Hey everyone!

http://imgur.com/CmFzolY.jpg

Sorry for the bad pic. Double sorry because I do photography and it hurts me to post a photo like this. Ill get some better pics tomorrow.

Picked up this rather beat up Yaris today for $700 with 275k KM on the odo.
Smells like weed and ash(seriously its not good haha), needs a muffler and rad, radio, and some small stuff. Should be together and cleaned by the end of the week and be a nice car again. Drives really well and has no rust, so those were the two most important factors. I'm going to be using it for commuting long distances for my business, and the occasional around town.

I've owned a ton of cars and I bought this to give my truck a break for awhile while I do some serious repairs(frame and rust). Saving gas will be nice too.

Here is my truck. 1996 Tacoma 2.7L

http://imgur.com/GneejJI.jpg

And here is my project car 1981 Volvo 240 on MS3x. But I recently moved and my car is 6 hours away from me right now. I have plans to bring it up to my house soon.

Ill be searching through these forums for all of the tips and tricks for this new car. Seriously this is really new for me I normally buy 90s and 80s vehicles. My last hatchback was a 1990 Ford Festiva that I absolutely loved(and shouldn't have sold). This Yaris really reminds me of it and I hope to bring it back to a better state.

Great find! It's amazing the deals that can be had when you do your own work on a car. Hell, even if your engine was toast, you could easily find a 1nz will around 100k km on it and it shouldn't cost you more then $500 for one.

Keep us updated on the fixes, looking forward to seeing how it turns out

Yessss! It posted! And thanks Mod who did it. I thought it was gone.

First off. This is definitely one of the dirtiest cars I've purchased. You know when you spill coffee and you don't clean it up so the spill area turns black? There must have been 5-10 spilled coffees in the center console.

I removed the whole interior:

http://imgur.com/8xIYoi8.jpg

Rear seat rear bolts mashed like silly putty, even with the correct tool. Had to grind them off. Should be interesting getting those out later. But right now the rear seats won't be used(plans for that later). Notice the dirt...

http://imgur.com/On5cyEe.jpg

See all the black grime in the middle? Lots of simple green, brushing, and shop towels later and...

http://imgur.com/4sUOYCI.jpg

Clean! Also threw some rust paint loosly on the typical rusty areas, should stop it for awhile. The carpet is still really dirty, I just hosed it off and left it to dry. Might get a pro to steam clean it after I put it back in the car.

I was looking to find a set of 15" or 16" wheels for the car. Searched Kijiji for a few days, then this perfect set of 15s came up for $250 pretty close to me. They're actually the best Kijiji wheels I have ever found, barely any scratches. The tires will last this summer but are 6 years old so I need new ones. I show up and the guy asked what I was putting them on. I guess he had them on a Corrola and had the right hub centering rings for them as well, bonus. Pictures to come!

Right now the wheels on the car are soaking in PB blaster. Its the most rust fused wheel I've delt with. I hope it comes off tomorrow. Have to replace a broken wheel stud.

#racecar?

Yes, I'm going to oil spray ASAP. As much as I hate working through the oil, I want this to last a few years.

What do you mean by stripper model?

No A/C, No rear wiper. I'm thinking of getting this brand new A/C kit though. http://www.kijiji.ca/v-view-details.html?adId=1245569089

Not #racecar(I wish) but I may autoX if I find some good events around here. I'm actually going to build a pretty flatbed type platform in the back for hauling some stuff. Over the next 4 months I have to ship over 3000 packages, and will be doing so mostly in the states because its so much cheaper. This car will be the hauler.

Also I just recently moved from Hamilton, and my family is back there. Driving the truck back to Hamilton is a huge pain, so this will be much nicer. Sometimes do work down there too.

Stripper model is referring to the CE trim level which commonly meant no a/c or rear wiper was installed.

That looks awesome.

Yeah its definitely a stripper.

The PO put in some Toyota radio that clearly did not come with the car. There was definitely an aftermarket radio in there at some point, thankfully they used a harness and did not hack up the original radio wiring. Only two of the three connectors in the car now connect to the Toyota radio that came with the car, so its not right and doesn't turn on. I might as well just get an aftermarket since I cleaned up the horribly installed radio harness, and its probably easier than to source a stock one for the car. Didn't even realize it only has two speakers.

Actually these all arrived at the dealerships without an installed radio. Dealer had to put one in. Maybe they still do. Don't know.

This car has had a lot done to it throughout its life. It definitely had the right radio when it was first installed from the dealer and probably had several others after. I keep trying to figure out what kind of life this thing has had, but it keeps getting stranger.

Here are the rims and tires I picked up:

http://imgur.com/y79mIFy.jpg

Tires will be done this summer, will need to get new ones next season. Very clean for $250.

Never has a rim been so rust welded to a hub. I left it to soak in PB blaster over night, also hit it with the torch for a long time.
Had to replace a broken stud:

http://imgur.com/5rbT7aJ.jpg

http://imgur.com/obSd9SW.jpg

Check out those brake shoes! off to the store..

http://imgur.com/gTeVD5u.jpg

Decided to get new drums as well, threw some paint on them so they don't rust immediately. Also 2 of the other studs didn't thread properly so I replaced those too, should have just done all 4.

It was fully broken. I have a new muffler on the way.

What are these connectors for? Under center console.

Got the brakes done and the other wheel on.

http://imgur.com/68zQpcX.jpg

and fixed the hatch lock, sort of. It was jammed, so I unjammed it and now the key kind of works, there is still something wrong with it. I have to push it in only part way to turn it because of these little notches in the plastic. Its like there is a piece or spring missing.

Took it apart to make it move again:

http://imgur.com/X6J9aid.jpg

The key must be worn out so it doesn't want to unlock as easily but it will actually do it now(didn't before).

This little piece hits the metal here:

http://imgur.com/WjmUd1H.jpg

Hits and jams when I am unlocking it, I can lock it when its unlocked, but nearly impossible to unlock again. Its very strange, I can sometimes do it if I only push the latch button in part way.

There is a channel for a little plastic piece and it only works when the button is slightly pushed in like I mentioned before. Doesn't seem right...

http://imgur.com/U92hNNv.jpg

Also decided to paint the back part since I will be putting in a cargo type area, should look nicer.

http://imgur.com/pdlqRvw.jpg

Shift Knob - stock or otherwise
Passenger Side Visor

The connectors under the center console are for the AT shift lever. Park lock, key lock, indicators, etc. The wire harness is the same for both versions.

Overall an awesome find! I'm really impressed by the amount of work you're putting into restoring it!

Will do! It looked pretty good for $66 CAD. Looked exactly the same as the rusted one I pulled off, but no idea if that one was stock. I ran it for a few minutes, but not long enough for the seal to heat and expand yet so there could be some sound leak there.

Maybe, just thinking about future, fog lights, or custom electronics. Nothing really important. Maybe I can use those plugs for some switched power if I grab a couple connectors from an auto at the junkyard.

What switches come in inserts from factory? Power window switches?

Ill probably put USB power next to the cig lighter and/or USB connection to the radio.

The inserts have the traction off switch, I think the ipod hook up thing if you pay for it, and the power door lock switch.

Aux, USB/Aux, door lock, traction control are the ones I know of. There may be more in other vehicles. You can also put some small connectors or switches on blanks, but there's a LOT of ribs on the underside that have to be trimmed away to fit anything else.

Daily/business courier. Haha

Main reason, truck frame is rusty and I want to repair it. So this is replacing it in the meantime.

Second reason, I did a very successful kickstarter recently and I have thousands of packages to ship. I love about 1.5hr from border and shipping the in US will save me thousands of dollars. I wanted A small hatch that was cheap on gas that could haul the packages. Plus it doesn't hurt that I love small hatches.

I really just want to get it to "Stage 0" and clean it up so it's a nice comfy car. The truck is far from comfy. However often I can't help myself so I may do small things to it here or there.

Yes, bought it for $750 with 175k Miles on it, ran so smooth. No rust. Suspension was a little clunky even after replacing almost everything, but it was solid enough. Just thin sheet metal, doors were 1" thick. When I bought it...

Those are 12" trailer tires. No aspect ratio, only one size! And found this in the car!

Drove it for a few months, saved hundreds in gas commuting, put a couple hundred in parts rims and tires on it. Sold it for $1750. I sold it because I was going to have to import it to Canada from the states and just didn't have time to figure it out... also, unsafe for friends and family haha

My side gig is a courier, and these cars are absolutely the way to go. My last car made it 344k trouble free miles, and was only put down due to a car accident.

My advice, carry a full size spare, cordless impact and floor jack. Aside from that, inspecting the serpentine belt, these things are bulletproof

Wow that was one of those basic Festiva's ever made. Zero options. No radio, no a/c, no nuttin. That's so damn cool. My dad had one brand new back in 1991 I think. His was white but it had a few options... am/fm radio, power steering, an "upgraded" interior (more cloth and less plastic/vinyl), motorized seat belts, and I think that was it. It was an awesome car back in the day.

Ha thats awesome. If only we had the room to keep every car that was ever owned by our family. One of the hardest things in life.

Oddly enough, I think mine had a radio installed and dealer installed A/C. Or at least some part of its life it had A/C installed. I had to recharge it but the A/C still worked. This one had the power seat belts, but I replaced them with manual during plans to import to Canada.

Got the interior back in so I can go get an etest/safety, seats aren't really cleaned, but I'm going to take it to a detailing place for that. Smells a lot better already, helps that everything is covered in wd-40.

Did a junkyard run on Saturday and found an 07 4dr Yaris in bad front end/side swipe. Got some missing interior parts so I also installed:
- passenger visor(last one was broken off)
- new vents over radio(last one was broken)
- shift knob, from a Camry I think.

How does the stock shift boot attach to the center console? It came detached when I bought the car and it doesn't seem to have any way of attaching it back on.

I still need a new center console and shift boot, the rubber part for the clutch pedal.
The shifter also seems to creek moving it back and forth(like from 2nd to 4th gear), I added some new grease around but its still there.
