Junkyard, but I doubt they're plentiful yet.

I have found numerous 08 manual gauge clusters with tachs on eBay. Some of you may wanna check there too.

^^ I'm not sure if those work with the 09s though. For the amount of money is costs, I'd rather be certain it works for my car.

VERIFIED!
Swapped an '09 non-S MT w/ ABS cluster into my '07 MT *WITHOUT ABS: Gauge worked just fine, indicators were correct. *NO* ABS light either, no issues. Didn't take pictures, didn't have a camera with me, and literally took all of five minutes to do the test on my friend's lunch break (literally... he was eating the sandwich out in the parking lot at work while I did the test) so I can verify, for a fact, the gauge cluster for Liftbacks is compatable from '09 back to '07, so no reason the '08 clusters wouldn't work too. But yes, if you want the amber/red/gold look instead of the overly-blinding white/blue stuff, you can install an '09 into prior years without issue. Now... to track down an '09 S-model instrument cluster...

Long story short: You can freely swap clusters between *LIFTBACK* Yaris models, from the 2009 S-model all the way back to the 2007 stripper-model.
Previous folks verified that you can swap the cluster from a 2009 S-model liftback into a 2009 Manual non-S liftback. The S-model is an automatic, so that verifies Automatic/Manual swappability. I just verified that you can swap a 2009 MT non-S liftback w/ ABS cluster into a 2007 MT non-S liftback *WITHOUT* ABS, and that still works. This verified being able to swap a cluster with ABS hookups into a vehicle without ABS, without causing an ABS alert. It also verified that the red/amber clusters in 2009's are interchangeable with the blue/white clusters from 2007's and 2008's. Combine these two, and you can freely interchange basically all United States Liftback Yaris clusters. The connectors are the same, and 'extra' indicators don't appear to default to a fault state, they simply read 'no such device' and stay shut off. The obstacle is this: Toyota requires a VIN and current-odometer reading to ship a new cluster out, due to fears of odometer fraud because by default the cluster stores it's own copy of the odometer. The ECU also stores a copy, but the ECU can't over-ride the cluster without Toyota plugging their 'magic cables' in to re-sync them. Getting 2009 S-model clusters is the best bet for adding an OEM-style tachometer to earlier Yaris Liftbacks. Someone'll need to approach Toyota more directly than at the dealership level most likely it looks like to get these parts for those of us that want to do the upgrade, myself included.

In all my life I have never driven a manual transmission without a tach. Shame on Toyota for not including a tach. My 08 3dr MT base model came with a tach. Maybe that's because I'm in Canada??

To all those interested in swapping for an 09 "S" gauge cluster: go to Google and type in 'junk yards'. Most of the websites that are listed will have a form where you can input all the info for the part you're looking for. Be sure to specify '2009' and 'S' so you don't get stuck with an 06 cluster with no tach. Most of the junk yards responded to my parts request in less than 24 hours, either by phone or email.
Nearly every junk yard I contacted by phone and/or email had at least one of these clusters in stock for purchase and none were more than $300. Good luck! |

I just received a tach gauge cluster today from a CDM 2006 automatic model. My car is a manual, fyi. Plugged it in today and it worked without any problems. The mileage wasn't updated, but whatever. No lights came on, and there were no other problems. Not bad for $110 shipped!

Another side-effect of swapping to the '09 S-model cluster: That one has a Cruise light since the S-model also forces you to get all the power-crap IIRC.
So anyone retrofitting 'factory' cruise to their '07 or '08 may be able to get the dash-light with this swap as well. As I'm going to be 'migrating' the cruise-control stalk and what-not from my friend's '09 to my '07, I'll swap the cluster when I do that and update folks on how that works as well.

Yes, please keep us updated on that project - make a new thread for it, that would push me over the edge into buying a new cluster and cruise control kit.
