Rough Shifting Long term effects?
Hello i have a Yaris manual and I just changed the transmission fluid... It ALWAYS shifts HORRIBLE the first 5 minutes of driving in the morning... The car jerks very hard and shakes violently And then after about 5 min its back to normal and shifts very smooth... I thought changing the transmission fluid would help but it didnt.. I got it changed at Toyota.. IM just wondering if I am damaging the transmission at all and how should i go about this rough shifting in the morning?? should i just Keep the clutch in for a long time so i can make it smooth as possible?? Am i damaging the engine at all? thanks in advance. I do have about 70k on the car on original clutch.. Maybe the clutch is bad??

During the first minutes, your idle rpm is high. So shifting wont be as smooth as warmed up.
But at what RPM are you shifting tho?

My idle is at 2000rpm when I first start up. I always shift like crap the first thing in the morning and when I leave work.

Do you mean that it jerks back and forth when you try and coast? Mine does that in 1st and 2nd, but not as bad in 3rd.
If you mean that it's hard to put into gear, then it could be that your cables are worn out. Maybe post up a video? |

Mine doesnt have the tach.. It drives me crazy haha.. But starting from a stop right when the clutch is completely let out the car shakes HORRIBLY lol and then it is fine and then shifting to second jerks the car no matter how smooth i try to make it. I feel like im damaging the engine or Cylinder heads?

Sounds like you need a new clutch.

I have similar behavior from mine, but only if I leave the trans in gear and my foot on the gas pedal. Any bumps/movement of your foot creates a positive feedback loop, making the car lurch more and more violently. The only practical way out of the loop is to push in the clutch pedal and then coast in neutral.
When I had the gearbox out this weekend, I checked the clutch out--LOTS of dust in the bell housing, but still plenty of material on the wear plate. That said, the clutch has about 40k of HARD driving on it, the last 15k or so with increased HP. Perhaps a new one is in order before next year's racing season... |

I'm fairly easy on my clutch, but even that has its limits. IIRC, trini got 448,000 miles out of his OEM clutch and yaris9876 got 403,000 miles out of his OEM clutch. I doubt I'll get close to either of those numbers.
