I just bought a 2008 Yaris last month and I've noticed that the engine is pretty loud -- I have seen articles stating that fact but I wanted to make sure other owners have noticed this -- it is especially loud when starting (in Park gear) and when driving on the highway over 60...is this normal..?

I don't find it loud... You just need to remember this is an ECONO car not a Lexus..

The Yaris is a very light car and lacks the sound dapening of other more expensive cars.

If you find it too lound you can do a search over the sound/electronics section. There are some threads on how to improve the sound dapening by adding some sound proofing materials.

Crank up the beats and it's good. I find it's pretty normal. Compared to say a Camry, it's pretty loud. Compared to my modified bmw, I enjoy the quietness haha.

I believe this thread was started a while back, pre-hacker. Your engine compartment actually has several little hamsters in there running on a wheel. When you first start your car, they get kind of pissed off from waking up from a good nap...Then when you get to 60 mph+ they start to get pissed again because they think that their minimum wage salary is not enough to pay for that kind of hard work:biggrin:.

I'm admittedly a bit hearing challenged in the frequencies found in road / engine noise for new cars. That said, my 97 bonneville is noisier than my 08 sedan. So is my 00 durango. My 91 camry is WAY louder than any vehicle I've ever owned apart from the '72 Monte Carlo with the halfway installed, mostly leaking glass pack dual exaust stuck out from the air shock lifted back end that was raised so high you couldda painted a bullseye on the gas tank and I couldn't see a damn thing out the back windshield.......ah...that's feels good

wow, I thought it was an extremely quiet engine :eyebulge:, I guess that's what owning a jetta TDI (that didn't have a good previous owner) does to you. And well, the fact that all of our household vehicles are considerably louder doesn't help.

I can't complain, I think it's quiet as a mouse.

Everything's relative; since I had a rattling heat shield vibrating on my Swift before buying the Yaris, it's quiet in comparison, but I'd say loud compared to what I'd expect for a brand new $13k car, and a (quality) Toyota at that...

don't forget , when the automatic YARIS is started cold it remains in 3rd gear until warmed up . This may be what you're encountering . Otherwise the engine is fairly loud , there's not much insulating between the engine and the cabin . Probably due to economics . If want to tame the engine noise , you may want to start using a synthetic motor oil . Such as PENNZOIL Platinum , SHELL full synthetic , VALVOLINE , etc.. These are fairly inexpensive oils that are widely available and perform quite well . Go to DO IT YOUSELF for more input on these and other synthetics . GOOD LUCK

"Loud" is so relative.
To me, it's "loud", but I like it even louder :p

the 1nz-fe is an overall noisy engine. especially ticking noise... It's most noticable when the engine is fully warmed up and at idle. Or the overall noise it makes when it's warming up.

While driving.... the bad sound proof of the car makes road noise and engine rev very noticeable compared to other compact size or mid-size cars.

Wow, I thought it was quiet. I even installed an aftermarket Nitto exhaust just so I could hear my RPMs for shifting.

Example.
Consumer Guide rates Yaris's quietness as 4 out of 10.
Yet, it's quiet to some owners here.
That's what I mean by "loud is relative".

In Yaris, I can hear engine noise even below 2000 rpm, stones hitting under the fender, and even the rain drop.
In "quiet" cars, I hear none of those.

Well.. that's the overall quietness... I found the yaris so much quieter than my echo when i test drove it... but now.. i just want to add more sound deadening to it. I love how the corolla is quiet.. :(

I don't have a loud engine? I was glad to "know" that there is a lght "symbol" that tells me when the engine is "cold"...didn't know that!...Yaris World Forums are very informative and I appreciate everything I learn...

Make sure you actually pop the stick into "D" and not "3" like some people have done in the past  If it's in "3", it sure will be loud when driving above 60mph.

Well if the engine and road noise bother you that much, then you can always turn-up the stereo:biggrin:

All depends what you compare it to. There is engine and road noise, but remember this is an econobox, not a luxury car.

Have you driven a 09 FiT? Not bad really!

You should hear my truck. It sounds like a tractor when it idles. But I cant even tell if my dads yaris is running. Maybe its cause Im used to my truck. :iono:

+1. The only time I hear my idling engine is when it's still cold after start-up. Guess the squirrel hates being woken up

The engine in my new 09 Yaris is noticably louder than my '00 Civic hatchback when reving. At idle, it's so whisper quiet you can't even tell it running. The Civic had much more noticeable windnoise at highway speeds than the Yaris. I'm still getting to know this car. The other day I was just sitting and waiting on my wife outside Hell-Mart. I rolled down the window a bit and was amazed at how much outside noise came flooding in.

get some PENNZOIL Platinum 5w-30 while wating for the woman . Last I knew a 5 gallon jug of P.P. is $19.99 or a bit more . That'll bring the noise down a decibel or 2  .

Weird.. I thought it's way too quiet :iono:

A couple of times, I've tried to start my car after it's already on.... usually because someone calls me then I hang up and forget I've turned the key. But it's just so quiet that I can forget sometimes D: or maybe I have bad hearing

At idle, the Yaris is quiet.

When revving, it's loud. I'm not expecting Lexus quiet in such a cheap car.

Definately a quite engine at idle - Loud when the tach starts climbing. For those of us who are into sound dampening/high end car audio etc... it is really loud. I have sound dampened the whole car and the only thing really annoying is the engine.

It is true it is an econobox, but there are still some things you can do. If you can access the firewall and put some dampening or barrier mateial, it should make a big difference. There is not too much room in the engine compartment itself so another idea it to remove some of the dash(or go in from underneath) to apply some material. I am planning on doing this myself when I get the time. Look at the online manual to help you with the project.

syn it ! She'll ( Yaris ) thank you for it . Less noise pollution too .
