Bamboo goes to Chinatown (San Francisco) (part 2)
Bamboo wanted to go through the tourist shops to see if he could find a t-shirt his size. No luck today.
At the license plate shop, Bamboo looked long and hard but couldn't find one with "bamboo" on it. Bamboo bought a few postcards for the YarisWorld friends his brother told him about. Last edited by tomato; 11-22-2009 at 08:40 PM. |

Bamboo goes to Chinatown (San Francisco) (part 3)
Bamboo started to get a little hungry and decided to go deeper into the heart of Chinatown.
He seemed to know where he was going, so I just followed him. That's when I realized that not only he can speak Chinese, but he can also read the signs. Nobody seemed to mind Bamboo looking closely at the grains and vegetables. I'm pretty sure Bamboo had a little piece of chicken when the store-keeper was looking the other way. Oh, well. Bamboo goes to the dentist
It's a little scary the first time, but everything went real smoothly.
The dentist said Bamboo is doing great, and to come back next year for his teeth cleaning. |

Bamboo sees people on strike (San Francisco)
If you stay in San Francisco long enough, you are bound to see
some kind of protest or demonstration, especially in the Spring and Summer. Don't worry, these guys are usually non-violent types. The other day, Bamboo and I were was walking down Market St. (Photo #1), when Bamboo spoted some kind of disturbance on the other side of the street near the Palace hotel. There was a strike going on. (Photo #2) Bamboo never saw a newsvan before, so he got a little closer (Photo #3, #4) Last edited by tomato; 11-22-2009 at 08:42 PM. |

Bamboo in San Francisco (Famous Buildings 1)
You know how locals recognize tourists downtown San Francisco?
They're the ones walking around looking up at the tall buildings. Bamboo is no exception ... Here he is looking at the famous Transamerica building. No, Bamboo, you can't climb up there, sorry Last edited by tomato; 11-22-2009 at 11:03 PM. |

Bamboo in San Francisco (North Beach /Chinatown)
If you come to San Francisco, you'll want to visit North Beach.
You might even stop for a beer at the Vesuvio. Bamboo couldn't take his eyes off that neon sign, as you can see North Beach used to be an all-Italian neighborhood. In the last 20 years, I've seen it shrink to just a couple of blocks, and Chinatown has been expanding in its place. There are some interesting painted murals in North Beach; this one is right at the edge of Chinatown. The last shot isn't exactly a mural, but Bambo was really intrigued by this odd local custom, what do you think? Last edited by tomato; 11-23-2009 at 10:35 PM. |

Bambo in San Francisco (Famous Buildings 2)
The Bank of America building is not the tallest in the city anymore,
but probably one of those under the most scrutiny these days. Since 9.11, the security guys have become pretty strict and they usually don't like people taking pictures, even outside the building, but world-traveler pandas are friendly creatures, so they let us have one good look and a quick picture. Bamboo in San Francisco (Levi's Building)
Did you know that Levi's jeans were invented in San Francisco?
This is actually kind of a cool story of successful entrepreneurship that dates all the way back to the Gold Rush during the mid 1800's. 2 guys got together and came up with a super-tough garment for the minors, with rivets to hold it together. Later on, these garments became the Levis' many of us are still wearing today. (Check out wikipedia if you are interested in the whole story.) The original Levi's factory burned down during the great San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906, but the one that was rebuilt immediately after, still stands. If Bamboo comes back to San Francisco, I will take him up there for a visit, if you guys are interested. Last edited by tomato; 11-24-2009 at 03:47 AM. |

Bamboo in San Francisco (looks for an outfit)
Bamboo and I are continuing to look for an outfit.
We looked in the local shops, online, on the phone... The prices we are being quoted locally for embroidery jobs are insane Finally, this morning, Bamboo had an idea. I'll tell you guys about it in the thread tomorrow. In the meantime, how about a few more pics? Last edited by tomato; 11-23-2009 at 10:40 PM. |

Bamboo loves yard sales!
I'm not sure what he had in mind, but he sure was interested in those CD's.
Bamboo didn't buy anything, but Tomato found a pair of Nikon binoculars for a couple of dollars. |
