I'm pondering a Yaris purchase. Periodically I have to haul fairly long objects (ladder). My present Acura integra does it nicely. My question is how much distance does the Yaris have between the back of the drivers seat and the back hatch (seat folded down)? I rarely have to haul bigger items and could strap them down. I'm hoping the distance is at least four feet. Any help would be appreciated.

132cm/52in at the bottom, slightly less as you go up due to the seats angling backwards, and the rear of the vehicle angling forwards.

buy a pt cruiser, the front passenger seat folded down flat, i carried 2x4's 8ft long, carried ladders, you name it... the yaris's front seat doesn't fold flat!
I have carried 8 ft 2x4's in my yaris sedan, but limited to what you can fit between the opening between front seats, so maybe 12 at a time, no ladder in the sedan version, they won't fit for sure!

You guys kick ass! the information (52 inch) and the pictures answered all my questions. I want a 40 MPG commuter car that can haul some stuff when necessary. The Yaris seems perfect. It'll be a few months before i can buy one but the decision is made. Thanks for the help. That rear hatch opening looks very useable. Could anyone tell me if a four foot wide sheet of material would fit diagonally in the opening?

I don't think that would work as the diagonal opening is about 44-45in. If you could flex the material it'd work, though.

It's not perfect but I'll find a way to fit what needs to fit. I'm liking the Yaris more each day.
