It's all personal preference, pure and simple.

Depends on your personal situatation. At one time in life I thought I would never have an automatic. Now I don't think I'll ever buy a clutch again. The auto was nice when I had shoulder surgery on my right arm this year.
When I bought my Yaris the auto was $800 extra.

I had to pickup and drive a buddy to the hospital once after he accidentally injured his shoulder. Strangely, none of his passengers at the time knew how to drive his car which had a MT. I strongly suggest to drive (or learn to drive) MT at least once since you'll never know when you'll need to in an emergency.
Also it broadens your options when searching in the used car market. I know a few people who are intimidated with manual tranny (dunno why) but there are people out there who have no interest in driving MT at all.
I've long switched to AT since we had our first child, as in a minivan/sedan combo, and now my Yaris.

It seems the Yaris clutch action is very akward and not so great. I wanted a stick but could'nt find any other then bare bones crank window stripped down cars. Got the auto and I'm ok with it. Frees up the right hand for food and drink!

To me it would depend where I commute. If it's mainly in the suburbs or areas where roads can be wide open, sure, go for a manual. If you live in the heart of the city where you pass through 19 stop signs just before you go sit in gridlock traffic on the expressway, I'd get an automatic.

I put 318,000 miles on a manual trans Echo that did not have cruise. My Yaris is also a manual, but it has cruise

You get a lot more zip in the Manual Yaris. I have driven the Auto and it just does not have the gearing to take better advantage of the little 1.5. Autos also have a lot more in them more gears, more friction and more weight. On a little car like the Yaris it does make a difference.
But that aside, like everyone says, its all personal preference. I love driving a manual even thought I get stuck in traffic sometimes. I just being in total control and feeling more connected to the car. Mine is also a bone stock 2007, no tachometer, manual everything, no cruise (yet). Didn't even have a stereo in it.

^^Tbh I have at times downshifted to the 1,2 and 3 gears in my auto sedan, and that did make the car funner to drive. I stopped doing that though, as from what I understand that can't be good for the longevity of the transmission.
So I guess in that respect, I can appreciate that this little 1.5 can be more beastly in a manual, but I just wouldn't be able to stand using my left foot on a clutch in bumper to bumper traffic, and in a city like Chicago with a bajillion stop signs and stoplights. Not worth it to me.

It is really a matter of personal preference as many of here mentioned. Go with what you really think it is best for your needs and how you will drive your car on an everyday basis. To me personally I always love driving manual tranny coz I get bored a lot driving automatics.

I prefer manuals myself but the only Yaris I've ever driven was a test drive about a month ago in a new 3 door hatch with the auto tranny.I will say though only a 4 speed it functioned a good bit better than the Ford Fiesta's sedan 5 speed auto I test drove yesterday with acceleration between the two to close to call. Not bad considering if the figures are right the Yaris has less hp/torque.

I had a sedan and now I have a lb - both manual. Drove an auto and didn't like it. But, I won't own a manual anything if someone gave it to me .... so it's a personal preference, I guess. And I was constantly in traffic - that has never once made a difference for me.

Manual FTW. I like having TOTAL control of the car. Plus better acceleration and better MPG from my experience. Driving in traffic will suck though, but on open and windy roads it's fun as hell!
Automatics are only a real necessity if the driver has some kind of physical disability IMO (i.e. a bad arm that can't shift while the other one holds the wheel, and/or a bad left foot that can't deal with a clutch pedal).
Just depends on your situation.

Bernie, I've previously owned cars that didn't have power-steering. It still wouldn't be a problem
