Stop putting premium fuel in you low compression econo box
damn it that the dumbest thing I have ever heard of...

Higer octane fuel has a higher flash point that can help reduce knock in high compression engines end of story. Anything else you have heard about running it in a engine designed to run lower octane fuel is a myth. you are not doing your engine and emissions system any good.

I thought the Yaris did have a high compression engine. 10.5:1 isn't high?

NO
Not on an engine with varable valve timing it's not where the valve timing changes for given rpms/loads.
An engine will not suffere from damage caused by detonation at low rpm.

Think about it. WTF is the point of building an econo box/and efficient fuel burning car if it requires you to run it in the most exspensive fuel at the pumps?

That's just stipid.
the lower the octane the easier it is for the fuel to ignite and the more efficient combustion will be. The only time you should ever move up to a higher octane is is you have a problem with detonation and even them only go the the highest octane needed to prevent detonation. Anything more then that can cause a loss of HP (more so in carb applications then EFI because the efi)

Most sport bike have just as high or higher compression levels and able to run regular octane with no problems. The big difference is the rpm range at which these engine operate and the lack of VVT on many of them.
A GSXR 1000 has a high compression engine (12.5:1) and can still run 87 octane for normal operating conditions and that's an engine with a redline of over 10,000 rpm.
With 87 octane the fi system had to work a little harder to keep the fuel mixture at stoich but it's still within range of ther fi system.

Another issue that allows low octane fuel to be used on a high compression engine is exhaust gas recirculation, used to control peak ignition temperature, which reduces NOX emissions.

The introduction of exhaust into the cylinder charge can be thought of as an inert dilutent, which allows far higher compression without pre ignition that would be possible on a non emission controlled engine.

Well, its wednesday, and it appears that the gas stations have gotten back into their 'wednesday bump up' swing of things. must mean we'll be around 2.15-2.30 for the next while.

last night $2.13, this morning $2.29. i found a station for the low price, wasn't really necessary as i'd only driven 158 miles...boy that feels good to fill up for $10 bucks! if they go as scheduled, tomorrow it will be back to somewhere between 2.19 and 2.24. i'll update when it happens! (note, this is a half rant because i hate how it is so predictable, and yet no, prices aren't fixed!)

edit: i decided to pick 2 weeks out to compare how much i was spending on gas (only had the yaris for 2 weeks, to be fair). between august 8-23 we spend $157.79 on gas for our Honda Element, and old Civic. between sept. 5-20, we've only spent $55.86! already put 1000 miles on the yaris too, which is on par with how much we were driving in august. $40 of that savings is probably the difference in price of gas, but i'm really happy to have a high MPG car again!

we pay roughly US$0.70 per liter here, and that's considered pretty expensive! Our neighbors down south in Malaysia get gas a little cheaper (government subsidy), but then their car prices are a lot higher (except the crappy ones from the country's manufacturers of course) ;)
