I visited my local dealer today to check out a Yaris. I had been talking with one of the staff by email about the cars and also about the TRD dealer installed options. I played off of the fact while there that I am on a waiting list for dibs on an orphaned smart car (which I am), and that I had other cars in mind as well. I even went as far as to have the salesman drive the car while I just rode in it to show that I am only somewhat interested (which is true).

Black 2-door automatic Yaris
with only the "all weather guard package" ($110)

TRD sport muffler
TRD performance air filter
TRD rear sway bar
TRD lowering springs
($978 according to toyota.com)

So later today I got a phone call with a quote:
The car around $14000 + $2000 for the TRD addons

So a total cost would be around $17,200 out the door.

While I understand and a bit expected the dealer installed addons to have expensive labor, over $1000 for some pretty basic addons is excessive. I'm a software developer and don't make nearly that rate! Let's just say if they took 10 hours to install (unrealistic), that would be $100/hr rate... I wish I made $100 and hour!

You would think there would be some type of agreement on new cars to have these addons installed on new cars for a subsidized rate.

Your thoughts? Doesn't seem like a deal to me at all.

I told the salesman I would think about it.

I really like the fact that TRD addons are warrantied from the dealer. It was also a reason I took a closer look at the Yaris when I visited toyota.com and configured one on the site. I realize that I can do those mods it myself, but if something breaks I will inevitably have to fight the dealer to prove that my mods didn't cause the problem.

Thanks in advance for any feedback you guys provide.

you can get a new Scion for that

I would go tell that dealer to go f@!k themselves

My 07 hatch I had was basicly the same thing, and they are selling for around $12-13k
If they did $14k out the door, I would think about it

Thanks for the info.

12k-13k for an auto with addons? That must have taken some skillful tactics to get that much off the msrp.

Most of the time I was talking with them, say said usually they only do around $300 off MSRP on Yaris because it is a "hot seller" right now.

I was also told $300 off MSRP is typical for the 09 sedan by a salesman at the dealer. He said they don't make much profit on the small cars, especially the Scions since they have up front pricing. He mentioned that there might be some wiggle room on the options since they are already installed and some people may not want them all.

When someone here says they paid $x under MSRP, are they factoring in options/accessories too? I am in the market for one but I am not sure what a fair price is (considering the auto 09 S with power that I really want is the same price as a Corolla).

Just as a comparison, i can get a 09 hatch RS 1.8ltr drive away for $26,900.NZ
which is about $13,100.US

you guys are getting stung ,real hard.
car yards are crying out for sales , play hard ball.
thats my 2 cents worth.

$100 dollars an hour for labor seems like alot, but most mechanics I know are charging $65-$80. For a dealership $100 isn't surprising.

IMO that 'quote' is a starting point. If you don't like it, make your own offer.
If they don't take it, walk away and go somewhere else. Any more screwing around than
that and you are playing into their hands.

How long would it take to install them?
My guess is 3 hours.
That's $340/hr!!!
If it takes 5 hours, then $200/hr.
I would ask them $1000 less than that. Like $300 less than MSRP on the car and $700 less on the installation.

They emailed a few days ago. I told them I would buy right now for $14500 out the door, but otherwise I decided to wait a few more months until I have enough cash to buy something without financing and for more time to research exactly what car would be best.

They didn't respond, so the offer must have been completely unreasonable. haha

Have fun (not) dealing with dealers! After going through a few bozos, I found a standup dealership that made it relatively painless, but am so glad that ordeal is behind me now...
