Its been 1.5 weeks since i started driving the yaris and driving stick...

and I am proud to say....

I have not stalled out in 3 days....even in bumper to bumper city traffic on a slight uphill incline.


I have an 08 3dr hatch in meteorite metallic and I love it. The clutch made me nervous every time id be at a stoplight with a lot of people behind me for the first few days. I used to drive an 06 Ford Ranger with an auto transmission. Going from the truck to the yaris was interesting...being blown all over on the highway was fun...

Congrats on the Yaris. I considered a manual when I bought mine but I was too scared, haha. I have only driven manual once and it didn't go well.

yeah definitely. The first week i had it i wasnt confident at all...thinking about not stalling in traffic led to me stalling in traffic...lol. But once you get the hang of it, its really easy!


I must have burnt the clutch 2 or 3 times in the first week too >.<

I guess everybody knows the old trick of setting the parking brake if you're stopped on a slope to keep from rolling backward, then letting it off as you start to let the clutch out? When you get used to it, you don't need the parking brake anymore.

thats a great way to learn, Ill still do it if the incline is really steep.

yeah ive been trying to utilize that trick. It helps, but i stalled out once when i didnt release it fast enough >.> haha


I just have one irritation when driving. When on a minor incline (not needing to use the handbrake trick) and someone pulls right up to my rear bumper...how am i supposed to engage and not roll back into the car behind me ?? its annoying sometimes... and every time someone does it...its usually some girl with huge sunglasses on and usually on the phone .

I hear ya!!! It took me a while to get used to the clutch (city traffic was the worse!) and I've been driving MT's for a long time! You're doing real well and you should be proud!!

I still do it. Some of our San Francisco hills are really, really steep.

Keep using the e-brake. Most drivers have no clue and won't give you any room to roll back. I'd rather use the e-brake than get into a minor collision and see my insurance rates go up.

I usually let my car roll back when I see someone coming up behind in that situation. When they see you roll, they stop shorter, usually. I have never had it make things worse. Yet...

They have different purposes. Truck doesn't make any sense as a daily driver unless you're a contractor maybe. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to be hauling a horse trailer or anything like that with my little Yaris

2 completely different vehicles!

Keep using that e-brake uphill until you feel more confident, it's better than riding the clutch I think.

So do I. Here in Incline Village there is an intersection with a long light on a steep grade, and it's a rather tight spot so folks tend to pull up close on your tail. So close that I don't trust the throttle lag and use the parking brake to get going.

Thanks for the input guys. On friday ill get some pics of the car freshly washed and waxed. I actually used to be a car wash freak with my truck...

those are really old pictures...i think i may have used MS paint to resize them. Im on a mac now, so id probably use a program called Gimp (pretty much a free photoshop).

Oh yeah...I host my pics on photobucket, they also have an option to auto resize the pics for avatars, forum posts, blog posts and etc etc. The option is right there when you load the pics up.

just a tip....wax in straight lines. Meteorite gets a very good shine when you apply sealant using an OB.
