should oil be changed in manual transmission?

Hello:

I have a 2007 Yaris with 75,000 miles and the 5-speed manual. Is there a scheduled maintenance for the manual transaxle?. That is, should the gear oil be changed at certain intervals?.

Thanks for any replies because I can find nothing regarding it.

Hmmm. Just checked my owners manual and it recommends every 48 months/64,000 km whichever comes first. 64,000 km is approx 40,000 miles. According to this, your almost ready for a second change.

If you want to maintain it to own it forever or 300k which ever comes first, I'm changing it every 30,000miles. Toyota usually recommends 60,000 mile intervals. But if you're at 75,000 and it's never been done, I'd post haste and get some fresh gear oil in there. It's really simple to do, but about $60 at the dealer. The car only hold two quarts.

highly suggest REDLINE MT-90 www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=46&pcid=7 or AMSOIL MTG www.amsoil.com/storefront/mtg.aspx if you do get gear oil changed . Both are a 75W-90 ( GL-4 ) gear oil . Don't use a GL-5 gear oil . You'll end up with grinding and more difficult downshifting . Learned this from experince with a '08 Yaris L.B. with manual tranny . Both are about $13 a quart . So $25 > $30 for 2 quarts . Takes little less than 2 quarts . May want to get gear oil done and then drain that oil out in about 1,000 miles to act as a flush and then put fresh oil in and leave for around 30,000 miles . Depending on how long you plan to keep the car . The shifting with the REDLINE becomes very smooth over time and no clunking into reverse . Cold shifting gets better as well . Hope this helps .

hmm.. didnt read that service interval. im at 80k miles and I havent done it yet. Oops

i find that the MT doesn't matter too much..... dont get me wrong it should always be done and when u are to get to it, remove the pan and clean it out, jsut wipe it down with clean papertowels, dont introduce any cleaning products (windex bad) and make sure to clean the magnets. transmission oil i find lasts a very very long time but as u go over and beyond the due date the life of the car goes down a bit.... maybe...yet to find out.

i was under the impression the factory tranny oil lasts about 120,000 km but after u change it once it must be done every 48,000 km..... lol, changed the transmission oil twice on 01 camry.... its at over 350,000 km and the first one was done at 192,xxx Km...it was a bit dirty, still kinda red..... kindaish, lol, looked like new engine oil. but if ure not gonan clean the magnets and get as much slime as possible, or dont bother.

also i have heard there is a tranny oil filter.... i have yet to see it/find it. its located inside the pan somewhere.... this might be for auto only, iunno....

my 2009 owners manual does not call for changing the manual transmission oil at all

living in a cold area though i went with synthetic (easy to do - read DIY) and it seems to help on the cold days

My owners manual makes no mention of fluid changes.

I do however have what they call an Owner's Manual Supplement - Warranty, Maintenance & Roadside Assistance Information. This booklet outlines the recommendations for all the various fluid changes.

Thanks for all the replies and the advice on the GL4 over the GL5. i will

remember that. I looked all through my owners manuals and did not see

a thing about changing manual tranny oil, but I am going to do it soon

anyway.

I am not going to no 'rip-off' dealer though. I just took my little Yaris there to

have the alternator looked at because the battery light was on, but the car

ran fine and was not discharging. they wanted to charge me $600 for an

alternator. They're nuts!!!. It was just the terminals in the voltage regulator

were a little corrosive(which is apparently common in the Yaris). I cleaned

them and it's fine now and no battery light. For those who did not know,

remember this if your battery light comes on and do not let a dealer rip you

off.

I heard its 100k mile oil.

And I wouldn't change the tranny fluid to anything else if I were you.

Do you mean do not bother changing it at all?.

I looked all through the scheduled maintenance booklet(which goes up to 120,000 miles in 5,000 miles increments) and there is no mention of changing it. It does say change the spark plugs at 120,000 though.

Mine is the same - It might have changed on the 2009's. I'll probably do it at 60K just to be safe.

I think he means anything other than Toyota OEM fluid.

I put AMSOIL GL-4 synthetic gear oil in mine at 10k. It made a huge difference in cold weather shifting. MUCH smoother.

if you want better shifting , change the gear oil out for REDLINE MT-90 or AMSOIL MTG . It's your call .
