First time I saw this mod was about 6 years ago on a Sienna forum. It was done the first day I brought the van home in 2004. It was also the first mod I did to the Yaris as well.

I could've sworn I learned about this mod on this forum, it was one of the first things I did to my Yaris when I got it...

My Yaris can already do that, my cover doesn't come with the tab from factory. I wonder if it's a 06-08->09 change, or due to region differences.. but nice work Garm!

One note on doing this - Watch out when you wash your car. I have now poked myself in the eye three times while washing the car with the wiper flipped outwards.

COULD it be to stop turbulence from allowing the wiper to be lifted up at highway speeds? Just a thought that ran through my head

i dont think there is enough turbulence in that area being so close to the body and in the "bubble" area to lift the wiper

Good point.

Personally, I have mixed feelings about this mod.
When the wiper arm swings out you have to be carfull the wiper blade assembly doesn't disengauge from the arm.
I suspect that this is the purpose of the "tab".

1. removing the base cover every time is inconvenient, and eventually the cover will become worn and will fall off. I'd rather do a simple, free mod and have no more problem.

2. I've never been "careful" about the wiper blade assembly, and on the three cars we have with the mod, it's never disengaged.

CTScott, I think it's a safety concern for Toyota, as you've pointed out.

There isn't. 6 years on our Sienna and 1 month on the Yaris. Perfectly simple mod that causes no ill effects.

Yeah, I've had mine like that for almost a year and a half and it hasn't been a "safety issue." As a matter of fact, every hatchback I've owned has had the ability to lift the wiper off of the rear glass; which is why I found it odd that the Yaris didn't and discovered this easy mod to fix that!

About the only issue it's caused me is forgetting to put the wiper back down after cleaning the car!

Cheers! M2

if it's a safety issue, a highway speed issue, or whatever, why is this tab present only in North American cars? Mine has a variable geometry wiper arm-enabling cover (gotta make it sound fancy) from the get-go.

Sounds to me like another consumer protection thing, after all, if an erudite member like CTScott pokes himself in the eye with the wiper, someone would find a way to sue Toyota for it....
