Would a cross bar and a sway bar be overkill? B/C I want to eventually put the crossbar in but I can't afford it, and I need something now b/c I dont want to damage the car.

You could put in a couple planks or something to extend the "trunk" toward the front seats. Make it like a truck bed...I was planning on doing that...

its easy.. however.. for full install, need to sawsall off a piece of car.. it does nothing.. but that lump just past the spare tire.. cant stay if u want the bottom bar..... hence y mine isnt in yet.. lol
cross plus sway isnt overkill.. 2 diff things accomplished.. cross brace helps more with rigidity. and sway helps with.. sway! lol
