View Full Version : Hoping for a Yellow Jolt

Hi everyone! First post here. I don't have a Yaris yet, but I'm looking for one. A yellow one.
I know it could take a while if I really hold out for yellow. From my research, it was only available in '09 and '10, and I'm only interested in a stick-shift model. According to nationwide listings on Cars.com, the chances that any given 2nd Gen Yaris for sale is a manual Yellow Jolt is 0.095%. I saw one for sale in Tuscon last year, but I wasn't ready for a new car then. There are none for sale currently in the whole country that I can find, and I've searched nearly every Craigslist within a thousand miles.
So, if anyone sees one (or has one) for sale, let me know. I may settle for a blue one eventually, as long as it also has a 60/40 rear seat. I'm not buying a car without color (grey, white, black, no thanks). I like red too, but my current car is red. And the car I had before that was red. And the family van growing up was red. Time for something different.
I love small, simple, efficient cars, and I don't see any other recent cars that beat the Yaris on that front except maybe the Mirage, but I can't get over how ugly they are. The Yaris looks pretty spiffy to me. I hope I can join the club someday.

Good luck with the search. Hopefully a banan--err--yellow one will come your way
Had to give you a hard time for that black is not a color crack. Black is beautiful!
Kidding aside, I hope you find what you're looking for. Great little cars, in any finish.

Shame you insist on manual since I see an automatic available in Avondale. Waiting for a manual is going to be like catching a unicorn.

Black is beautiful... but it's still not a color. I love seeing black cars at shows and auctions, and your car looks awesome, too. When it's perfect, it looks amazing. I know how much work it takes to keep it that way, though. I wouldn't want to own a black car here in Phoenix, with all the dust and the 110°+ weather. SoCal can't be much easier. You must be pretty dedicated.
White and gray/silver are just too common for me. I like to be able to find my car in the parking lot.
There is one yellow for sale right now in Sacramento, and it even has 60/40 seats, but it's an automatic. :frown:
There's a curbstoner right near where I live with a manual blue 2012 for sale, but I don't like the 2012 style as much, and, you know, curbstoners...

There's actually plenty of manual Yarii on the market. Something like 15% of them are stick shift. It's only a matter of time until the right color appears. I just hope it's not 1,000 miles away.

Thank you and yes, I've had several parts resprayed and even still, up close in heavy sun you can see some of the years on her. All in all though, I try to keep her looking crispy.
It's a lot easier than parting with $500+ a month for something new.

"Crispy" is a word I'd use to describe my current car's paint job, but not in a good way! I don't think it had ever seen shade before I bought it. Most of the clear is gone on the hood, and the roof has been scorched all the way down to the primer.

I bought it as a beater to learn more about working on cars. There's been lots of learning, alright, and it's actually been a reliable car. It's gotten me to Oregon and back three times, and I always take the back roads, using a different route each time. I'm about ready for something newer, though.
Even a base Yaris has all kinds of luxury features my car didn't have when it was new, like a tilting steering wheel, adjustable headrests, power steering, folding mirrors, a radio, hubcaps, air conditioning, and a powerful 4-cylinder engine to top it all off.
Someone did add air conditioning to my car before I bought it, at least. :bonk:

I've had two yellow vehicles since 1999 but in a more vibrant shade than Toyota had introduced in the Jolt. The second one I actually got rid of a mere 7 weeks ago.
When introduced, many of us YW residents were disappointed in the colour as it often appeared to be faded right from the get-go. Canada didn't get the colour offering at all.
Now if it had of looked like these, I think the uptake would have been greater.

Yeah, I read through that thread from when it came out, and most people were really disappointed by how not-bright it looked. That bright yellow Yaris looks really good. Is it yours? It looks fast. Bright yellow is a fast color.
The color they actually came out with is not a fast color, but it's a happy color, like something you'd see on an old VW Bus. I still like it.

There's a really interesting graphic here (http://www.vocativ.com/culture/society/how-color-preferences-among-car-buyers-have-changed-over-the-years/) that shows the top five color choices over the past 60 years. I don't think a brighter shade of yellow would have made it any more popular. Very few people buy color at all anymore. I was amazed that green was the #1 color so recently. I love green. Good luck finding a green car anymore. :frown:

There are a few of us on here who have done transmission conversions. On the Yaris it is really not that hard to do, particularly if you can track down a wrecked one to swap the parts over from.

WeeYari, hats off to you for rocking the yellow. The car in those pictures looks fantastic; is it yours? Bright yellow is a fast color. It goes really well with those mods.
The yellow Toyota used isn't a fast color. I'd call it a happy color, like something you'd see on a VW Bus. I still like it.

I don't think a more vivid yellow would have improved sales any. Hardly anyone buys colors anymore. Up until ten years ago, the top four colors across the globe were mostly all colors. Even brown was more popular than white or grey, for three decades! But, over the past ten years, black, white, and grey have moved all the colors out of the top 3. I had a link to a graphic that showed the top colors over the past 60 years, but my post was insta-deleted when I tried to post it. I was amazed to see that green was the most popular color for several years in the '90's. I love green. Good luck finding a green car anymore.
There are a few of us on here who have done transmission conversions. On the Yaris it is really not that hard to do, particularly if you can track down a wrecked one to swap the parts over from.I'm sure that would be easier & cheaper than a (proper) re-paint, but more trouble than I'd like to go though. I know on the Metro, switching from the awful 3-speed automatic to a manual involves an ECU and wiring harness swap, along with a few other little details. I'd rather wait. I'll find one... someday...

I really don't like white cars, aesthetically, but I can't argue with the heat factor. I went around the parking lot with a pyrometer to compare cars on a 115° day, and the results were not surprising.

I tend to think different colors, suit different cars. Black and metallic red aren't generally my favorite Toyota colours, although there are some really cool customized black Yarii on this site :-) Yellow can look really sexy on a Yaris 👍 So can white on a sporty customized Yaris, as well as white with a black hood and rims.

Well, a dealer in Albuquerque has a blue '09 with the power package. 53,000 miles, for only $5,000. That's at the low end of KBB's private party values, and below their dealer range. I wonder why? Just hard to sell a stick, or is something wrong with it?
2009 TOYOTA YARIS (http://albuquerque.craigslist.org/cto/5792296872.html)
If that was in town, I'd go get it today, but I'm not sure how I'd handle a car purchase 7 hours away, in another state.

Not that it makes a big difference, but it's just over 57k miles. From the pics, it looks good, but you never know until you walk up on it and take it for a spin.
Long shot, but any chance they have another location, or a sister dealership closer to you that they could transfer it to?

Just hard to sell a stick, or is something wrong with it?
3dr + stick = a double negative.
The positive result in this case is reflected in the resale value for anyone who wants that configuration.
I find it hard to believe that you have to search that far out to find anything. I guess that's what happens when you filter out grey, white, black, and red. Pretty much only leaves you with blue and yellow as choices.

There's a maroon one in Portland. I'd get that if it were closer.
If it's manual and yellow, I'll take it. If it's not yellow, it has to also have the 60/40 rear seats. That really narrows it down. There have been a few that were closer, but they had the one-piece seats that don't slide or fold completely flat.
I wouldn't mind a Fit in Tidewater Blue or Blaze Orange, either, but those are also rare. And adding cruise isn't nearly as easy as on a Yaris.
There's a guy real close to me who's practically giving away a blue Saturn Astra because he's moving and can't take it with him, and the camshaft position sensor is throwing a code (common problem on those cars). But the paint is toast, and fuel economy is not great. They're supposed to be pretty reliable as far as German cars go, but not Toyota reliable. 75,000 miles for $2,500... still tempting.

I think I'll go look at this one tomorrow. Maybe I'm giving up on the split-seat thing. And yellow (that was a long shot). Rear seats can be swapped, eventually, from a junked car. The 60/40 seats don't seem all that rare in automatic models.
2007 TOYOTA YARIS COUPE (http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/cto/5829656354.html)
It's got sedan seats in the front. Bizarre. Why would someone put sedan seats in a hatchback?
The paint looks intact, which is rare here. It's missing a hubcap, no big deal. The plate is from the last month or two, so the seller just bought it. I wonder why they're selling it so soon? They're not flipping it, since they wouldn't have bothered to register it if they were.

Seriously, I've had Craigslist bookmarks set up for nearly every region in the U.S. outside the rusty midwest/northeast. Not a single manual Yellow Yaris has appeared. There are magenta ones in Portland and Alabama, though. No luck on a nationwide Cars.com search, either.
Even ones with both a manual transmission and the split rear seat are rare to the point of non-existence.
This appeared locally today, though:

That's plan B to the letter. I wanted 2009-2011, blue, manual, 60/40 seats, and the power package is a nice bonus. The paint looks flawless, clear headlights, and intact original floormats speak to careful ownership.
It's a curbstoner, unfortunately. The main glovebox is busted. The miles are a little high. But, the price is okay. Hopefully I'm able to get in touch with the guy.
Not a fan of the hubcaps, but those are the easiest thing in the world to replace.
scratchpaddy
11-18-2016, 11:39 AM
So, the paint is actually pretty bad. Most of the clear is gone from the roof and mirrors, and the hood is starting to peel. It needs new tires. The front left headlight lens and bumper have a small melted line running over them. I think somebody tried a jump start to or from a big truck with cheap 10-gage cables, and the cables caught fire.
Everything else on it is really nice. The interior is in very good shape. The engine bay is beautiful, no leaks, and clean oil. The glove box was not broken, just out of whack. I fixed it in five seconds.
I talked them down a little on price, and bought it. No one was available to give me a ride to retrieve the car, so I took the bus and train to get back there. You know what I saw on the way? A yellow jolt Yaris, right there on Central Avenue! Not for sale, and probably automatic, but I can't remember the last time I saw any yellow Yaris, at all.
This car has tons of power! So fast! Power steering feels really strange now, after years driving without it. Feather-light in parking lots, and heavy on the highway. Very strange. Brakes are super sensitive, I'll have to get used to that. I got aquainted with the hydraulic clutch and electronic throttle in the stop-and-go traffic on the way home.
It'll take some time to get used to driving such a big, powerful car.

scratchpaddy
11-18-2016, 09:03 PM
In the future, possibly, but not yet. I see new headlight assemblies are only $50. I was expecting 5x that much. It's a pretty small defect, though.
You mentioned refreshing the paint on yours. How much does that cost, if you're getting the full primer, base, and clear treatment? I wouldn't expect it to be cheap, even if it's just the hood (such a tiny hood!) and the roof.
I might spring for new wheels, though. I shouldn't, but there will never be a better time as now, with bald tires and hubcaps that make me cringe. I'm leaning towards bronze. I think bronze looks really good with blue. I won't be putting on low profile tires or lowering the car, though, so I have to find some that don't look dumb at stock height with tall-ish sidewals.

11-18-2016, 11:13 PM
That's cool. In respect to paint, it's hard for me to say because I know a body shop owner so he takes care of me on cash pricing. Would be a different story if I was just walking in. Still worth doing, IMO. Crispy paint makes such a huge impact.
Might I suggest vinyl wrap? Far cheaper than paint and you can do some really cool stuff with it.
scratchpaddy
11-19-2016, 11:49 AM
Yeah, a lot of things make or break a car's appearance, but paint is the biggest factor, IMO. A flawless paint job really stands out in this land of eternal sunshine.
Vinyl would still require much of the same prep as new paint, at least where it's peeling, and I'd have to either do the whole car, or go two-tone. I'd rather stick with paint. I do really like this color, even if it's not yellow. I'll live with it for now, and decide if I want to spend the $$$$ on paint once I'm back to making a steady wage. The sides of the car still look really good, at least.
For the wheels, I think I'll look around some junkyards first. 4x100 wheels are much easier to find than the 4x114.3 wheels my last car had. I won't find anything bronze, but I'll see if something else catches my eye.

I love the yellow Yarii too... There was one I almost purchased here in Raleigh, and I'm still second guessing my decision a little bit! :)

There was a yellow 5 speed 2005 echo hatchback for sale here in Newfoundland, Canada a couple weeks ago 😂 a bit to far away I do believe

Looks to be in pretty good shape - and even has the rare 2nd-Gen fog light installation.

Good looking example. I really like the subtle differences in the 09+'s

Kinda weird to see those unicorn options (foglights, tach) on a manual car with steel wheels.
Good looking example. I really like the subtle differences in the 09+'sAfter getting an '07 for my parents, I've decided I like those years a little better (except for the fact that yellow wasn't offered then ). But, the changes are so subtle, I'm happy with my '09. Blazing Blue has really grown on me, too.
Still, that's a great price for a car with 55k miles, with all the features I ever wanted in a Yaris, but in the wrong place, at the wrong time. :brokenheart:
If I had the extra money I'd be on my way there right now to grab that thing. I love it.You and me both! I hope there's a yellow fan in the southeast who sees it.

I'm only 100 mi away, so I brought it up to my wife... she rolled her eyes so I guess that's a no. Haha. Looks like it was in a minor rear end collision, but still a great deal.

I love how, on the VIN report, every single time the registration is renewed, it says "Vehicle color noted as Yellow." As if, every time they went to the DMV, someone behind the counter goes, "Woah! That car's yellow!"

Well, that car ain't worth it. I called about it and you basically get to pay double the price that it's listed for thanks to over 3000 dollars in random fees! What kind of bullshit is that?! That dealer sucks, I hope they go out of business.

 What type of fees are they tossing in? Never heard/seen anything like that.

1300 dollars for "eff", 900 for nitrogen for the tires, 150 for some private title garbage, 650 dealer doc fee, plus then tax, title, registration, and so forth. I'm sure they'd charge you a fee for the privilege of using toilet paper in the bathroom.

Well, I finally got my yellow fix another way. I saw a pair of old bikes on craigslist for $100 last week. One of them caught my eye...

I fixed it up, and now I'm riding this baby to work. 1974 Schwinn Le Tour in "Kool Lemon."

That's a very nice classic bike!
Is that the actual photo of your bike leaning against the tree after you "fixed it up"?

Yep, that's my actual bike, on the first test ride. All it needed was a good cleaning, greasing, brake pads, and new tires. Holy crap the tires were bad. They may have been original. Actual "Schwinn" badged tires just like in the catalog picture, but old and crumbly.

LMFAO!
I actually had the same bike. Well, a CCM version I believe, but identical non-the-less, except with a leather saddle and shifters on the frame. It was my first 'grownup' bike for which I paid a ton of money for back in early '70s dollars.

:bonk:
Love your quest for a yellow Yaris!
On a side note, you should have G10 turbo or G13B swapped your Metro from all the links on teamswift.

I've got a friend in Apache Junction who's working on a G13B swap, but with a turbo and megasquirt engine management. It's a big project. The nice thing about the three cylinder, though, is you can pull it out by hand...

I believe that's the car that stupid Toyota dealer had listed cheap but then doubled the price with ridiculous fees.
