I drive a camry right now to work (26 miles) and am thinking about adding a Yaris to my garage for the commute to work. I've never had a car this small, but fell in love with the car when I test drove it (5-spd manual LB).
Anyone have reservations about the size while on the interstate being
followed by a semi?
I think a Yaris is right up my alley and am looking forward to walking into
the dealer and making my purchase.
He quoted me 13,500 out the door for a base 2-door LB 5-spd mt with convenience package in the midwest/stlouis area.

get the power package(windows ,doors ,mirrors ) .it's well worth the extra cash & will help keep the resale value up. I sold my Tacoma Pre-Runner & went with the Yaris saving a huge amout on gas each week .. the automatic works quite well for me as i drive for a living & don't want my commute to be any more work than possiable

I have the 5-spud, with the power package which is great! I try to run a little faster than the semi's. I upgraded the horns which I don't use that often, unless in San Francisco going through Chinatown. They work great now and people take the car a little more seriously.
Anyhow, check your insurance for a quote, every quote I got was nearly the same as my 2005 Xterra!!!

Only concern would be the sidewinds on the interstate....which I'm used to now... but it will never feel as good as the Camry though (it's taller, lighter, and shorter).
I agree about the power pkg....unless you're into the bare bones.

well I was just thinking I wanted basic transportation , hence my
hesitation to add features but I appreciate the input. Ill ponder it all.
im just a working girl and the thought of owning 2 new cars to me was
a bit radical, but the yaris had me at first glance, and the gas mileage
rocks.
I've researched the insurance, am pre-approved and trying to
decide on a color. I have noticed that every time I throw a price at
my salesman he gets emotionless and the vail of car salesman falls
upon him like sand in an hour glass. 13,500 is the top price I can
afford. Ill shop a couple other dealers and see what I can find!!!!
Thanks for all your input!!

The yaris is an amazing commuter car because of its efficiency and comfort. But since you already own a Camry, I don't see why buying a Yaris is justifiable. I mean, if you pay $14,000 (when it is all said and done) for your Yaris, are you going to actually be saving money in the long run?

I went from a Camry to a Yaris and have no regrets.

well call it what you want, i just want a 5-spd LOL.
my camry has gotten ping'd in the parking lot at work by ppl
who just dont give a rat's pat00tie about cars or other people's
property, and It infuriates me. this would be not only a commuter
car but a toy for me. I cant believe how i've really gotten into
cars lately! Im treating this like a present for (hopefully) graduating
from nursing school in Dec, albeit giving it to myself a bit early lol.
men have their mid-life crisis sports car, I have my mid-life crisis
car-of-my-youth. lol. When I was 20 all I wanted was a VW Beetle
and to be a stewardess. Well, I've accomplished everything in life
I've set out for, except I've never owned a VW Bug....and now
I want to deliver a Yaris to my 2-toned, glossy floor'd
chair-rail decorated garage! haha.
Bayou Blue Metallic would match the walls of my garage but
i think im leaning toward Polar White. :burnrubber:

Good luck finding ANY 5-sp Hatchback with Power Package in the US.
there are like 10 of them - literally!
1. Bayou Blue will no longer be offer in 2008, so you better get one if you see one now.
2. You may have to end up special ordering that manual with 5-sp. I did IN MARCH - and was told this week to wait another TWO MONTHS!!
my tanking acura just decided it like to run on three cylinders this week - 230,000 miles and not many more before the thing craters.
had I known in March that I could not go to the lot - slap down 15k in cash and drive away with a 5-sp with power package - but instead order such a SIMPLE package and WAIT over half a year, I would have told Toyota to go f^&k themselves!
now I stuck with a tanking car and have already sunk 200 bucks only a couple weeks ago to keep the old girl rolling along.
I will NEVER buy another Toyota again - their marketing of the Yaris SUCKS, their promotion of the car is non-existant, the options offered in the US is NILL (while the options EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD is out the arse).
this is simply TOO MUCH to put up with IMO.
good luck dicking with the Toyota tards, I hope you get your car.

There is a lot of truth in this.
I went from a Camry to a Yaris and have no regrets.
This would be the most cost effective thing to do if you were looking to get into something new and more fuel efficient.

As far as it goes with cross wind; you could just lower it like a lot of folks on this site. It really improves the handling with out a lot of compromise on the ride.
If you have to deal with stop and go traffic you will want to lean more toward an automatic. I personally enjoy a manual too much to compromise the performance for convenience.
Best of luck!

1.It's a color! Buy what you like.
2. It is due to his location. Sucks but it's true. You obviously can get a manual...you drove one. To boot there is one sitting at my local dealership with the power package.
Now that said if you are going to be picky about what options and color you could be in for a long wait. This is in no way reflective of the overall quality of the manufacturer or it's products.
I'm in love with my car and I too wish there were more thing to play with as far as accessories. There will be more as time passes, this car is still so new on the American market, just need to be patient.
Again...Best of Luck!

The girl wants a manual. I think she should get a manual. I compromised on two automatics before getting my manual 2 Door Hatchback. I am as happy as..........someone who is really happy.

I have one! I guess I'm one of the lucky 10! w00t. Its in Polar White. I was really hoping for Red or blue, but I still love it. I had a white '89 toyota tercel before so this is probably the best car ever compared to that thing.

Just get one! I got mine in April & I LOVE it! There are only a few things I would change/like to see added.
As far as driving on the interstate with the "big boys" it is no different than driving any other car...keep your head out of your rear, pay attention & drive...drive...drive.

I have had no issues at all with semi-trucks or any lack of control on the hwy, this after a long trip to FL this past summer. However, I go the speed limit. If you're blazing along at 80 mph, you might not have as much control as you would at 65 should any cross-wind or air turbulance hit you.

Well I visited another dealer today and got some more
priced and really didnt negotiate at all.
12,300 for the base model manual trans. with convenience
and all weather package. 12895 for base model manual trans.
with power package. there is a $150 "processing fee' at this
dealer, plus tax title and liscense.
I figure 13,330 out the door for the manual and 13964 out the
door for the power package.
Comments anyone???

well i'm paying 13.5k for mine and it is bare bones +cruise control. I really don't need all that power locks and windows stuff. i figured it was just stuff that could break later on down the road. as far as semi's being behind me, i really don't mind it at all, but then again where i live there are semi's all over the place! i like the size because it makes it very easy to zip in and out of traffic. just make sure you know that people see that you are changing lanes. especially coming out from behind semi's or other large vehicles. i am very satisfied with my blazing blue LB. it makes me happy >^_^< lol. i did test drive the automatic AND the manual, and i stuck with the manual. mostly because all i drive is manual hahaha. you might try and argue them down to about 13.7k. because mine was supposed to be 13833, and i could have probably argued them down a little bit more for mine. as far as shipping, they had to ship mine from the next town (about 100 miles) and they had it in a couple of days.

cross-wind hasn't bothered me much either. the only thing i would worry about is hydroplaning during a heavy storm or something. since the car is so light and sits really high for how short it is from nose to butt it tends to hydro' a little easier than some of the larger vehicles i've owned and driven. but, just stay cautious and drive responsibly and you should've nave any problems.

If I'm not too late posting this, really consider the all-weather package too, it gives you stronger starter, heater and a larger capacity washer resevoir. I heard somewhere it's standard on all cars sold above the Mason dixon line, but that was just watercooler talk...

For me, I have no problems driving on the highway. Although sometimes, I have to remind myself that I have a smaller car so even though someone seems to be tailgating me or really close when i'm stopped, they're not really that close. And someone said something about things that break but none of my previous cars (all with power packages or it came standard) had an issue where the power windows/locks broke. Only thing breaking had to do with mechanical issues due to age.

I have found that cars are cheaper in california than they are in the midwest.
I was looking for a 07 camry and found it 1500 cheaper out there
but didnt feel like driving it all the way back to illinois so i just
bought here. Even cars direct was cheaper if i was to buy
in california!
just a thought.
