dealer fee's?

I'm searching for a new car for my mom because there are no good deals on used cars in the area and you might as well take advantage of low to no finance rates. My question is can you negotiate on the dealer fee and delivery charge? most dealers around here charge 399 for a "documentation fee" and 799 for delivery charge. She is seriously thinking about a base kia soul does anyone have experience with those?

As far as the Kia Soul goes, my mom just got one back in December and she loves it. I've driven it a few times and great visibility, plenty of pep(more then my Yaris) and excellent 4 wheel disc brakes. So far, very happy with the Kia Soul.

Delivery fee? Probably not.

However, all the other tacked on fees are absolutly negotiable and are only designed to increase dealer profits.

Example: When I bought my Yaris, a dealer prep fee was initionally added on.
The salesman told me "it's nessary to get the car customer ready"
I countered with "you want me to pay you to make shure that car is OK to sell me? I don't think so"!

The fee was eliminated.

Don't ever forget that when you buy a new car, it is always a buyers market and don 't fall for the dealer fees BS!

I remember in Florida that dealer doc fees were not regulated by the state, were as much as $699, and were often non-negotiable... which doesn't mean you can't try. Of course, the doc fee is simply profit for the dealer. Thankfully, here in California, the doc fee is state regulated and set at a fixed non-negotiable amount of just $45.

The vehicle delivery fee is non-negotiable.

Of course you can negotiate.
Far too many people just roll over and play dead when it comes to these phony fees and that is what they count on.

You simply have to call their bluff and be prepard to walk out if nessary.
Believe me, they wiil call you back quicker than you can say "ripp-off"!

I assumed by "delivery fee" of $799 you were referring to the vehicle transportation fee (often referred to as delivery fee) which in fact is not a dealer fee. The transporatation fee is never, ever negotiable.

The ridiculously high unregulated vehicle doc fees that the Southeastern states charge (and should be illegal) are seldom negotiable per se in Florida, for example (at least from my experience). You're generally going to see the doc fee on the contract at full pop. However, you can indirectly reduce the doc fee by negotiating the price of the car very close to or below factory invoice.

you can always say "i'll pay that price if you include an extended bumper to bumper warranty to 100k miles, free tires for life, free maintenance, and free towing services."

there are 4 teirs to a price on a car.

there's retail. the highest price unless there are just so few cars out there (like camaro when it first came out).

list, which is about 500-1000 lower than retail and it's to make you feel fuzzy if you're bickering about price.

cost, which is what you get if they offer a military, government, employee or other 'discounts' to the vehicle when you purchase.

and there's another one i forget the name of, but it's basically what the dealership pays for the vehicle, including all transport, setup, cleaning, inspection and all other 'fees' associated. and they still add 600 to the top plus all TT&L fees...

i worked as a salesman for a bit at a local chevy dealership here. they had a truck, decent 1500 chevy with leather, external plus and internal plus and a 'texas edition' which is a 5.3l with 20" rims basically. the 'retail' was 36000 and the 'list' was 34,500. a guy came in and his exact words to my sales manager was "this is my first stop, and i'm going to the other dealers in the area next. i want you best price for this truck with these option." manager says ok, and gives him a price of 26,500. plus another 3500 in rebates from chevy. so that's 23000 for a truck 'priced' at over 10 grand more than what was sold for.

AND THEY'RE STILL GONNA MAKE MORE THAN 1000 IN PROFITS OFF THE THING!!!!!!!
