possible problem with heavy shift knob and ssk
My brother is a mechanic, and im not saying that i believe everything he says, but hes usually pretty good when it comes to cars and what not. He said that using a heavier shift knob with a short shift kit can be bad for your transmission?
anyone heard anything like that. Im gettin the m1 abrhams shift knob from tmw, is their gonna be a prob using it with NST's kit? |

the answer is no..
you'll break a shift cable before you ever harm your transmission.. unless you're shifting like an A-Hole everywhere you go.. but you could damage your trans that way with stock shifter and knob

A heavy shift knob will not damage your transmission, as well as a short shifter will not damage it either. The shifter is so isolated from the transmission with the plastic shift assembly, shifter cables and different bushings that the extra weight has no impact on the transmission.
Make sure the clutch is fully depressed when you shift and until the gear is engaged, that's the way to go even if you are on the stock shifter and shift knob. Frank TWM Performance |

I have a TWM weighted knob + SSK = PERFECT COMBO.
NO issues in over a year of all kinds of driving. Same combo (TWM knob + stage II kit) on my tC, same thing.

I think that myth probably stems from some people not depressing the clutch enough/fast enough with a ssk and/or a heavy knob, and wearing out their syncros.
Just like everyone else has said, if you depress the clutch all the way (and fast enough for the shift) you won't have any damage. |

I have 400g weighted shift knob paired with my SSK. It's been well over a year now, and not a problem in sight.
Infact, the weighted shift knob will help you improve shifting due to it's heavier weight. It's like pushing on something that's already rolling.

I think your bro might be referring to having additional weight on the shift lever, which'll has a possibility to cause the shifter to lean in a different spot, which'll cause unexpected wear on the gears, since you can possibly force a different resting position for the stick.
As far as the SSK, there have been debates. The quicker shifting would cause the syncros to work overtime or something. blah blah blah blahhhhhhh. |

I can see it damaging.
If you shift faster than you can fully engage the clutch.

the quicker shifts can make it so that you try the next gear before the synchro's line up fully.....if you always shift fast it can lead to premature synchro wear
i had a twm shifter on my xrs....was pretty notchy and shifts were wickedly short.....but if you bang thru the gears all the time like i did, it can make your synchros wear out (keep in mind though, that the xrs trannies already have notoriously bad synchros). OEM shifter felt like butter when i eventually took out the TWM unit. i plan on leaving my yaris shift stock.

Btw, I take offense to your Chuck reference. Nobody is stronger than chuck. ... they say that Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door. |
