What's the right way to paint hubcaps?

I want to paint my grey hubcaps black til I save up enough for some new wheels, so I was wondering, do I just sand them a little, then primer and then paint...? If not, what's the most "professional" way of doing it?

I'd sand them down stepping up(?) in grit, meaning going from coarse to really fine (not directly of course), then wash them up really good with some dish wash soap. Primer, then base coat about an hour later. Add more layers as you wish at the recommended intervals on the can. Then after letting it dry, shoot it with some clear coat.

I'd like to do this as well and I've had questions about what grit of sandpaper to use. I started to sand one of the wheelcovers but stopped after getting one section done and I thought I'd check around here and ask.

I started sanding with 150 grit sandpaper and that seemed like it was gouging the plastic a little. After using that to get the first section done, I went back over it with 80 grit and that removed the deeper marks but here's my question.

Do I need to use a lower grit paper after the 80 to get better results or am I just wasting precious calories at that point?

Thanks,

S.R.

You can just use a scuff pad for the sanding

At least you learned what 120 grit will do to a surface

Get some plastic filler from a hobby shop and fill in those gouges before sanding and painting.

I actually just did this and here is what was successful for me.

Remove Hubcaps
Wash thoroughly with dish soap
Remove the Toyota emblems if you want them to remain chrome
Scuff all of the shine off of the caps with grey scotch brite
Wash again with dish soap
Once dry, dust them with a tack cloth without touching the surface to be painted with you hands
Put a light coat of Adhesion Promoter(I use this when painting any plastic or Aluminum)
Prime
Paint
Clear coat if necessary
Glue the emblems back on (I used a high strength Resin glue)
Done

Prep prep prep prep and more prep!
Did I say prep?
That's the most important thing by far! Getting a nice clean surface so you can lay down paint nice and even.

Don't do it. Buy rims.

Ok, so I started the process, but it's been raining like hell in Puerto Rico, so, that slowed me down. I'll post pics up to what I've done, which is sanding and applying primer.

Before

During (after sanding with 3M 1000 and 600 in that order)

During (after primer)

During (all hubcaps with primer)

If the weather decides to cooperate with me, I'll soon post pics of the job finished. Its coming along pretty well I'd say...
