November 2009 Yaris Sales

November wasn't a terrible month for the Yaris. Sales were down 14.9% from 11/2008. Total sales are at 58,726, holding the Yaris in fourth place in sales among other subcompacts.

1. Nissan Versa 79,097
2. Hyundai Accent 63,937
3. Honda Fit 62,745
4. Toyota Yaris 58,726
5. MINI Cooper 41,736

Versa sales boggle my mind. It's ugly and has the most documented programs among small cars. I think people must see it as the most car for money (size and features).

I wonder how that list correlates to sticker price.
Here in Canada Yaris is more than Versa and Accent with Fit and Mini higher priced.
I'll guess in the US that Fit is cheaper than Yaris which might explain that ranking in this economy.
Anyone shopping lately that can confirm?

Not sales numbers but observation. In my town I see;
1) Accent (by far cheapest price)
2)Versa (large)
3)Yaris (Toyota Quality, conservative buyers)
4)Mini (novelty, BMW wannabe's?)
5)Fit (overpriced, same as middle package Civic with similar gas mileage)

Mini and Fit might interchange. Perhaps Mini's just stand out more.

i was going to trade in my 3 door for a 5 door

they didnt even want to deal with the price, it was like you pay this or no deal so I left

i only owe like 2500 left on the 07 so i think im just going to keep it, not worth the extra years of car payments

The Fit in America is more expensive than the Yaris but the Honda name is just held in very high regard, moreso than Toyota, and so people are willing to pay that extra penny to get a "Honda"

I've had 2 toyotas and a honda before, and I can say all were very nice cars.

I love fits too, but there's something about the Yaris that makes me wanna buy another one as a DD

In the states tho, most toyota dealers are stupid, and the way they deal with customers is terrible for the most part, so since i can afford the extra cash for a fit, why should I give toyota my business

It's not always about the better car, it's the whole package to me, and that's the reason i pick subaru>mitsubishi and so on, if toyota dealers learn how to treat customers right (in my area at least), I'll be back in a yaris before i can even blink :D

I see SmartCar has taken quite a nose dive. The local MD dealerships has like 50 of them sprinkled all around the place. If they would drop tp $10K I would give the Yaris to my son and look into one.

When I heard how much the Smarts would cost and the fuel economy, I had said they'd be a fad. Perhaps that's the case.

those smarts are funny. there are a few of them running arround here. once the snow fell. all of them are off the road. have not seen one for over a month.

news came last night on autoblog that it looks like Mitsubishi is bringing in the B-segment Colt in 3 and 5 door. no word on the Rallyart edition.

Toyota needs to pay off consumer reports like the rest of the car companies... that's its only failing.

Yaris is not cheap... it is an inexpensive car. And the mark up is less than 3%, so there really is no wiggle room on them. Now, if you are looking for a car that will last forever, the 1.5L 1NZ-FE engine has been in use now since at least 2002, in the Scions and in the Echo. There have been almost no engine problemsin ANY of them since they first came out. And most peole claim they get over 40 MPG in them, so I make sure my customers know what they are really getting when they buy one. Has anyone noticed they made Variable Slip Control and Traction Control a standard on them now? Toyota does listen to what people want, and fuel economy was high on the list, with safety being a very close second. Check out the safety on the Versa, Fit, and Smart cars then let me know where Toyota stands.

Description of Cheap = Relatively low in cost; inexpensive or comparatively inexpensive.

So, "Yaris is not cheap... it is an inexpensive car." does not make sense to me
It's pretty much "Cheap = Inexpensive".

Considering the Yaris has been out in the showroom for nearly five years without any major changes (except for minor facelift)--I think the Yaris is holding its own. Plus you have to consider the competition has changed. New sub-compacts have grown.

Actually they are very different terms.

"Cheap" can describe "inexpensive" but really it means low overall quality, low quality materials, flimsy, cheesy, ect. This is how he meant it.

The Yaris is none of these things.

Ah! I see.
Now everything makes sense.
Yaris definitely is not a cheap car

Speaking of cheap cars:

When I bought my 2001 ECHO I also drove a Kia Rio. Now THAT was a cheaply made car. The seats looked like they might last 2 or 3 years. The nuts and bolts looked like they were made out of zinc. Hey it could be CHEAP but still be GOOD. (if it lasted) The ECHO by comparison was several magnitudes of quality better. I think the Rio was $8500 as compared to the $13k I paid for the ECHO. The Rio would probably have lasted five years before it fell apart. So that would make it a very EXPENSIVE cheap car.
In 1974 my father bought a VW beetle for $2400. That was a cheap car even if you converted it into todays dollars. 48 horsepower! But it was a very GOOD car which lasted eight years and 250,000 miles! Although the engine was rebuilt at 120k miles the clutch, carb, alternator, fuel pump, oil cooler, intake manifold, transmission, etc all went the distance.
