I had my 60k checkup at Toyota today, and my service tech told me that I needed my "transmission pan gasket" replaced (and that it would cost $280!).

I'm pretty sure I found the part, http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/sku/OES_Genuine/Automatic_Transmission_Pan_Gasket/W0133-1746368.html, only costs $15. But I haven't been able to find DIY instructions on how to replace it.

Any suggestions?

Is is actually leaking?

If so, it is quite simple to replace. You will just need to pull the drain plug (10mm Allen wrench) and then remove all of the mounting screws. Clean the magnets while you have the pan off and you can optionally change the filter while you have the pan off. Scrape off any remaining bits of the old gasket and mount the new pan. Refill the transmission with Toyota WS ATF.

You can grab the service manual for the automatic transmission via the Micro Image forum, for detailed instructions:

Thanks for all the info. Unfortunately it looks like I'll have to jack my car up to do the repair, and I don't have the tools to do so (I live in the city and park on the street).
I think alternatively I'll just buy the OEM parts online and ask my mechanic to do the work. Should be cheaper than the dealership. Thanks.
