hankooks!! yay.

Im tempted to pick up some Toyo R1Rs in a 205/45-16 off a member of Cal Club. But, they're not the magic 195s :(

the pixie dust R1R are no more. The last ones sold from a vendor was back in Oct. I remember reading an article about that back in december. Then had a talk with a few people at Dixie National tour. They were saying the same thing.

most drivers in The Prosolo and National Tours don't run Hankooks this year because they dropped out of the contingency program. They are suppose to come back but later on this year..

So who is Travis Sackwar and Alvin Francisco running a White Yaris that placed 1st and 2nd in San Diego Champ Tour on the first day?

Alvin owns the car and Travis is his codrive.

Alvins not much of a forum guy, so I don't think he'll pop up here.

Car is pretty simply, hes running a 21mm rear bar, and fortune coilovers, and a muffler delete. He's also running Federal 595 RSR tires.

I don't know andres... The r-comp pixie lady must have sprinkled her dust on these instead of the R1R tires on accedent. I am tempted to get these as well. $65 a tire is pretty damn cheap to test.

xnamerxx
04-07-2014, 12:44 PM
No one in STF at SD was running the older tires.

The 2 was on Dunlops
The Yaris on Federals
The Mini on Rivals

For that site Federals at least on paper look like the best choice. If I had to pick a tire though, I would say new Toyos would probably be best.

Congrats to Travis and Alvin for the 1-2 finish in STF :)

Congrats indeed.

I was a bit surprised to see Don Green in STF. Co drive with J. Austen, it appears. Don is a pretty decent driver who's had very good results in Stock with the Mini (not sure if it was Austen's or not) over the years.

But cool deal with Travis / Alvin representing the Yaris in STF!

I'm tempted to visit the Pro Solo coming up!!

Like I like Rice said, they're cheap. I have them on my CRX, and have done some autoX as well as a couple of track days. I like them just fine. For the price, I LOVE them.

Somebody at my skill level (bottom of the STC class) might be better off saving money with these, while improving my skill, before stepping up to the more expensive tires.

The other side of that coin, is to get what I know works, and I already have a benchmark (the other STC guys in my class) and can continue to improve my driving. With the R1Rs, on my Civic, I know my car has alot more than I can give it (my co-drive took 3rd in a Pro-Solo).

Day 1 of the ProSolo is starting very excited to be teaching against some fierce competition.

Bad news though the tckline mini sounds like it has a rod knock I really hope I'm wrong about that.

Good job. That blue mini is joe Austin's.

You guys got 8 runs total... lucky

Well finished 6th out of 8 with a 1.5s spread between 1 and 7. If I didnt have a two .95s reaction times I would be going to the challenge. With the reaction time taken into account I had the fastest left side time.

Ideally the best car is Yaris sedan.

Its several inches shorter in height so the CG is lower and the frontal area is lower, its 2 inches longer and it weights a few lbs less. You also have the smaller front swaybar so inside spin isn't as much of a problem.

Based on recent results I still think there is a lot to get from the Yaris which in STF prep version my get better power/weight ratio than my Mazda2, enough to compete with the powerful newcomers like the 2.3 Focus and pf course Mazda 3

Do you have documented data on those numbers, like weight and stuff between sedan and hatch ?

Thanks

Andres

xnamerxx
06-14-2014, 03:58 PM
Most of the numbers are available online like weight and wheelbase and height etc but I don't have any exact numbers.

Personally I would go with a Scion XD if you could get the weight down to the 2400lb range which I don't know if thats possible. Motor is good for well over 140hp on a Mustang Dyno, and it uses the same chassis as the Yaris with the lower roofline of the sedan, plus is has awesome gearing.

Thanks, found them, who has the most powerfull STF legal Yaris? How did he achieved it?
Headers, cai , pulleys, tuning?, header back?
I haven't seen dynos higher than 112 hp or so..

Well then its straight up all driver then.

I know joe austin has everything that can possibly be done to his mini to make it STF legal, including a reflash on his ecu, which if i can recall correctly, it was somewhere in the 140-150 hp range when I talked to him, which was back in March.

So for Travis Sackwar to come only .100 from Joe at the June 13th national event is saying something. Joe can drive, he just has a hard time getting clean runs.

Power means almost nothing for most STF cars. Last I spoke with Alvin, he was doing some more suspension tuning on the car and upped the spring rate but I'm not sure how that panned out since I haven't been to an event in a few months.

There is no question Travis is a better driver than Joe, he runs a car on street tires that isn't competitive and he cleans up in DSP.

Here is a vid of Sundays course.

Definitely a great driver, car seems really strong but a little pushy, sounds amazing and great skills down shifting. Is there a way to change the Rev limiter, that would change the car big time.

How can I contact those guys?

Yup indeed. I couldn't believe it, so I asked to look under the hood. Stock down to the stock air box! He might have had an exhaust muffler, but can't recall for sure.

As Namer pointed out, last I checked with him, he was looking at stiffing up the springs.

Yes - he and his co driver are both good drivers. When I ran against them, they killed me by like 4 seconds. I doubt that's attributed to car set up!

Video is from Tyler Colgetts STF Fit.

As far as the rev limiter, your best bet is probably to change the crystals in the ECU otherwise you'll need an aftermarket ECU or something like that.

Couldn't tell you how to get in touch with them, I only talk to them at events.

Found one of Alvins Videos from Crows Landing

quick question. Got a friend who is going on a track day and has a turbo. Been searching, but can't find anything about disabling the speed limiter.

Anyone got any suggestions about this or solutions?

xnamerxx

Pull the speedo plug. Its what I have to do to get around it on the BS car, just make sure you don't pull the battery otherwise the ecu won't go into learning mode.

So you go on track not knowing how fast...other than GPS? Just wondering. I don't pay much attention to the speedo anyway. Too busy paying attention to the other racers. Lol

Basically. The speedo is way off and I can't see the gauge cluster because of the knee bar, so the only gauge I pay attention to is the tach.

Usually its right around 105 on the GPS. Not sure of the track you're gonna be on so it may be an issue it might not. At the slower tracks like Big Willow or Streets of Willow its not really an issue, at faster tracks like Buttonwillow or AAA Speedway its a bit more of a problem.

Well another weekend another race, got 3rd place about a second behind Travis and a little under half a second behind Alvin. Nothing really to complain about, aside from the sharp right at the start made it hard to put power down, but other than that the car was tight and felt fantastic.

Had Jason@sportscar hope in and give my GF a quick instruction run. Thought it would be cool to do a side by side shot from his run to my fast run.

My run was a 58.7 and Jasons run was a 59.6. I'm sure he would have put quite a bit of time on me if he was more familiar with the car.

Well. Dixie Nationals is coming up in less than 2 weeks. I feel like I have become a much better driver in the past year. After going to many conventions and be able to participate in the Evolution Driver school a month ago, I feel my driver mod has increased.

Nothing has really changed much except tires. I got a chance to talk to Andy Holis at the MSX Expo/SCCA conference a few weeks ago. During a Tire panel with BFgoodrich and Hoosier Reps as the speakers. I was asking questions the pros/cons between going with a 225 and a 205 tire on either a 7" rim or 7.5" rim. They wanted to talk to me after the panel but they got swamped with other people, so I started out the door. Then Andy stopped me and we started talking.
Basically he said you loose tire stiffness when you pinch a tire on the rim with street tires. You want lateral side wall but a slight stretch is recommended. He suggest to go with a 205 on my 7.5" rim. So I did.
Purchased 4 205/50/15 BFGoodrich Rivals. I have yet to really try them out in the dry. Our last event was all wet so was hard to dial in. But I was able to get 1st in Pax again, and I feel I wasn't giving it 100%. So thats good.

So far only 4 STF drivers.. I have signed up for contengencies for BFG and Hawk, but need 5 starters in order to get awards. Hopefully 1 more will sign up..

Where you at Andres?

Good luck at Dixie, I think i've raced with you at a roebling rd event a year or so back. Drove up from Orlando in my STi.

What Andy said matches what i've felt when driving cars with pinched tires, plus with the yaris being a momentum car the lighter 205s will help as well.

Keep us posted how you do at Dixie.

@Andres
The difference was last year I had the OEM mid pipe, this year I upgraded to the Nitto midpipe, cut off one of the resenators and welded a cat in OEM location.
Also, last year i was running 225 hankooks on a 7" rim, this year I went with 205 Rivals on a 7.5" rim..

But I think the biggest difference was the driver mod... I have improved a lot in 2014 and really understanding the mental prep work that is required to find the best lines and memorizing the course. After each walk through, I would close my eyes and run the course in my head. If there was a spot in my memory that I was unsure of, I would walk the course again. I would repeat this until I can drive the course in my head every time.

Also, the GoPro helped a lot. Being able to view my runs after ward and seeing where I needed to get close to a cone, brake later, or get on the throttle more was what I needed.

@Bond
Thanks for listening. I haven't had a rush like that in a long time. My hands were still shaking in grid afterwards. My last run, I gave it everything I had and after viewing it on my gopro, I think there was still maybe .100 in a spot or 2. I was nailing every turn.

I will post up a decent video later on for all to see.

Thinking of doing more autocrosses this year than I usually do (once or twice a year) so buying a good set of tires. I've got a spare set of wheels- 15X7 RPF1s. Looking at 195/50 Hankooks or 205/50 Rivals, Dunlops even Bridgestones. Would appreciate any feedback on these. Thanks.

CrankyOldMan
03-18-2015, 08:55 AM
I ran 205/50 Rivals on 15x7's the last 2 seasons. I don't have anything to compare them against, but they seemed to work well. I found that I had to keep the fronts near max pressure (52 psi) to keep them from rolling under, but it could also be that I'm over driving the corners and using tire pressure to fight understeer.

I'm leaning towards the Proxes R1Rs in the magic 195/50R15 size, but haven't decided for sure. The AutoX season starts a little later up here, so I've still got some time.

ilikerice
03-18-2015, 09:46 AM
I am running 205 on 7.5" rim, my fronts are at 34psi and probably can drop the pressure just a bit more. I am not rolling on my tires. Cranky, maybe you should try a 195 tire on the 7" rim to give it a bit more stretch.

I only have experience with RS3 and Rivals. I feel the RS3 is more grippy in long sweepers but the Rivals respond much better in slaloms. After talking to some guys at nationals. In the end, it all boils down to driver preference. Unfortunatly in order to get the right tire for your driving technique, its a matter of "trial and error" for each tire. I can explain how each tire works in difference circumstances, but until you actually get in those situations, its all the same.

Put it this way. Everyone in my class at nationals was driving Dunlops and Hankooks, I was the only one on BFGoodrich. I felt that I was at a disadvantage but I ended up taking 1st place. I feel tires just boils down to driver capabilities.

BTW Cranky, R1R doesnt have the pixy dust in them anymore unfortuantly from what people are saying

CrankyOldMan
03-18-2015, 12:17 PM
Well crap. My only real complaint about the Rivals was the tread overlap separation. I'm going back through my list of wheels and I don't think I have a 7.5--only 5.5, 6 and 6.5. The Rivals don't come in 195, so maybe something else is in order?

I think the only "pixie dust" was that the tread compound was sticky all the way to the cords, so you could shave them and still have the equivalent of fresh compound. I don't shave them, but I will run them to the cords before tossing them.

The other consideration for me is that I'm firmly entrenched in SMF, so sky's the limit on treadwear. Of course nobody makes R-comps in 195, but I can dream, right?

ilikerice
03-18-2015, 12:33 PM
Give it time. There was much frustration with tire choices before the National tour and many guys were holding out til late april when new tires and sizes will be available.

Another thing I learned about tires that will either help you or make you more frustrated. It is better to have a slightly stretched street tire on a rim to help with tire response.
NOW, this is the opposite for R-comp Tires though. R-comps have much stiffer side walls and they say it is better to pinch a tire on a rim for the max amount of grip. Next time if you get a chance to look at some National event pictures, look at the tires. You will notice that R-Comps are pinched and street tires are slightly stretched.

So I would go with a 225 R-comp if you end up going that route.

CrankyOldMan
03-18-2015, 01:53 PM
Correction--I've got a set of 15x7s, but the cost of R-comps is about double my tire budget. I'm not going to be running in national events, so a set of 140-200 treadwear is fine for my purposes.

Thanks for all your shared wisdom!

I don't blame ya.. Rcomps are so expensive. And I can't justify R-comps with out a limited slip diff. Im already getting inside wheel spin on street tires and barely stock motor.

Even with the LSD, I get lots of inside wheel spin with my winter tires. That could be part of the nature of a helical diff, or the 130-ish whp I'm pushing out. Hopefully a new set of summer tires will fix the wheel spin on my daily commute.

The one AutoX event I did last fall on my nearly-dead Rivals still had inside wheel spin on sharp cornering, but sweepers would hook just fine and pull hard through the apex. I've got new Tokico Reds and a fresh set of MI springs this year, so that may allow more control of tire contact in the corners.

Hmm. interesting, thanks for the info on the Helical diff experience.

I agree with you about where the wheel spin is happening. I noticed in my videos that that is where most of my wheel spin is coming from.

I just got all my video's on one computer now and I started trimming them up. I just gotta edit them now. I will have it up hopefully either tonight or tomorrow.

So I been looking for new suspension and a friend linked this to me... I may have to invest in this...

When I first saw it and scrolled down to the list for makes and models, I thought, great, something else that everyone else gets except Yaris. I went ahead and looked for Toyota's list expecting to see Supra and GT86 of course... Damn, I was soo wrong

Are remote reservoir suspension setups allowed in STF? I can't put my finger on the specific rule, but I seem to recall a prohibition on them for vehicles that don't come from the factory with them.

No music this time, figured some of the autocross guys wanted to hear the tires and throttle control. Any questions and explanations requested are welcome. Feel free to judge also.

Finally ordered my matching gauges. I need the oil filter sandwich adapter for my oil pressure sensor.
2 part questions. Is there a better/easier spot to get an oil pressure sensor?

If I do get that sandwich adapter, which one?
-3/4 UNF-16 - Fits Mazda with spin on conversion, some Nissans, VW, Ford, BMW, Scion, SRT-4, SR20, Toyota & Jeep
-3/4 UNF-16-Long Shaft- Fits Toyota Celica, Scion Tc, & MR2

Thanks in advanced.

Quick ?

The Coolant sensor adaptor, should I do the lower or upper radiator hose? I remember someone posting about it somewhere where they suggested...

Coolant going into the block would have a cooler reading.. but would you want to know the coolant temp before or after the coolant has passed through the block?

In the end I guess it wouldn't matter.

BondXII
04-14-2015, 06:49 PM
Your normal reading is incoming temperature. This will let you know that the incoming water is in the 190 range. You could do either side, but if you put it on the out going side to the radiator, you would have to know what the normal temperature is pre-radiator. In reality, it doesn't matter where you put it...as long as you know what the temperature is supposed to be in the area you install it. But when you look at the OEM sensor, it's going into the motor and not coming out.

xnamerxx

ferrofluid is legal as long as the car came with adjustable shocks as OEM.

As it sits there isn't really a lot of options for aftermarket MR shocks and I wouldn't go with any of them if the controller is not setup correctly for the vehicle.

Need to check with the gauge company D. The factory output may not be the same for the gauge that you bought. Hate for you to tap that signal wire just to find out that your reading 89 degrees when it's actually 195. Lol

Just wanted to update my new tire info and give some feedback. I went with 195/50R15 Z2 star specs on the 15x7s and 195/55R15 DZ102s on the 15x6.5s. The 102s ride nicely and hold up well in the corners. The Z2s held up well at reasonable pressures and behaved themselves under heavy cornering. It's gonna take a while to re-learn how to drive it, but I have high hopes.

*edit*

I also have an update on the LSD: having a proper alignment makes a world of difference with inside wheel spin. Even with my near-bald snow tires, I was able to gain huge amounts of traction coming out of a corner on my daily commute. I've finally got my summer tires on, so I'll give them a good flogging today on the way to/from work to make sure that's still the case.

I am confused by your description... Is it only fun when you win, or when you think you are competitive because no fast guys showed up? Natl events are the ONLY way to measure where you stand.

How did them wiping the floor with you make your driving experience any less fun? It should have only had an impact on your fun level if you were concerned with the results.

Harnish is fast, but he has the wrong car for HS, just as you do.

I've even thought the same thing myself. Playing under dog is an interesting position. Being a uncompetitive unprepared car in the lowest class makes things very interesting sometimes. I've come to expect that I will be at least mildly competitive since I consider myself to be mildly seasoned with almost 40 events under my belt. It kinda takes the fun away when I don't even stand a chance of winning. I still had fun, yes, but did I have as much fun as I do at a local event? No

I asked the driver of the ST fiesta what he thought about his car being in hs and he told me this

I bought this car because I was driving a Porsche 911 gt-something and I wanted a car that was class competitive in street class. I bought this car when it was in GS knowing it was competitive in that class. When they moved it to HS in 2015 I was pleasantly surprised

I asked him if we switched cars would the outcome be the same? Would the fiesta win by 3~ seconds?

He said in your car I don't stand a chance.

We both had a similar amount of seat time. About 1.5 seasons

40 events, 1.5 seasons... Still wet behind the ears, you still dont know what you dont know. Harnish would have likely been as fast in your car as the CRX.

Jason has valid points.. even if you did autocross once a month, thats still only little over 3 years. I been doing this for 8 years now and I am still learning things. I was able to place 1st place at Dixie National event back in March, but by the skin of my teeth. I love national events just for the fact i get to see where my skills have taken me.

Try going to STF with just some Good coil overs and tires... you will see where you stand then. STF is still a cheap class once you get past the the coil overs

Ben_

Very true about my skills. I didn't even have a chance against the fiesta and I don't think I'll be doing any out of town national events. I do well at the local events and enjoy the competition factor which I didn't see at the national event. I wasn't the only one who felt this way. I also like the relaxed feel of local events. I'm told we have one of the most laid back chapters around the west and I love that

I had less fun at nationals because things were very serious. I love going to local events and just having fun with some healthy competition. I have met a lot of good friends and that is half the reason I go to events so often.

I guess National events in the South East are a bit more friendly. We usually try to get a group of us from our region to hit up a National tour or Match tour. We really try to push each other and help out with tips as much as we can. I probably talked to every person in STF class and became good friends and still keep in touch via facebook stilll. We even swap video's to compare.

You can't go to a national event not knowing anyone and just sit in your car after your run and expect people to flock to you. I see it all the time and those guys are usually the grumpy cats. You gotta talk to people, ask them what they are having difficulty with and share your experience about the course. Everyone wants to win, no doubt, esp when you got contengicies on the line, haha.

I also like to watch people prepare themselves before. It's intereting to see real competitive drivers get in themselves metally prepared. You can see it in people's eyes when they look out of a course and see that try to memorize every cone there.

Puts a smile on my face knowing we are all there for the same reason and there can only be 1 winner.

Need that fixed.. Will be running Rival S next year also. I am trying to sell my Konig Candy rims to get my hands on some RPF1's.. Will push them a bit harder after my last event this year in Nov.

You still running your Mazda2? In STF?

Plans for 2016 is to mod my new Honda Civic Dx 95. Should be interesting. Took it out for the first time this weekend and found out the struts are pretty blown so I have a starting point now

HEY ANDRES!

You still running your Mazda2? In STF?

I do, I went yo Nats , I knew I was not going to win with the new Hondas overdogs, but I drove like sh.. not enough seat time like 2014, and I had an ABS failure as ll.
I learned though that if we don't get close to 140 hp to the wheels is a lost case with the newcomers.
So i am geting to changes on the car, realistically I can get 135-137 to the wheels, but also need to loose some weight, I can get down to 2120, no less.

As of today I have 127hp to the wheels, but not enough torque, so I am in the process of getting a new tune with Orange Virus Tuning, maybe 6-7 more HP and new headers 4-2-1 config for torque.

And yes I will go to Dixie, although I am back in Minnesota ;)

Nice... Good info to know. I will have to throw mine on a dyno maybe sometime next year. I have a CamCom II but it isn't tuned yet. I can't find anyone near me I really trust...

This is probably going to be the last year of the yaris.. I just acquired a 240sx S14 shell and will be collecting parts for it this year.

I will be going to Dixie Championship Tour next month for SCCA Autocross. If I manage a podium position (1st, 2nd, 3rd), I will go to the National Championship at Lincoln, NE in September. If I can get a podium position there, I will continue with the Yaris in STF.

If I lose at Dixie or National, whichever comes first, I will revert the yaris back to stock and start putting my money into the S14 in SM class and just have fun with it.

I love my yaris, and it is fun, but in the back of my mind, I have always just looked at it with a sad thought... it just doesn't have that fast car look... Sits too high, headlights are too large, the wheels are too small for its body... Yes, all these things can change with some money but it will take away from the performance of the car and competitiveness.

With that said, I will still keep it but will only be my work commute car. I will still be around to give advice and poke fun at others.

I'm doing exactly the same as you. Bought a Honda eg8 and now have more money in parts than the $1300 purchase price. First event this season is tomorrow I'll see how she runs.

The Yaris never left stock so I daily it and use it as a parts car lol. It's 10/10 good at that job. With good tires the limit of grip is much higher than legal speeds limit. Definitely needs more power though

Reading that and having flashbacks of when I used to go often, that put a smle on my face.

I've been out of it for far too long. Hoping to run some events this year.

New proposal for the Hot Hatches Class. Making an STH class with all 4 seat boosted cars 2.5L or less in one class.. all the other STF cars moving to STS or STX... There goes the the competition for the Yaris in ST... At least the LSD would be legal... haha

What are your opinions?
