Apollo 11: 40 Years

I'm surprised nobody has posted about this (yet?) but today is the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, one of the most iconic achievements of the 20th century.

So, old timers, what were you doing when the new broke? I'm sorry I was not alive then, but I hope to watch the first human Mars landing someday

oops, picked the wrong picture out of the bunch. There were four that were to go with the Apollo 15, 16, and 17 and one for parts.

It was big news. They carried it live. People around the world watched. For days the lead story in the news paper was about the moon landing.

I always wonder at the fact that 5% of the US population still doesn't believe that the moon landing took place, and that it was all staged (maybe in Area 51!). I mean, there are cynics, then there are cynics...

Your modern existence maybe quite different without America's commitment to go to the moon. There was advances in technology that may not have occurred or may have come much later: electronic miniaturization, computers, space age metals, fire suppression and yes, space ice cream.

Who knew we had so many astro-physicists, rocket scientists and radiation specialists at YarisWorld! I'm speaking of the conspiracy theorists of course.

It was the firstirst time I ever got high on anything illegal. We got completly stoned out of our brains and went outside, looked at the moon and tried to see the astronauts......Many, many sober moons have passed since then, been ztone cold sober since the week thatJerry Garcia died, in '95.

It is truth. I expect there are a couple thousand people in this country who could honestly say the exact same thing..

If it surprises you that a larger-than-normal contingent of Yaris owners think we didn't go to the moon, you haven't been here long enough.

I see. So the level of education you received regarding cosmic radiation in science class is sufficient enough to have qualified you to work for NASA and indeed to be considered one of the foremost authorities on the subject? Impressive to say the least. Wow, I have a few questions for you.

How long must someone remain within the Van Allen belts to receive a lethal dose of radiation? Does the equation take into consideration the natural fluctuations of said radiation? For example, how long one could safely remain there during nominal and peak periods of cosmic and solar radiation?
