my gauge install [updated pics 6/25]
I got the gauges in place, will post more pics when I finish the wiring this week. The cutting was scary and tedious, but I think worth the "OEM" look I wanted. These are Glowshift gauges - tach, voltmeter, and water temp:

Hey with the Tach installed, how many RPM's are you getting? What are the idling RPM's? I installed an Evil 2 inch Tach in the same spot and it has a jumper on the back and I can either choose a 4 cyl., 6 cyl, or just use no jumper and all three give me different readings. I'm not sure which one's accurate. Let me know if you know :)

RPMs when the car is warmed up and idling should be 600-800RPM

Excellent work... I was thinking about doing the same with a tach only.

Great install!
How does the inside of the dash compartment look like now? Do the cables get in the way?

Not wired up yet, but the last pic shows the gauges from the inside...I'll do a nice little harness so the glovebox can still be used..

Nice. How does it look at night. And what is the glare like with no shade over the gauges?

It would look tons better if it was angled toward the driver instead of sitting flat and flush against the glovebox cover.

not too much of an angle from where I sit behind the wheel, they are perfectly readable. Mounting at an angle would not be possible without some custom fabrication -- maybe later!

ok so here's a few night shots, sorry for the crappy photography. I'll take some with a tripod and post up again. The needle is always red, the background color is changeable. There's a mode where it constantly dissolves from color to color, which will be cool for shows.
[Note: If you're going to race, don't buy these gauges, they are really cheap, the scale is completely useless and they are slow to respond. Autometer FTW. Just so you know.] All red: White background: Blue background:

are those difficult to read at that angle? or would they be easier to read if they were straightened out?

they are easy enough to read, how often do you need to know how many volts you're running, etc. No glare problems - I can only think of one angle where the sun might bounce off.
Yes, pointing them more horizontally would be better -- but it's a LOT more work, IMO. I'll get to that later, probably will require some fabrication to make it look pretty. However, the range on these gauges is just plain stupid: voltmeter: goes to 19 volts? tach: goes to 11,000 rpm? water temp: goes to 350 degrees? The fact that only a portion of the gauge range is useful to me in this car is much more of an issue than the angle at which I mounted them.

Perfect.
Summit, JEGS, etc. all sell little angled collar's you slip in before the gauge. They come in a few different size angles as well. I think it looks perfect flush fit like that. |
