Exactly... I don't understand why some people are so adement about the filter magnet. This is cheaper, as effective, you can see the results, and diagnose major problems before they occur.
For $15, why not install one? |

They are very powerful and they just snap right on the your filter. Use as many as you like.

How many magnets would be enough for this?

Actually
I did get it off of Ebay. Why its offset, I dunno. As for the question about what was on it, it was just a lil grey paste, so to speak. No chunks of anything. It was just to show you guys that a hi quality filter still cannot filter all the microns. $10 bucks off ebay...Jus do it...

Free as in "got them free outta a hard drive" or
Free as in "hanging free, stuck to the drain plug." I've never heard of this idea but I have to say I think it's brilliant. Stray metal is death. I'm gonna do this as soon as I figure out how-to-safely or just burn $10 on Ebay. Yarisworld rocks!

Why are you using Mobil1 EP on an engine still under warranty? Even Mobil1 states on their site not to go the full 15,000 miles if the car is still under warranty....using EP is a waste of money if the engine is still under warranty...I would not go more then 5,000 miles between changes for warranty reasons...switch to Mobil1 0w-20 or 5w-20 and go no longer then 5,000...just my suggestion....

Is it normal for the magnet to be offset like that?

That is a lot of metal shavings for one oil change. Was it more like a metallic paste or were there any hard pieces attached to the magnet?

That magnet is way off center on the plug. Is it a DIY project?
Got mine on Ebay for $10 myself. I'll be sure to post a pic when I do my next OC. |

Why not let the oil filter capure the particles - it is there for this reason. If you go around a tight corner at high rpm you could make a tornado in your oil pan and this debris would get swept off and start circulating - our timing chain can pump this stuff up top - another problem chain vs timing belt. Is you chain noisy whirrring noise?? this is a lot of debris.

My brother the bike mechanic says metal parts would come from rings, bumpstick and crankshaft. I like the bumpstick and the crank:0
