Build your own throttle body spacer!
hello. i'm in the process of porting a manifold and installing a 1zz throttle body. I do not like the placement of the throttle body and air flow direction so I want to add a throttle body spacer. after doing some searching I can't seem to find anything that I like so i'm making my own.
the main issue I have is that ALL the spacers I find are made from aluminum. that's ok, but aluminum can hold/transfer heat and can be pours if cast poorly. plus they are all in the $80 range. i'm making mine from a phenolic sheet in L grade. it's a "slab" made from fibers and resign that is pressed and heated to create a very good, heat resistant material. the L is for linen, which is the fiber in this block. it only comes in 12x12 sheets, so I will be using <1/4 of it. if anyone wants a piece, I will send it to you for $12 plus shipping. (it has a thickness of 1/2") i'm going to cut groves for o rings on both sides and use it as a spacer/o ring block. I will post pictures next week.... |

Sounds like a cool project. I use a Delrin gasket to deal with heat transfer with my manifolds.

Really cool project!! Looking forward to seeing the result.
For reference, here's a CAD drawing of the engine intake ports Crankyoldman made during the design phase of the "tooter" manifold. It might prove usefull. http://www.yarisworld.com/forums/sho...24&postcount=7

Hmm, i'm definitely interested in this. i'm curious if a 1/2" would make any noticeable difference in torque. I'd probably just use some RTV so make a seal as opposed to an o ring. Since I ported my intake manifold to match it with my 1zz TB I got rid of the o ring and just used RTV. If you take the time to let it semi harden then it seals itself really well.
Are you porting your manifold using the JB Weld method? If you are you'll love the results, personally it's been one of the best mods to date. I have a buddy that works for a design company and deals with auto CAD. I'm going to send him the design that Cranky came up with and see if he has the ability to make it or not. I love the simplicity of Tooter's spacer and if I can do it relatively cheap then it's a go.

does anyone have the full CAD tooter had posted for the manifold spacer? The link posted above is missing dimensions

I sent it to my buddy who deals with the stuff for his job and he said that it missing some dimensions for the gasket groove. He said he could estimate it but in the end it would cost way too much anyways to be worth while.
I was hoping he could do it in a cost effective way, guess I'll have to wait until someone is eventually selling theirs...

I have the manifold here... it's 5mm deep and 4.25mm across for the gasket-to-head.
and yea, i'm building a tb spacer, but I might build one for the runners.... humm... |

oh, I did seal up all the gaps and cut out the stock o ring land. I added jb to the outside too so I can clean up that corner on the right. i'll be cleaning it up this weekend. i'll take pictures and post them when i'm done.

Omg!! I definitly read the OP's post all wrong!! Thought you were talking about an intake manifold spacer. lol
You're in luck though!! I actually have an aluminum 1ZZ throttle body spacer on hand that I plan on using for one of my projects. I can probably make a drawing with some dimentions if you want.

I don't have the tools nor the skill to do a port matching on the intake for my 1ZZ TB so I decided to purchase a TB spacer from the seller below:

the spacer is 80mm x 80mm the flow opening is 57mm screws are....8mm? idk what the o rings are for depth as I need to purchase them tomorrow, but they will be 65-70mm, depending on what I can find. (prob something like 1 3/4")
o ring depth probably be around 1-2mm |

Will this have the same positive effect on low end torque like the manifold spacer has (assuming both spacers are of the same thickness)?

it just keeps flow up through the TB into the manifold and adds a few more cc's of available air in the manifold. if you added a spacer to the intake runners you are lengthing the intake runner and increasing the straight line velocity at the front of the head port. you would also increase the available cc's. they would not have to be the same thickness if you used both.
I hope to have it finished tomorrow so I can post pictures... |

I have finally finished.twas' a pain in the ass. it's probably just best to buy one.
this is where it'll go...duh I didn't think about the o ring, and it would be difficult to do without the proper tools. I had a tool made to cut the o ring, but it could be done with a hole saw if you were careful. cut it first, then cut the bore. it wasn't too bad I guess... |
