Anybody heard of this before? This is certainly news to me:
That "new car smell" can be hazardous to your health, The Ecology Center, a Berkeley, Calif., environmental group said. The Ecology Center said toxic chemicals such as bromine, chlorine and lead found in cars' interiors give off harmful fumes for three years, the Chicago Tribune reported.
http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/55237.html
The site HealthyCar.org rates the Yaris a 3.4 / 5.0 score (http://www.healthycar.org/vehicle.details.php?getrecno=196), which is apparently quite high. And I thought the new car smell was something that you'd like to keep in your car!
Here are a couple of more links for those interested in learning more about this health issue:

Shocking that Berkeley would have something bad to say about cars.

Its amazing how people survived before, in such a toxic world. Now that the government knows about the horrible new car smell, from 2009 and on, new cars will smell like all natural dog shyte.
who cares? there are compounds in the air that are more toxic...

It is the most toxic substance known to man. That's why when I get my new Yaris in a few days, I'll just have to use my nose to suck it out of the car. Just to keep the family safe of course.

Toxic? Now they say a can of soda (or pop) a day can cause heart disease. You can eat healthy, workout to be healthy and live the good life. The bus with the cancer causing diesel coming the other way will kill ya.
No More new car smell...6721

Oh, yeah, but that HAS to be the best way to go!
It's funny how the "new car smell" has changed over the years. When I was a kid, the new car smell had to do with new wood (hardwood dash), real leather, wool carpets, even horsehair (seats and insulation). That is where the fascination with the "new car smell" first became attractive, but it sure ain't like that now.
I built a wood car (on a Toyota chassis, btw), and it smelled just fine; a few people even remarked on that feature...

After a few bowls of my killer chili, I’ll inaugurate the car by passing gas. That usually neutralizes the smell of a new car.

The symptoms are from having just forked out over $13k of hard-earned cash or facing monthly payments for the rest of your life; the "new car smell" is merely coincidental and contaminates this research... BTW, I invested $2 in a can-o-scent... Problem solved!
Exactly the reason why my yaris slept with her windows cracked down a bit for like her first 6 weeks of life with me.

Is there a light in the hatch area (~`09) ? with my 2000 Civic I left the hatch open (garaged, no light) at night to get rid of the out gassing, smells good to me but so does cigarette smoke

I miss the new car smell, even though it stuck with me for 4 months:frown:
Besides, what's so toxic about it? It fades away sooner or later
Oh yeah farting will bring it back. At least it can be renewed LOL

Oh yeah farting will bring it back. At least it can be renewed LOL too many farts could weaken the seat fabrics over time thus a hole would from  . How'd yeh like to explain that to the service manager for drivers seat replacement under the 3 yr. / 36,000 miles bumper to bumper warranty  . .

Didn't say I was gonna do it in my Y
BTW, just had a bunch of Indian food at my parents house "to keep with the tradition". Can we go for a drive in yours "to help it digest"?:biggrin:
sure , why not , we put towels on the seats so we don't burn holes in them from :smoking: and tooting :moon: accidents after eating fast foods . We don't roll down windows for either act , so you may want to bring a breathing apparatus .
that's the advantage of owning a 2 door hatch . If the occupants in the back p*ss yeh off you can get even by cutting the wind and they have no windows to roll down and or doors to exit . Have to go through you  . So , I highly suggest a 2 door Liftback for those with disfunctional ( annoying  ) families and friends .

You forgot to mention the benefits of the cramped interior space. The woft hits everyone inside very quickly

Everything's toxic and causes cancer. Who cares anymore.
Tomorrow, we'll find out that spring water is toxic.
Anyway, people have been sitting in that new car smell for over 100 years and life spans continue to increase.
A weird thread indeed haha.
