New oem rear bump need priming?
I just purchased a replacement rear bumper cover from Toyota. I'm not 100% sure wether or not it needs primed before painting, sone say they do, sone say they don't because they cone "factory primed". Looks like bare plastic to me though.
When I asked the dealer, the part guy just kept saying "it plastic" and couldn't give me an actual answer. I'm asking because if it needs primered I would prefer to just do it myself to save a little $$$. Anyone have tips? Last edited by coffiend; 09-28-2009 at 05:30 PM. |

How much did it cost? Is it easy to replace?

First I would scuff up surface with 3M pad , I would thoughly wash and then use paint prep cleaner to make sure there is no oil or mold releasing agent on the part. they make a plastic adheasion promoter that should be sprayed on and then prime. next apply two coats of the color and then at least two coats of clear. I've seen good results with skipping the primer coat but you have to use the adheasion promoter. You could do with spray cans but the best results come from a spray gun.

step 1. sand with 400-600 grit sandpaper
step 2. clean surface with wax & grease remover step 3. spray plastic adhesive promoter step 4. no need 2 prime, but you can if you want but your making more work than its worth, if anything use a light colored sealer (assuming your gonna paint it the met black sand pearl or w/e its called) and spray it like you would base, speaking of base... step 5. spray 1 light coat of base, then 2-3 normal coats evenly step 6. spray 1 quick and light coat of clear, then 2-3 normal coats evenly (certified painter) Last edited by puetato89; 09-30-2009 at 12:19 AM. |

Oh and tomato, toucan get new ones From Toyota dealers for about 190.
I got a better deal on mine though through a friends small dealership discount. And yes, very very easy to install, just like te front bump : pops in and out with the removal of a few pins / screws. The new ones do not come with drill holes for plates though so I'll have to do that myself |

Thanks, man. Some !$$@!#$!@ already put some huge scratches in my rear bumper while getting out of his/her parking spot, I guess. I know it's only a matter of time until that poor bumper completely looks like shit. Grrrrrr...
Roger that on the plate holes. Good to know, thanks. |

Lol I just realized it said "tomato, toucan". It should have said YOU CAN.
My drive way is pretty much blind so I bumped into some old lady. She said she saw me backing out so "she sped up to try to beat me". And she insisted that I call 911 lol. I got a stupid ticket. This is the 2nd time I backed into something which is pretty pathetic, I've never bumped into anythinh on any of my other 6 cars.... All of which were huge. Maybe the yaris is just bad luck for me :(. It was time for a new bumper anyways, the only shitty part was the money I am using to get this all done is the money I had saved up for some new wheels :( now it looks lie I'll have to wait til tax returns * sigghhhhhhh * |
