Actually
Amsoil, Redline or Royal purple is you best bet for synthetics Mobil 1, unfortunately like castrol syntec is a group III mineral oil based synthetic with a speacial blend of synthetic base stocks. But mobil 1 is still a MUCH, MUCH better oil then the dealer uses or most group I, II or III oils. Here in Ontario it's just bulk Shell oil

But if factory oil isn't good enough for a daily driven car that is babied then I'll switch to synthetic.

I'm also in the Mazda RX-8 forum ( www.rx8club.com ) , and there are some over there that are absolute nuts about debating oils, headed-up by a dude going by the name of RotaryGod. He swears by Royal Purple and nobody can dispute the merits of that oil. I loose interest kinda quickly in that topic (and I'm a mechanical engineer). I'm actually not a synthetic oil user, I use Castrol GTX. I might go Royal Purple with this Yaris though. Long (very long!) story short - regular oils work fine in normal use, but if you want even better performance, go synthetic, and if you want to go synthetic, then buy Royal Purple. That's the way I see it. |

^ Performance equating to bettter MPG.
I might try Royal Purple to see how it goes. Either that or Grape Kool-Ade! :) One benefit of using Royal Purple is that if you buy the oil and let someone else (dealer) change your oil for you, you will know they didn't switch oils on you by putting conventional oil in your car and keeping the synthetic for themselves. Check your dipstick for the purple oil. Last edited by nsmitchell; 10-02-2006 at 12:51 PM. |

Yeah, but check quickly, I understand the purple color goes away in a fairly short amount of time, then it looks like regular dino.

Just did some research on Royal Purple vs Amsoil. It looks like Amsoil is still superior. This discussion needs to go over to the Synthetic thread.

This is the best tank I've gotten so far:
435 miles / 700.48km 10.57 gallons (US) / 40.03 liters That's about: 41.15 MPG or 17.49 Km/L On this tank, I babied it big time and the results were evident. Also about 85% highway and 15% city. No A/C used. |

Sorry, not sure of your querry. What you quoted is just about the color of the oil and that has no effect on its performance / quality.
but yeah, it's real good stuff. And also, yeah, this oil stuff needs to go to that linky that nsmitchell has given above a little... |

US gallons I assume? Or imperial!
I really drives me nuts about how both systems use "gallons" but they're different measures! Ugh.. just annoying trying ot figure out which one often ppl are referring too!

I'm in SC - that's South Carolina. I realize my "location" maybe obscures that little tidbit of information to where ppl aren't sure what the SC means - so sorry. US gallons. Now, go get some sleep. :p

31MPG - Drivin' it hard on this tank, but no AC. Sprint starts and high speed driving. I need to mellow out some...

I once tried taking a trip with 4 ppl and a luggage carrier on the roof. The poor thing was really struggling, I had to floor it a lot. The darn luggage carrier really did need a roof rack, so I deemed it unsafe and returned home after about 30 miles of trying. My point being, loaded-down like that, it really is underpowered so badly, the mpg would have probably been like 20-25.

Darned luggage carriers are almost always designed to be strapped-down to a roof rack. I bungee-corded mine thru the windows, hooked inside to each other. I thought it would work, but the air pushed it back almost to the antena and the front of it made a "wall" that the air blew against. Argh, and the buffeting was getting pretty bad above 60 mph. I was extremely relieved to get it home unscathed, we threw the bags in the trunk of our 32 mpg Infiniti G20T and re-started the trip 1 hour later than expected, all the way to Kissimmee, FL. We would have been in big trouble if we didn't bail.
