Does anyone have any info on the 2008 Yaris yet? Any idea when it'll be released?

It's not too early. There are already 2008s on the market (2008 Ford Super Duty, 2008 Scion xB, etc.). There is info about other 2008 cars that are going to be hitting the market ...
08's should be hitting the market soon. Im guessing with no changes because Yaris is such a new model.

I'm going to beat a dead horse by saying I hope the 2008s come with a tach. :D
I'm guessing the 2008s won't show up for a few more months (September?), but I was hoping some info was out there regarding some prospective changes.

I believe the 08 models do come in September or around that time. I think the only change is tire preasure sensor because its the law for all 08.

i keep my tire pressure @ 50 psi :) ( no need for sensor - if they blow up they blow up ) but i consistently get ca. 45 mpg nonhwy driving............ as for tacho, c'mon just get yourself scangauge II for $ 160 and get over with it ( and many other gauges); it also gives you a malfunction code reader ( CAN protocol ready thingy) as well as fe computer....... personally on mine i display rpm, mpg , coolant temperature, and throttle position sensor readings

You are correct. The "B" Package on the RS has been discontinued and is now standard equipment. My guess is there will be no change in the price so you may as well buy now and take advantage of the low(er) finance/ lease rates.
I asked myself the same thing and concluded that I could not wait until September or October to become a Yaris owner.
Having been a former MR2 Turbo owner, I still cannot believe how much fun I am having in the Yaris.

Just get the '07 with the "B" package... I would just suck it up rather than waiting for the '08 (months away).
The price of the current "B" package adds $1490 to the 3dr and $1200 to the 5dr.

I don't understand why they have to have all these different models for the different countries. Why not make them all available everywhere? What's the difference if the the RS model is sold in the U.S. or Canada? A sale is a sale.

Someone told me that in the US at least, it's because of how things were set up when cars were first imported from Japan. He called it "protectionist policy," and said that domestic car manufacturers had and continue to have a say in how many and what kind of cars are imported.
Of course, to get around import caps and other restrictions, Japanese makers just built plants in the US. But apparently decisions about what model goes to what market still have more to do with marketing and politics than any thing else.

Where? You're the first person I've ever heard saying this, ever.
Astroman
07-06-2007, 03:46 PM
Ok, I kinda get what your saying, but it doesn't apply ALL the time, just uphill. These are a couple things I found. And I have done real world tests myself, and I average better using cruise control.
6. Use Cruise Control — Selectively
Using cruise control can improve your gas mileage by helping you maintain a steady speed, but only if you are driving on mostly flat roads. If you are driving in hilly terrain, using cruise control typically causes your vehicle to speed up faster (to maintain the preset speed) than it would if you were operating the accelerator yourself. Before you push that cruise control button, think about the terrain ahead.
Using a car’s cruise control setting should improve gas mileage, as long as the road is level and not congested with traffic. Cruise control devices are not as prone to pump the accelerator too often to maintain speed as the driver might be. The engine may not need all of that extra fuel in order to provide sufficient power, so using cruise control on long stretches of highway should increase gas mileage by at least 25%. If the road is located in a mountainous region, however, using cruise control may be problematic. Many cruise control systems tend to use far more fuel when climbing hills, since the car must overcome the effects of gravity (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-gravity.htm) as well as maintain a preset speed.
grampi
07-06-2007, 04:08 PM
whats the point of cruise control it takes away from the driving experience, is boring and wastes gas.
Make a 5 hour trip in any vehicle without cruise and you'll find out what it's point is.
I don't know about you, but in my automatic civic, my cruise control would also control the gears. So if it needs to switch it, it does it on its own. (switching from 4th to 3rd when passing etc...)

Actually cost is getting to be an issue with the lousy exchange rate, discontinued GST rebate, and 2.5% duty. An RS 5-door is roughly $20k Canadian before taxes, and can not be purchased new (Toyota won't release export paperwork until 6 months registration in Canada).
You figure a used one around $17.5-18k and once you've got it back over the border (I never did get a firm answer on the speedo, as it does have mph indicated), with the exchange and all, you're looking at about the same in U.S. currency. Not really worth it. A Scion xD is similarly equipped, plus the Auris engine for estimated under $15k.
Insurance issues (think of the bodywork headaches), local taxes, expense of changing speedo (if necessary) and financing on top of the other issues really put the brakes on my efforts for a 5-door.

My mom had a '83 Mercury Gran Marquis that was from canada, and it still had the original speedo and odometer in KPH. It did have MPH, but it was the smaller inner set of numbers. I'm not sure when the car was imported as it was a '83. Laws could have changed in 24 years.

Dude, I've done my homework. If I were to get this car Used RS 5-door (http://castlegar.toyota.ca/dwp/experience/en/home/po_display.jsp?index=1) for $17,000, this is how it pencils out:
$17,000 + 7% ($1190) GST (PST can be exempted) = $18,190 Can at 4.935% exchange
= $17,334.54 U.S. + 2.5% Duty (on pre-tax) = $17,739.55 + 8.4% Use Tax (on pre-tax) (Washington State) = $19,100.39
If Registered Importer were required, add another $400 and another $400 if they require speedo change.
Last time I did these numbers at 13% exchange, and you could still get the GST rebated, and it came out roughly even Canadian to U.S. Now it just doesn’t make sense to do it.

You can definitly get the dealer to put in leather for you. Theyll outsource it to an upholstery shop, and then charge you an arm and a leg more than it would have been to just take it straight to the shop most likely.

Cruise control maintains a predictable, constant speed, which optimizes fuel economy and improves traffic flow. Yaris Cruise control would keep the vehicle at a constant speed so you do not annoy other drivers by speeding-up and slowing-down while you are dialing your cellphone or picking your nose.
Standard, steering-wheel-mounted factory cruise control should be a required safety feature on all cars. Yaris hatchback cruise control would be a much more useful feature than the new government-mandated tire-pressure monitoring system.
Thirty-Nine
08-01-2007, 11:03 AM
No way. People in the US rarely check their tire pressure which is both a saftey and fuel economy concern. Cruise control is no more than a convienince. Improves traffic flow? Not when morons "set it and forget it" in the left lane.
sherryberry
08-01-2007, 12:30 PM
cruise control is good for long trips and highway driving.. and even then it can't be used during rush hour traffic. Chicago traffic is so bad that I never used cruise control in my old maxima. I used it for going back and forth from school and even then, I didn't use it too much in case there was a cop around and i had to brake

Lots of luck with that campaign, 39. I have seen every agency from insurance industry, to police, to auto clubs and beyond, try to get people to move over!!! Unfortunately, drivers get into conversations, I-tunes, or whatever, and lose track of what they are supposed to be doing: DRIVING!
At the same time, a buddy reminded me of a trick that works for many people, "Problem Identification". You are following a guy doing 5 under the limit in the left lane. He is happily chatting away with his passengers, and he is happy. You, on the other hand, are working yourself up for a coronary, cursing, yelling, flashing your lights, you are UNhappy. Who has the problem? Certainly not the guy ahead of you!
Solution? Pull over, have a walkabout or a coffee, and then get back on the road; chances are you will never catch him again. This solution is going to be easier on all concerned, particularly you. There is no point in blowing an aorta over a guy who is completely unaware of your rage.
If it makes you feel better, call the cops, suggest that the guy is under an influence because of his behaviour, and give them the license number. NOW, he has the problem, not you!
Thirty-Nine
08-01-2007, 12:46 PM
TLyttle - Don't get me wrong. I am no road rager. I just find it annoying when people cruise in the left-hand lane. Done deal.
As I like to say, "Do the RIGHT thing: Move RIGHT for faster traffic."
It is the law.

Actually, what's more annoying is when people speed up and then slow down constantly in the left lane. And by speed up i mean go way over the speed limit and then suddenly get to like below speed limit.

My impression during my vacation to California was that Washington drivers seem less aware than Californians. It's really bad here. Uphills with three lanes I find the far right lane has no one in it, and I cruise right up while everyone else stays in the center and left lanes.

Gee, I know I'm getting old: a bumper to me is a structure at either end of the vehicle that allows for incidental contact with other objects without doing damage. See? I told you I'm old! Now there is just another sheetmetal panel out there that bruise if you hit a grasshopper at any more than a walking speed.
I suppose "bumpers" have been outlawed as a safety hazard by the faceless, witless, bureaucracy...
Violin
08-07-2007, 07:32 AM
Actually modern bumpers are made of polyethylene or something, not sheet metal. They're designed to absorb impact to protect occupants and pedestrians. It's pretty amazing how much impact they'll absorb without damage.
I'm old enough to rmember the chrome covered battering rams cars used to come with. I'll take these any day.
TLyttle
08-07-2007, 10:53 PM
Whatever they are made of, they dint at the slightest provocation; my wife proved that.
I was in the replating business decades ago, and I am completely aware of the battering rams that the US autos came with!! At the same time, I am also aware of the "soft" bumpers from the 70s-80s that would take a tap without needing replacement. My Volvo, and (eeek!!) Omni have bumpers that will take a push or a nudge without permanently disfiguring them; why is that so hard to do now? I see no reason to dump out many hundreds of dollars to keep my car looking like it isn't a refugee from a demo derby because someone (gently) backed into it!

What is this scangauge II ... where can you pick them up... sounds like a good investment. I just got a 07 Yaris LE 5 door. When I read about this CAN network I started to get worried. I think having one of these scanners is a good idea.
Why do I see a lot of people moaning about the tach. of the 6 Yaris 5 doors the dealer had on the lot all had tachs.

i have not read the whole thread, but i was at toyota today picking up camber bolts and they had an '08 yaris guide. looks like some new rear lights on the hatch, a lip kit (ugly as hell though), and not much else different.
i did notice something though, if anyone knows, the current TRD springs are red and made by eibach, but the TRD ones in the '08 guide show the same colors as the japanese ones, the deep blue shock with a white spring with sportivo on the side. thought that was intresting... anyone know how they differ from the eibach we get? i think you can check over at japanparts.com

Hi eberyone. I'm new here but have been hanging out for a few weeks now reading up on the post and what not. I've been doing ATON of research on cars in the same class as the yaris. I have a friend thats a dealer here in Long Beach, I got the brochure(sp?) for the 08 yaris, nothings changed excluding the following. BTW I'm sure this has been posted before but this is from the offical brochure.
Ground effects ( everyone calls them something different but we all know what ground effects are)
Rear spoiler, tach, tire gauge and options for clear rear lights.
BTW I'm gona be buying one very very soon. Ill be getting a 08 black liftback "S" sport in black. I plan on droping it ASAP, getting OZ wheels and tint. Ill start a garage and get more involved in this site etc once i get it.
My friend said they will have this very soon...by this week and more to come in the begening of september.

Woo! So I noticed that they put up info for the 2008 Yaris on Yahoo! Autos (autos.yahoo.com). Everything seems the same, little price increase, LB "S", blahblah you all should know all this by now, heh. But!! I noticed that a new exterior color is listed, and it's "Dark Blue Mica". They don't have a little icon of what the color looks like (it says "n/a"). I'm excited to see what the color will look like on a Yaris!
Edit: I just noticed that Dark Blue Mica is only available for Sedans. Hmm... (http://autos.yahoo.com/toyota_yaris_sedan-colors/) Good news for me though, I've been wanting the Sedan only anyway :]

First off, Liftback has an 'S' model like the Sedan now.
Second, NO change in colors, slight tweak in what's available for which grade of model. Liftback gets the same colors regardless if it's S or not, Sedan can't get Jade Sea Metallic or Olive Mist Metallic on the S model still.
Now, the juicy bits, Liftback (all types) have the following standard now:
Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
Low washer fluid warning light.
And the Liftback S (ONLY) gets the following standard now:
TACHOMETER! (N/A on non-S)
Rear window wiper. (Option on non-S)
Leather-trimmed steering wheel/shift knob. (N/A on non-S)
AM/FM/CD/MP3/WPA/Aux-Audio Stereo. (Option on non-S)
Front/side/rear lip spoilers. (N/A on non-S)
15-inch steel wheels. (14" N/A on S-models, non-S only)
Sport seats w/ fabric w/ white hemicircular and black pinstriping highlights instead of the blue stitching. (N/A on non-S)
First two pages scanned: (Last two pages only show stuff like fabric and colors, all stuff already out there AFAIK.)

For the S type hatchback, will a rear defroster be standard as well? The rear defroster is standard with the S type saloon. It would seem natural to do the same for the hatchback.
The 2008 broachure is a little vague in this area.
WolfWings
08-30-2007, 01:48 PM
Nope. I didn't list the rear defroster with the rear window wiper because it's only available with the All-Weather Guard Package. And in ALL cases, you can get the A-WG Package without the rear defroster by request according to the literature. ONLY the Sedan S includes the rear defroster and cannot have it omitted.

This wasn't "the same topic" as before I thought, as I was trying to make it easy to find the actual information directly from a Toyota publication, and a short while later I uploaded the scans of the publication.
The topic you linked to was on the main page still, and I saw it, but this wasn't meant as a part of the discussion of the 2008 model changes. It was meant as a point-of-reference providing Toyota documentation scans for the changes, since the other topic was over-crowded with speculation, ideas, hopes, and the general detritus of any long-winded textual discussion dating back almost three months at this point.

I'm guessing the 2008s won't show up for a few more months (September?), but I was hoping some info was out there regarding some prospective changes.
Why do I see many saying they hope the Yaris comes with a tach? When I bought minen a few weeks ago there were 6 hatches on the lot... they all had a tach. Is this a striped down version dealers are ordering??
WolfWings

Nope, that'd be the 2008 Yaris Liftback S-models. They ALL come with a Tach, only way to do so supposedly.
It is, bar-none, the MOST requested 'oversight' in the manual-transmission 2007 Yaris Liftbacks, according to all three Toyota dealerships I talked to when looking for my Yaris. So I wouldn't be surprised at all for the dealerships to snap up any S-model Liftbacks they can. :-)

No, just the stripped down version the U.S. gets. You Canucks get the extras because we have the Scion lineup (which in my opinion has strayed from it's strength....bringing jdm cars to our shores).

First, edit your post and remove my massive one in quotes i you could?
Second, left-hand page, right-hand column, very top entry:
Color-keyed front and rear under-bumper spoilers, side rocket panels and unique S badge: - S - S
That means N/A on non-S models, standard on S models. I'm not talking about the rear-top 'wing position' spoiler, I'm saying the 'bottom edge of the car' stuff. I always heard them called 'lip spoilers' at the auto-shops around here, compared to 'roof' or 'trunk' spoilers. Sure, you could have a 'lip style trunk' spoiler (what a Porsche 944 has for example) but a set of 'lip spoilers' basically meant lower-edge body-trim to be installed on a car, and that leaked through to my list, sorry about that.

I also have another car in the garage that is being neglected because of the Yaris LB that we purchased a month ago. It is a 2004 GT PT Cruiser. It is so horrible on gas that I dislike taking it out much anymore. It is a very nice car and I have added a lot of chrome to it, but it is hard to take it out when it takes a quarter tank of gas just to go to and from town. I am loving the Yaris more and more each day.
