View Full Version : New Yaris owner! A few questions...

I just bought an 08 Yaris, preferred package it looks like, 60/40 rear seats, 5 speed, 97k miles. A few questions...

Rear seat - when folding that down, the "60" part doesn't go lay down flat. Is that normal?

Aux input doesn't work - the cd/aux button doesn't even prompt a response

I bought this car to be my daily and my courier car. My second job requires me to drive around 1700 miles a week, and I couldn't swing a prius so I bought this lol.

At this mileage, what kind of maintenance should be done?

Any known issues to look out for?

Best weight oil?

Eventually I'd like some alloy wheels with new tires, are oem options available for that?

Thanks for all the help!

For the fold flat to do so, you have to first slide the two sections forward with the slider lever.

The AUX button won't work unless a cable is plugged into the AUX jack. If it still doesn't do anything with a cable plugged in, pop the plastic area that the jack is mounted to and see if the cable is unplugged from the back of the jack.

At 97K, you might want to change the gear oil, do the belt if it hasn't been done, fresh coolant if that hasn't been done, plugs, and clean the MAF sensor and throttle body. You should get many times your current mileage out of it without a problem.

Make sure there is a cabin air filter installed behind the glove box to prevent the AC from getting stinky (a common problem).

And, with 3000 miles before 100K, check the control arm bolts (of which there was a 100K mile warranty extension because of). www.yarisworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=27658

Oil: 5W30

Wheels and tires - OEM alloys are a bit heavy and expensive. Check out Micro Image for good deals on reasonable aftermarket wheels.

Got the seats folded down, thanks man!

Ordered an aux adapter from ebay, I think the unit is defected so best just to cut it out.

Ordered a cabin air filter, while driving it smells kind of "enginey" lol if that makes sense, could that be the cause?

The smelly AC issue tends to be more of a musty or swampy smell. An enginey smell may indicate an exhaust leak or some oil that dripped or leaked and is cooking off.

Just wanted to update my ownership experience.

I bought and sold a couple Yari and landed with my long haul car in August of 2014. 2011 Hatch, power everything, keyless, cruise, manual, got it with 70k miles. As of today I'm at 207k. I'm going to join the ranks of high mileage Yaris bros. Next oil change will include a Blackstone Labs oil analysis to gauge engine health.

I've had an issue with flat tires on my long journeys, so next week I will begin to carry a full size spare and floor jack at all times. Also had a rotor warping issue, so stoptech rotors were installed and have fixed that.

Aside from that little stuff, this little car has been taking the 2000 miles a week with stride.

My other vehicles currently, are a 2015 GMC Sierra, and 2013 Acura ILX 6 speed.

Update,

My 2011 has needed nothing more than common maintenance. 277k and going up everyday,

I'm currently closing the deal on a 2012 5speed SE with 50k to slowly start taking over. I want to take is car to 500k+ but I want to have another one waiting in case issues pop up.

Still getting 37mpg, I did a Scion XD seat that seats, bunch of LED's, expensive front rotors, and everything else is stock and doing great.

On my way home with my latest purchase. 2012 SE, 5 speed, pretty loaded, 51k, got it for a little under $7k.

Super happy with it! Should be a good backup for my main Yar going for big miles

maintenance valve clearance check at 60k.

what is this "maintenance valve clearance" stuff?
I was under the impression that this has a shim and bucket set up, so "maintenance" does not exist...

am I mistaken?

Check your owners manual. Theres a requirement to check the clearances at 60,000 miles. At least there is on my 09. At some point they might eliminate the check because

In actual operation this check is almost never done and its rare to hear about a problem. But as the valves wear the clearance will become less and if it gets small enough the exhaust valves will burn. Sometimes the clearance gets bigger which isnt as bad but will make the engine noisier.

I don't have an owners manual. if valves "wear" you would loose clearance at cam/bucket resulting in rattles and reduced performance. it could burn the valve, but only if it were to wear enough that the spring lost tension. I don't know how it can decrease clearance. I guess if the spring was pulling the valve into the head, but then you have other problems.

I just don't understand why an inspection when the repair is thousands of dollars... it's probably cheaper to just replace the engine....

Honestly. I just got on a kick about needing a backup Yaris due to my main car approaching 300k (my plan is to take this car to 500k+), but that will require repairs at times, and when that happens, I'll need something.

So I hit Autotrader, searched 2012+ manual transmission only, and this one was one of 12 or so in 500 miles. It was originally listed for $7900, I talked to the dealer, planned to go up there that Saturday, but slept in instead. I looked again the next week, and the price was reduced to $6900, so I called and put down $1,000 and picked it up Saturday. I was expecting a rough car, and instead got a super nice, almost new appearing Yaris. New tires, perfect interior, etc. Now with the mods it's a really nice car.

Truly just lucked out.

Wow, congrats, that's great!

I actually have nationwide MT 2012-14 Autotrader and Cars.com searches in my favorites and check them weekly or so. Manual SEs are super rare, much less for that great a deal. And yeah, they do look so much better than the older ones.

Haha money isn't what keeps me in a Yaris. They are just the most practical car for my purposes. I have a buyer lined up for the red car, I'll keep driving the silver one as long as it'll go. I'm not exactly sure what will be next for a backup car, CT200H, Prius, Prius C, or I may just buy a new Mustang GT so I can have a fun car again.

But I'll still spend 2,000 miles a week in my old trusty Yaris.

My Camry is a 2010 LE 2.5L with only 26K miles... and in showroom condition. It's actually my 5th Camry. I sold my 2005 Camry in March 2010 and bought the 2010 a few days later; it was a certified used with about 2000 miles. I like the body style of this generation best; every line of the sheet-metal design just seems to make sense. I love this car and really enjoy driving it a couple of times a week. I consider the Yaris my sport car and the Camry my luxury car.

Yes, I know what you mean.

Nevertheless, the Yaris is a really fun and nimble little car. I think my '07 was a bit more raucous and perhaps somewhat more sport-car like, and the '14 is more "refined" with less fun factor... but I still love it.

CincyC6

Yeah sports car is a tough way to talk about a Yaris. I do enjoy driving them, but sports car talk I reserve for rowdy and reckless V8 rwd stuff. I'm hoping to purchase a 5.0 Mustang once a few things sell.

tarkus

Nobody's saying the Yaris is a muscle car :-) But due to its light weight, it only takes a few small tweaks to make it a great zippy little sports car. This is honestly the most fun vehicle I've had since my BMW Z1.

Sent from my LG G2 with CM13 using Tapatalk

why?
01-07-2017, 07:34 AM
Add a good suspension and the Yaris really can shine. There is a reason they are still autocrossed and raced.

ern-diz
01-08-2017, 06:31 PM
Yeah, I myself wouldn't make V8 engine a prerequisite for the title of sports car, but when I think sports car, I think something that was designed with performing on the road as one of it's primary objectives. The top end would be something like a Ferrari. Middle of the road would be something like the original NSX. Rounding out the bottom (again, just my thinking) would be something like an S2000, or Miata.

I love my Yaris for more than a few reasons, but it's a sub compact econo-egg on it's best day lol. I know the mighty Jason@ and Armstrong Racing have done some incredible things with the platform, but I still couldn't think of these cars as sports cars.

Adjusted some of my driving habits and managed to squeeze 39.3mpg out of my last tank. Trying to drag it up to 40, pretty happy with that considering the 338k miles

Just wondering why you sold your 2012 se?

So, the main reason was I felt like it was too much money tied up in a backup car that will just depreciate.

But the big thing, is it felt worse at everything. Worse turn radius, gas mileage, slower, the seats were uncomfortable on long drives, I missed having the dome light overhead, also I watch an iPad while driving, and put it behind the steering wheel. The '12 hadn't no place for it. It was also bumpier

It had much better curb appeal and the build qualify felt a touch better, but overall those things were enough to not enjoy driving it.

That is cool. Thanks for the explanation. My 07 felt way inferior to my 12. I honestly wouldn't drive a non SE myself, unless it was a gazoo.

The '11's and older have a economy car/basic junk vibe to them, but I've gotten accustomed to that lol

Quick update; big upgrade and maintenance week.

Got a deal on a set of Michelin Defenders and got them mounted on the OE scion wheels today. Next up for the red car is serpentine belt, exhaust leak fix, and a detail.

My silver cars brakes started grinding, so this weekend the stoptechs go on.

My black car is pretty much set, I'll be trading wheels between this and the red one, due to my disdain for aftermarket wheels.

Honestly it didn't lol. I was for sure watching (more so listening) to a podcast while it happened, I saw her pull out in front of me, but nothing I could do. It was raining, she was cited, multiple witnesses saw it.

Wreck happened at 9pm last night, looked at a replacement at 1am, brought it home this morning.

I was very impressed by the structural soundness. The front end is ripped up, but doors are still in place, everything seems straight.

I really love this silver car. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, it was leaking oil on the flat bed, so it seems as though something important is hurt lol. I'm going to dig in and see the odds of a budget rebuild after buying back from insurance. Even if I just use awful body panels, or find a donor car. Not sure, I'm not ready to say goodbye lol

ouch, glad that you're ok...I won't get started on drivers with their heads up their ass pulling out in front of ppl. At least you were able to get a replacement super fast, hopefully it treats you just as well.

The damage to your silver Yaris doesn't seem to catastrophic from the one pic you posted. However, the oil leak you mentioned is likely from the crash bar being smashed into the timing cover. If that's the case then a relatively straight forward fix might not be so if you'll need to look at the block/timing cover to see if it's cracked.

Whenever someone asks me if they should buy a car, I tell them to try to find a blown up one on Craigslist. I thought about a Honda Fit, HHR, Matrix, cars like that before. I found a bunch of hurt ones and decided to stick with Yars.

I almost got ahold of one with a blown headgasket, but slept through the auction. That was the only one I've ever came across with engine troubles.

A little update...

Main car has around 160k miles on it now. I just bought new wheels and tires for it, but getting the last miles out of the current setup, that has around 100k on them. I’ll shortly be sending this car to my friends shop for a yearly maintenance and inspection. It’s been trouble free thus far, very happy with it.

As of now, I still have my black car, I’ve put around 8k miles on it thus far, and currently it’s in the shop for exhaust fix, belt fix, and a new tire. It’s currently for sale, as a new backup car was purchased.

I also ended up getting back into a truck, since my house purchase is complete

Ended up selling my black Yaris, and replaced it with something different.

I went with a 6 speed Scion IM. Got it for $9400, 77k miles.

Still have the red car, sitting at 262k miles and perfect.
