Yaris Pricing Question

Hello, everyone. You seem to be a knowledgeable bunch, so I'll put this to you.

I'm a college student about to purchase my first car. My mother and I went to the dealership today to look at what they had to offer, concentrating specifically on the Yaris Sedan (regular type, not S). We were determined not to be roped into buying anything without having some time to go home and discuss it, but the salesperson did sit us down to run some numbers with us. (I seem to have misplaced the sheet, so some numbers will be approximate.)

They originally quoted a full price of something like $17,300, which included the the $1500 discount Toyota is currently offering, but also the "Appearance Package" (~$500) and the custom Toyota floor mats (~$250). We opted out of both of the latter. Because I'm soon going to graduate college, they told us about the extra $400 discount they could throw on--as long as we financed through them. But because we were planning to pay for any car I purchased in full at the outset (and this is out of my own scant student funds, so it's a big consideration), we told them that the discount was appealing, but that we definitely didn't want to finance.

So they called in another guy, the hardballing financial specialist, who started asking me slightly smarmy things like, "How can I make this work for you?" He offered the equivalent of the college discount ($400) to me even if we paid in full on the day of purchase. Without the extraneous options we struck off the list and with the consequent change in sales tax, we seemed to get a final offer of $16,000 even.

This would be for a Flint Mica 2009 Yaris Sedan 4-door automatic with power windows and locks, cruise control, no floor mats, no window tinting.

My question is, do I go back and take them up on it, or is it worth steeling myself to haggle a bit more? I realize that with the $1500 discount, I'm already getting a better price than I normally would, but as far as the salesmen are concerned, the only part they've personally lowered is the $400 without the need for financing. Am I getting a good price, or would I be a fool to pay?

We have to make a decision about a car by about Wednesday (March 11). I'm still going to shop around other dealerships a little more in the coming days, but I really like the Yaris, and wouldn't want to pass up a good offer.

Go to this page and build your own package and see if the dealer is giving you a good deal.

I would suggest keep trying to haggle... go to other dealers, or at least email other ones. If you're feeling brave tell them you got a lower price somewhere else.. (even if you havent...) see if they'll go lower. If they don't, just leave, and come back a few days later and say it didn't work out or something. But I have a feeling they'll believe you got a lower price and try to match it ;)

Its for a hatchback and with different options then you want, but my lowest price through speaking with a few dealers is about 15800 (including taxes, closing fees and without the rebate).. but check out the thread because other posters gave me some general advice, tips, etc that might help you too. I bought my 2009 base sedan in December and paid $15,800 plus tax/title/license. That was way too much, in my opinion, and didn't include any kind of discount from Toyota. It has the power package, cruise control, and floor mats. Per NADA, the MSRP on a 2009 auto base with those options is only $13,765.

I would offer them $14.5k out the door and see what they can do. They are still making money at that price, and if you're willing to walk out they will most likely cave. I got up three times and threatened to leave, and that was financing through the dealership. If I was paying cash, I would say, "Look, I can walk in here tomorrow with a check for $14,500, or I can take my check to Other Dealership. It's up to you whether you want the sale or not."

Your responses have led me to wonder just what features they've stuffed on this thing that are making the MSRP so expensive in the first place, if it's hiked up that much with the discount included. There is another dealership a little farther away that I might visit, better-informed, to see if I can get a less expensive offer from them. I also need to make sure to ask each place for a print-out detailing exactly what they've stuffed into the car and the price these extras would ostensibly cost me.

That's the thing. I don't see what that car could possibly have that mine doesn't. I have keyless entry, power windows/locks/mirrors, CD with mp3 compatibility.... All the stuff that a base sedan could possibly have. There is no reason that those things should add that much to the price.

The prices they throw at you are far from reality - the finance guy showed me an "official" Toyota invoice that said their invoice price was $15,800. I told him I could easily print off an invoice on a piece of Toyota letterhead and name any price I wanted. They can tell you anything they want with no repercussions.

Also, make sure they aren't throwing in prepaid maintenance, extended warranty, and gap coverage to get that total. I had to cancel my extended warranty because they added it in without my knowledge. The dealership charged me $1900 for a warranty that costs about $400. They tell you that if you don't extend the warranty at time of purchase, you won't be able to get one later. Totally untrue. You can get the extended warranty at any time before your original warranty expires. With the prepaid maintenance (at $2200), they told me I would void my warranty if I had my oil changes done anywhere other than the dealership. Also untrue. Gap coverage isn't always a bad thing, but they wanted another $2000 for that and I can get it through my insurance company for about $200.

They will find any way they can to screw you. Make sure you know exactly what you are being charged for before you sign ANYTHING.

Watch out for closing costs (tax, licensing fees, etc) and last minute add ons. They got me with a last minute add-on (keyless entry / car alarm) which I probably could have gotten done some place else for half the price. Didn't know any better

I pulled the trigger on the Yaris! I paid 15,600 out the door for convenience package, all weather package, power package, floor mats, keyless entry, and spoiler. I think I did pretty good with the deal.

Nice. How much did the tax/title/license bring the total to?


I got my 2door LB two weeks ago for $14,700 out the door (tax/title/etc included).

My mom decided to get one too.... lol she got one a few days ago for $14,473 out the door

Always talk "out the door price." It's very easy to add on other items after the cost of the car. If you want the $400 off for dealer financing, take it and pay it off after you get the car.

If you doubt the price, you can go to another dealer and start all over and see what they offer.

$10,700 for a mint '08 metalic silver sedan with less than 8000 miles. I have to roll the windows up myself, but I for the 5k+ saved, not much problem there. I added cruise for about $200.

Look for a cherry used car...pay 1/3 less....

If this will help anyone, here's the deal I helped my son get on his Yaris. I'm not saying it was a "killer deal," just putting this out as information that may help other buyers.

As you can see, the sticker was $16,514. We got the dealer to come down to $200.00 over invoice, which lowered the price from $16,514 to $15,755. Yes, we were shown the invoice. Toyota contributed the $1000 rebate, bringing the price down to $14,755.

Of course, there was the "rip-off fee" that all dealers charge and call the "processing fee," or some other name. In this case, it was $199.50. Sales tax was $885.30, and license and transfer fee was $35.00.

I really like the option package that this car had. OK, my son could have done without the $150 carpeted floor mats, but they do look really nice, and the word "Yaris" is stitched into the fabric in the corners, which is pretty classy.

I think this will be a great little car, and I have the itch to get one for myself, but my Cobalt is only about nine months old, so it is not a good time for me to be trading. Besides, I do like the Cobalt a lot.

Hey, you live really close to me! I'm in Muhlenberg County.

Anyway, I can see Hudson is doing the same thing the Hopkinsville dealership did to me. Yes, they showed you a piece of paper that said "Invoice" at the top with a Toyota logo, but is it a real invoice? Nope. Invoice price for a new base sedan is about $14,500.

You still got a good deal, though.

Hi, Twit! I am also in Muhlenberg County! COOL!

What I posted was just a copy of the window sticker, not the invoice.

According to Emunds.com, the invoice price would have been $15,386 without the carpeted floor mats and the bumper protection. For some reason Edmunds does not show those options when you price a Yaris with options. So, if Hudson was showing me $15,555 as invoice, they were probably being honest.
