I decided to finally learn to drive a stick shift just so I can have fun with a 2007 Liftback manual transmission ! Everything I have erad says the auto transmission is sluggish on the Yaris and the stick is more fun! Wish me luck!@

You'll get a bit frustrated the first stalls, but you'll pick it up fast, and with some practice, you'll be able to drive without any issues.

I can't make a comparison (I've never driven a stick in my life), but I can tell you that I have no complaints about my automatic sedan.

This car was my 1st stick. I don't recommend learning during your daily rush hour commute, like me ;) (Yes I'm an asshole).

IMO it's actually trickier because of the electronic throttle. I find the gas pedal has little "weight" to it. You actually have to get a feel for the gas too. Or maybe it's just me. I found it easier to get a feel for the pedals after taking off my shoes & driving around in socks. It's also good practice to get the car moving by only using the clutch.
I've got it down now, but my downshifts aren't always as smooth as I want them to be.

word of advice is to not worry about the gas pedal so much... try learning the feel of the point of friction on the clutch... that's the most important thing about it.... the rest of it will come with practice...

I've never driven anything but stick shift cars. You get better gas mileage and you drive the car. Once you get the hand of it it'll become second nature and you'll love the experience.

Same shit here! Ive always wanted to learn and be able to drive stick, so I told myself, when you buy this car (my first), its gonna be stick.

I wanted to learn and this was the best way, buy a car that was. So glad I did.

So much fun with it (though NOT in stop and go traffic nightmares... thats still SO ANNOYING... really gets to me... damn the 400 and 401 sometimes!)

Stick around town is wicked, what a blast... I test drove an auto, had no complaints about the way it drove, but hte stick drive is much more fun!

Dont regret it for a sec, and its all a piece of piss now! No problem to do

Same story with me. Never drove a stick, wanted to for the yaris.

Went to the dealer and told him I can't drive stick but want one. So he's like well I'm not going to take you out on an auto if your not gonna buy it.

He was cool enouph to take me out in a new corrola and beat the shit out of it in this parking lot. It was pretty hard to figuer out at first. It took me like 10min in the parking lot just to get any idea as to wtf I was doing...

But he tought me to drive standard, so he got my sale. But then had to wait 3.5 months for my car of choice to finaly arrive...

Pulling out of the parking lot right when I got the car, I stalled out and couldn't get the damn thing going....

Make sure your not in 3rd when you at a stop and go to pull out into traffic

but now 2 weeks later, I'm sooooooo glad I got the stick, I love driving again as if I just started

I dunno, thats an *interesting* stance/attitude for him to take if you ask me.

I told my guy I was gonna end up buying a stick but since i cant, therefore ill take out an auto to see how the Yaris itself feels... to to get good impressions of hte interior, plus impressions of the car as I drove it!

After my Van died

sniff I miss it. Anyway after that I swore I would get a manual for my next car...unfortuantly I didn't have the time to dick around with it, cause I was in school and I had to work and I needed a car fast as my dad was preasuring me to get a car cause he was tired of depending on me. So I have an Auto

But despite that sometimes it pretty "peppy" even for an auto, and yes its traits come through and some days its pretty sluggish, its almost like if the car has feelings-meaning you know how you have engergy some days and others you feel sluggish, its like my car, wierd I know but oh well! But I swear my next car manual!!!!!!!
My dad has an 03 Miata and thats a stick so I've gotten some practice on it. Enough of my novel.

I've personally had no issues with the auto for picking up speed. I've noticed the gearing jerks a little when I take my foot off the gas to slow down (I avoid breaking as much as possible when not coming to a complete stop) but after my 98 escort, the feel of it is a lot smoother. I think for my next car, I'll get myself prepared to drive a manual. There's way too many traffic lights around me though so I think I will probably still go with another auto.

I noticed that too when I drove the auto. Id let up on the gas (to coast) and it was like i lost a lot of forward momentum... never experienced that dramatic, noticeable slow down when taking my foot off the gas before... in all other vehicles ive driven, its a gradual thing that u lose speed

i dunno if taking my foot off the gas caused the vehicle to drop down a gear or something (it was similar i guess to when ud engine break in a manual), but it happened all the times i did it, so i find it hard ot believe that in every case when i removed my foot off the pedal to coast, that i would have been at a speed where the car would downshift

It's not down shifting it engine braking.
And yes with the yaris is has a lot of engine braking but that's good
it saves fuel and saves wear and tear on the brake system.

I'm thinking about doing the same. I just got a call from my local dealer to inform me that they have a bayou blue liftback, manual, WITH the power package. As I've read here on the boards, these are vvvvvvveeeerrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyy hard to come by. The thing is, I can't drive a stick! I'm more than willing to learn, but I'd hate to beat up a new car. I'm going to go see the car in a bit. Should I take the plunge?!
