really know how i'll go about routing the ipod/usb/AUX/etc connectors -- guess i'll figure that out when the time comes... but drilling holes in the glovebox might be the only option.

Yes, it came with all the wiring harness specific to toyota OEM plugs/connectors. It also came with a remote control, an iPod aux cable, external USB cable, and the external GPS antenna.

The HU install was plug 'n play an took me about 15-20 minutes. It was a perfect fit (200mm W x 100mm H opening) on my dash.

Here are some pictures I took this evening (more to come later on):

Yeah, there’s just too many bells and whistles I need to touch on but in the meantime I’d be happy to answer any questions I've not covered yet.

I’m not very good at giving out reviews but will try and do my best. I’ll have to break it apart in sections and post as many pics as I can for those who are interested.

I thought it had a separate sub line out but it doesn't. please see diagram below for the complete wiring hookup.

It has a decent sound and friends are pretty impressed once they hear it. Just an FYI though, i did upgrade my FR speakers to Kenwoods and the rear channels to Pioneers and I am running a 10" Bazooka tube with built-in 100watt amp ($40 craigslist special ) and the whole system sounds great with good bass pumping. Movies sound is also great while it supports many formats such as dvd, divx, dvd, xvid playback from a USB stick, SDHC card, and DVD media.

Ok, I’ll start my mini-review bit by bit and will do it by mentioning the different features of this HU. Once again this unit runs a Windows CE based OS v6.0 and it has 128MB of memory. I consider this HU the newer generation compared to the older versions from china that have WinCE v5.0 64MB ram and a ‘clunky’ user interface. What I also liked about this specific unit is the high resolution LCD that does 800x480 unlike the older ones and other commercial head units that can only do 400x240.

Installation:
The installations was super simple. There’s a great tutorial stickied at the top that shows exactly how to swap out the Yaris HU (thanks to Slick’s DIY amp wire running and radio trim removal). The stock dash bezel opening is 200mm x 100mm, it’s perfect for the unit and no modification was needed. I used the same HU hardware brackets and mounting screws for the new HU. I just plugged in the supplied harness and cables into the existing connectors and radio antenna and it’s up and running. Tuck away the wires, screw in the HU and put all panels back.

http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac316/mywebshare44/2010%20Toyota%20Yaris/DVD%20GPS%20Car%20Entertainment%20System/cf1b72db.jpg

I routed the USB and iPod cables under the dash and into the glove box… I couldn’t bring myself to drill any holes through. Btw, I leave my ipod nano plugged in the glove box and it charges automatically when the HU is on. I also just discovered that the USB cable can be used as a USB charger since it supplies +5V. It can charge my BT headset, iPhone, my son’s Nintendo DS, etc.. I hope this does not create a problem with the HU.

I mounted the gps antenna on top of the dashboard and not hidden underneath because I want to be certain that the satellite signals can be acquired quickly and easily by the gps.

http://i911.photobucket.com/albums/ac316/mywebshare44/2010%20Toyota%20Yaris/DVD%20GPS%20Car%20Entertainment%20System/2f39e395.jpg

Sound:
Though I've not yet logged many hours on this thing but for the short time I’ve had it and fiddled around with the treble/bass, I do find the sound VERY nice and it is clearly better than the stock HU the yaris had before. I keep repeating myself but It will take me a while before I can really comment in its overall performance or reliability – it does have tons of crazy features such as picture-in-picture (DVD and gps nav at same time, dual-zone display as in a remote LCD in backseat playing a movie while GPS nav running on main console LCD. It also has capabilities for a rear/backup camera, but you must buy the optional cam which you just plug into the rear of the HU camera input.

I’ll provide more comments later on… so stay tuned

I like how it has a nice clean OEM look to it. Since it runs windows CE are there possibilities for hacks or running some windows programs?

toy_toronto
07-21-2010, 11:40 PM
I have seen hacks and there is no doubt there are several out there. In the Dynavin forums (http://dynavin.freeforums.org/wolf-ncu-for-dynavin-devices-aio-t81.html) they talk about hacking the the main menu/media player interface and such but sounds a bit complicated (you need to register first before you can read the forums).

Here's another site where they provide utilities and different skins, however the site is in Korean

Sample menu interface: http://www.wolfzone.co.kr/index_navi.html

toy_toronto

Interface:
I like the general look and placement of the physical buttons on the HU bezel. As astoman mentioned, it has an OEM feel to it.. the same type of look the navigation system that my cousin's Lexus has in his SUV. The general GUI is not perfect (not even close to) in some of the menu can be a little clunky however that is to be expected on a low-cost, windows CE platform.. expect to see a few quirks here and there but it will perform the tasks it's intended to do... seems like a fun toy so far.

** AM/FM Radio menu interface. Preset up to 24 FM station and 8 AM station. Supports RDS such as limited radio station info, current songs title, genre, etc.

DVD/Video Playback
I understand some see this as a major hazard but please, no flames. I don't intend to watch DVD movies while driving --that's just plain stupid. I have a giant HD LCD screen in the basement for that purpose. It'll be used for passengers only or as I'm waiting for people in the parking lot. There are lots of variations of these things on EBay but I made sure the one I bought is capable of Picture-in-Picture.

Clarkson on Stig: "** Some say he naturally faces magnetic north, and that all his legs are hydraulic... "

GPS:
The unit came with 2GB SD card that contained the GPS software (Route 66) preinstalled. Route 66 works well, however i thought it wasn't as good as my tomtom or the iGO8 software which I replaced it with. I made a backup of the entire 2GB SD card on my hard drive first, then I formatted it to FAT32. I then copied the entire iGO8 with North America maps to the SD card. I was surprised that it picks up the GPS satellites very quickly (under 20 seconds) even the time when I still had the antenna hidden behind the glove box during the install. I used 2-sided tape and mounted the gps antenna on top of my dash as the final placement.

One big complain I have so far though is that there's way too many features but VERY LITTLE documentation. The manual that came with it is very high level and poorly written. I sort of have to fumble around the menus, drill down try to figure things out as I go along.

** Zoolander: "I'm not an ambi-turner". Below pic shows the PIP NAV screen on top of movie zoomed at 30%. Note the PIP size can be increased/zoomed up to 60% of screen

That's all I have for now and more to come later. I'll try to post some night shots to show the different backlighting options and how well it matches the yaris instrument panel LEDs. Yes, the buttons LED backlights can be changed to green, red, or orange on-the-fly whichever you prefer.

thanks astroman. looking back at the pictures, they really don't do the screen justice. Screen is clearer in person with good viewing angle (well, not so clear in bright sunny days just like any others) but i'll have to peel off that damn screen protector... it looks awful.

I also think 5% of the brightness is lost due to the scrn protector, i felt it added a dull/hazy look once I applied it. I'll keep it on for now until i get a good quality replacement, i'd rather not scratch the screen.

The SD format you need is microSDHC. I bought an 8GB microSD for media storage (music, divx, jpegs, etc) and works without any issue. I read somewhere that older units did not support anything larger than 1GB (..or 2GB?) because the built-in reader was not SDHC compatible.

By the way, another one of the features I really like about this thing.

It has a V-CDC menu that adds capability to rip audio CDs. It claims I can rip and store up to 5 music CDs to the unit's built-in memory. I only ripped two CDs so far and took around 10-15 minutes to rip each CD.

Once loaded, it is basically a "virtual" 6-CD Changer player. You can add/delete the stored songs later on using the GUI buttons at top of screen.

Just a word of caution. There's a bunch of these things floating around that run the WinCE OS, therefore are fairly open to changes and upgrades. Some could easily have the clunkier/older firmware while others may have the newer v6.0 CE like my unit.

Did you guys confirm with the vendor first before you ordered? Did you verify that all the other optional parts also come with it? (ex. gps antenna, etc)

08-23-2010, 03:48 AM
just as an aside, having a dedicated sub out can be very important for certain sub/amp setups as you need enough voltage being provided for a clean high gain signal...just an FYI. A great example of this is that I had issues with my internal amp getting too hot at times and the safety cut kicking in when I was using my BTA10200 with the stock H/U and the high gain via the speaker wires on the rears. Once I installed my Eclipse CD3200 H/U with the 5v pre-outs it made a huge difference. This is a serious consideration for those looking who have a full upgraded speaker system. Also it appears that this unit is not Dolby 5.1? It may sound silly to worry about that in a car, but if I am going to throw down close a half grand then I worry about those types of things. Yes, I do understand that getting quality for that price with all the bells and whistles is very tough, but with all the features that the OP is saying the H/U has I wonder why certain things were missed.

I use a 10" bazooka with a built-in 100watt (peak at best) and has L & R low level RCA inputs. I took the headunit's RL RR low level outputs as the signal going to the bazooka and I'm getting good bass. (see the wiring diagram below)

I have that sucker bookmarked, and am seriously thinking about getting it. I was wondering what kind of wattage the head unit has on its own? I'm not interested in amps or swapping out speakers, but the sound has to be at least as good as the CD/MP3 player in the car right now (stock?).

toy_toronto

I don't have an amp but i did replace the spkrs before I upgraded the HU. The new HU drove the new speakers more efficiently than the OEM radio in my opinion, my guess is the higher wattage. I'm not sure exactly how much it puts out (RMS) but specs claim 4 x 45 Watts likely at peak.

I see nothing any different watching a DVD while driving than talking on a cellphone. What idiot is going to stare at the damn screen, not paying attention to the road? It is plug 'n play on my hatchback, should be the same for the sedan but I'm not 100% sure.

This looks pretty slick, but I want to know if anyone has it rigged to play video while driving... I know it's dangerous, irresponsible, stupid, unnecessary... just wondering.

I did not have to do anything special with the wiring, you can say it's already "rigged' to play videos while driving.

<snip>

I see nothing any different watching a DVD while driving than talking on a cellphone. What idiot is going to stare at the damn screen, not paying attention to the road? You check your mirrors and speedometer, which means you CAN look away from the road for a minute without killing yourself. You can hear the DVD playing and glance over. I guess manufacturers think everyone's a fool.

it is all about the lawyers nowadays. I mean when Toyota sold the last gen Celica it came with a warning page hung on the rear view mirror.

Well, it arrived Tuesday afternoon, and I installed it Tues night. Needless to say, I have been spending a lot of time sitting in the driveway and playing.

Yes, it will play dvds while driving, unless you wire up the optional parking brake wire, and configure the software to monitor the signal.

So far I am very impressed. The fit is absolutely perfect. The mounting brackets from my stock radio went right onto the unit, and it looks as good or better than the original factory unit.

The GPS software is far and away better than my previous external Garmin unit.

It has a slot so that you can plug a micro-SD into the front, and I grabbed my 16 Gig chip out of my phone, plugged it in and it plays all my mp3s, my mpgs, etc.

As I have time to use it more, I will report back anything that I see as less than perfect, but have noticed nothing so far. In my book, $425 (shipping included) is a steal for this unit.

Awesome!!!

My christmas present this year will be one of these units.

Yes, this is the one that I got: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220660096879&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

The main reasons that drove me to this (pun intended):
Bluetooth speaker device on the visor
GPS unit hanging on the winshield
iPod in the console
Now everything is in a single unit. I loaded up a 16gb microSD with some of my favorite mp3s, and everything works great.

The biggest plus for me is the bluetooth. Previously I had a motorola unit (rechargeable) that hung on the visor. When my phone would ring while driving, I would realize that I forgot to turn on the speakerphone before I started driving. Watching TV at home, I would realize that all my calls were going to the speakerphone in the driveway which I forgot to turn off.

This unit automatically connects to my phone when I start the car. It automatically disconnects when I turn off the car. It automatically mutes the stereo when a call comes in (by the way, the GPS also mutes the stereo when it gives driving directions).

So far, everything works just as I would have designed it myself, which is good because the learning curve is short (also good because the manual is in broken english).

Soon I will post pics.

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00716.JPG

Here is the unit installed, powered down.

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00717.JPG

This is the Main Menu. You get this by pressing the "Source" button. One thing I really like is that at powerup, the unit goes directly to whatever mode you were in when you powered down. When I come out of the grocery store, the unit picks up playing my mp3 exactly where it was when I parked.

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00718.JPG

This is the FM Radio Mode. The reception is equal or better than my stock HU was. I am no audiophile, but the sound seems great.

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00721.JPG

This is the GPS Mode. I love that the GPS mutes the music when it gives you voice prompts. The map data is far better than my Garmin unit was, it even includes speed limit information for many roads, and (if you enable it) the voice alerts you that "You are exceeding the speed limit".

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00724.JPG

Bluetooth mode. I love it. It connects to my phone when I start the car, and disconnects when I turn the car off. My cellphone never leaves my pocket. In experimentation, I have been told that the mic "sounds a bit tinny", one friend of mine said that it might be the "little car" that is causing it... :moon:

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00726.JPG

This is PIP mode (Picture in Picture). In this instance I have the FM as the primary screen, and the PIP frame contains the GPS. You also have the ability to set "2 Zone" mode, so that you can direct one output to the video out (think headrest screens) while displaying a different mode on the main screen.

http://www.prue.com/photos/DSC00727.JPG

Finally, this is the mp3 mode, reading from the microSD card inserted on the lower right of the unit.

Anyway, I know this is a lot of pictures, but I tried to give a representative smattering of modes etc. If there is anything in particular that someone would like to see, let me know.

My primary worry, when buying the unit, was how "OEM" it would look installed. I really did not want weird spaces around the edge, or the faceplate not matching the bezel. If you have those worries, don't! It is at least as good a fit as the original unit.

There are still no hardware issues to report with my HU. I know, I sound like i anticipate things to break since it's "made in china" but so far it is solid -- everything works exactly like the first day i installed it.

I also realize I should really start adding the other components to the head unit since I'm not fully utilizing all of the features. I want to add the following hopefully by next year:

- Backup Camera
- AUX IN (A/V input for game consoles, Archos, etc.)
- LCD for 2-Zone output display

There was no customs on mine. It was just delivered to my house as though it had been shipped from within the U.S.

I think it has to do with China having "Most Favored Nation Trade Status" with the U.S.

Just got my unit in. Too dark tonight but tomorrow is install day... :)

Dragracer, yours has the knobs in the center. Mine has the knobs on top, but I guess it doesn't matter. Looking forward to checking out your install! I was surprised that mine got here so quickly, considering UPS said it was in Alaska yesterday!

I will install mine tomorrow hopefully.

^ Yep, eBay for mine. I swear the UPS tracking said it was in Anchorage yesterday. How'd it get thousands of miles in one day? Especially to South Jesus!

Wow.

Dragracer- that thing looks high quality. did you measure it and make SURE it's 200mm wide?

Also can you take shots of the back and is that all it came with? I don't see many cables? BACK SHOT OF UNIT PLEASE!! lol

Lastly, is there an item # or model # on it anywhere?

Thanks!

Yeah, there was thing huge harness of RCA jacks with caps on each one (about 8 or so) that I will plug into the back. I also got a camera with mine, but the cord is short and I have no idea where I would put it.

The back of mine looks exactly like Toys. Lotsa wires, GPS antenna, and stuff with it.

In the top picture, the left connector is for steering wheel controls, which I don't have. The wires for that came too though.

Just got mine installed. Factory fit and all the features that Toy showed before, so I won't bore you with them again.

I routed the iPod and USB cables into the bottom glove compartment until I figure out if I want to move them somewhere else. The GPS antenna still needs to be attached with 3M tape on the dash (ran that wire through the glove box also). I have the MicroSD of the GPS software that still has to be loaded as well. I like it.

Took about 15 minutes to do.

Some pictures below.

That just looks soooo good. I'm salivating I want one so bad. Wish I could afford one right now but its on my short list of things I will be getting some day. Congrats on getting it installed and lookin' good!

PS> Is there the ability to hook up the little Aux port between the seats to this HU? Would be nice to still be able to use that if needed.

chrisj
10-13-2010, 06:28 PM
^ Thanks. I'm sure there is a way to hook up the AUX because on the menu is a selection for AUX. There are TONS of wires coming out of the back that I didn't use.

I am having extreme issues with the GPS part of mine. I have the chip and I stick it in the right MicroSD slot. Don't know why there is a right and left one. Anyway, how do I get the GPS software into the unit, or does the card have to stay in all the time? I was playing music on one of my MicroSD cards in the right slot, and that worked fine.

The left MicroSD slot says GPS under it, and the right one says DVD under that one. That manual is a joke, really. I go into setup and it says it cannot find the GPS software. Just wondering the procedure for using the GPS software.

Do you need to leave the card in the slot or does it just load from that slot?

Mine is installed! What a freaking nightmare!

The basic install was not too bad. I had to slot the original mounting brackets as the radio set too far forward. Once I did that, the install was easy. I mounted the GPS antenna on the black plastic filler under the wipers. I already had the XM radio antenna mounted there. The GPS antenna is similar in size and shape, and both blend in very well. Photos are below.

The manual SUCKS! It took me forever to figure out how to pair my phone to the radio via blue tooth. Then the GPS came up in Chinese even though the language was set to English, and all other functions were in English. Finally figured out the GPS didn't know where to find the software. After programing in the sd card to the gps, all is well!

On mine there is a pink wire marked "park". This wire must be grounded to get a dvd to show up on the screen.

Here's where my XM antenna is mounted.

Here's the GPS antenna mounted there as well.

I don't know. I need to test that tomorrow (was getting dark on me). There are 2 slots, one on the left and one on the right. On the right one I have my music, videos, etc. The left one has the GPS software stick in it. If I have to leave it, I don't mind. It's not in the way.

I have a 2008 and 2009 sedan, will this work for me? What parts do I need (silver plastics) to cover / go around the unit

chrisj
10-16-2010, 01:49 AM
^ No idea, really. As long as you have a 200mm opening that's double din, should work. I think stuff's the same as far as the radio in the LB and sedan, isn't it? Mine's a 2009 LB.

If it is the same, you need nothing as far as fitment goes. Ends up looking stock. Flush and nice.

Looks like I need to buy a double din conversion kit for the Toyota Yaris Sedan. The standard radio on the Yaris Sedan is larger, so a kit is needed - http://cgi.ebay.com/Toyota-Yaris-Double-Din-Radio-Bezel-/300437638471?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item45f37a8d47

So I guess it will be a giant pain in the $@#@ to take the old radio out, and the entire dash plastics need to come out do this right? =/

Do you think an after market sound system like this will help or hurt you in resale value?

chrisj
10-16-2010, 10:35 PM
^ Yikes. It was fairly easy on the LB. Don't know about resale value, but I kept my stock radio to put back in if I get rid of the car (or something happens to the new radio). We plan on keeping the car anyway, so....

I know the unit is 200mm wide and is double din. Connectors for the Yaris are included. I just plugged it right in. Seems like your biggest deal will be the fitment part.

Not bad, I went to a Toyota dealer and ordered mine for $90 bucks. Here is a video on HOW TO do it! it's very easy...

I also have mine in the left slot. I had a problem with mine too, saying it couldn't find the software. I clicked on another file in the folder, something like SG08.exe I think. This software did an update and then the GPS ran okay.

I haven't tried it a 3rd time to make sure it is holding the settings, but that .exe file that comes up (showing in your picture) didn't work for me. I touched the screen inside the folder until I found the other file I mentioned above. I wasn't in the car at all yesterday so I don't know if it's still okay.

I wish others who have this unit would respond about the GPS part. No one ever mentioned having the problems we had.

Thanks for the link on the installation on the yaris sedan.

i've never installed any in - dash electronics before but i'm fairly handy when it comes to this kind of thing, and i'm great with computers.

I'm assuming from reading this entire thread that all I need to do is remove the plastics, remove the old unit, install new bracers / mounting, install the new unit (power / gps / standard audio plug cables / right?)

anyone have a more detailed walk though @ all? Christmas is coming up, and it might be worth it to get something in here and pull out my Garmin which has been adhered to my dash for the last 2+ years.

chrisj

Okay, on the GPS software load. It came up fine today, and yes, the chip is in the left slot. You have to run that SG08.exe something program instead of the other one though.

I am having one little issue, and it's that I can't find the menu to watch video from my MicroSD chip. Music yes, video no. Of course the manual is useless in just about everything to do with this unit.

I tried browsing and changed to igo9 utility.exe, now it doesnt say cannot find software, it just doesn't do anything

It should read: \storagecard\igo8_8.3.2.79297\igo8.exe

While you are there, click on the one that looks like a clock and set your time zone. Otherwise the GPS clock will be off.
