Lightweight Flywheel for the Yaris?

What options are currently out there?

Would anyone be interested in a very high quality lightweight option from NST?
Price would probably be in the neighborhood of $350-$400 and weight reduction would probably be about 35%.

Should we plan to move forward with pursuing something like this?

Fidanza makes one for us, I have it in my car. They are about $300. Go for it, Mike, and let me test it. I'll probably drop the trans anyway to put xB gears in soon.

Can you make us a gear set too?

YES! In fact, we build custom pulleys all the time. Please feel free to look for me on AOL Instant Messenger at the screen name "NSTonAIM" or give us a call at 281-917-0221 should you wish to chat about a custom pulley.

For everyone else... please keep the discussion going regarding flywheel options...

It is a matter of rotational mass. Most of what a flywheel does is providing inertia to keep things running in between cylinder firings. With a heavy flywheel, you get smoother operation, because of increased rotational mass carrying more inertia, BUT it takes longer for the engine to run up to speed, and it always has to be doing more work to keep the mass of the flywheel spinning. If you lighten the flywheel, you make it easier for the engine to spin up to speed, but also remove some of the smoothness of operation, especially in cars that are use primarily for street driving. When you let off the power, the engine will drop down in speed faster. This can lead to herky-jerky (a highly technical term ) operation. It is a balancing act when weighting the flywheel, you want it heavy enough to be smooth, but light enough to provide responsive performance.

Flywheel for the xA/xB/Echo = Flywheel for the Yaris

Clutch components are also interchangeble

I've only driven one vehicle with a lightened flywhee--a Ford Focus--and the difference was amazing. The flywheel on the Focus, however, is uber heavy, so the lightweight version was very pronounced. I wonder what it'd be like on the Yaris?
