Air Filter Replacement
Hello all,
I was wondering when you would need to change your air filter for the first time. I have been experiencing more then horrible acceleration, and was wondering if it had to do with my air filter. I only have 8600 miles on my yaris. I have taken my car to the dealership twice and been told I was crazy and that there is nothing wrong with it. I recently drove a 2010 Honda Accord, and a 2003 Hyundai Accent; both of those have way far superior acceleration to my car. Any Ideas what could be causing such poor acceleration? |

Toyota will tell you 30K miles. I know from looking at it that is way too long for my area. Since it's only $15 at the dealer (that is very cheap for an OEM filter) I change it ever 10-15K miles. I heard on a car radio show that for every gallon of gas burned, 9000 gallons of air pass through that filter-my motivation for changing it and it's so easy to do yourself.
I doubt your filter could be that bad at 8600 miles to cause acceleration problems-maybe try a different brand of fuel. Try driving a similar yaris for acceleration comparision. The Yaris electronic throttle takes some getting use to and can be slow on the up take especially if it's a manual transmission. |

First off, your filter is still brand new at 8600 miles. Second, you're comparing the acceleration ability of a 2010 Accord to the Yaris? Are you serious? The Accord is two classes up. Even the base 4-banger has 177 HP. The V6 has 271 HP (more than 2 1/2 times the Yaris). I also find it hard to believe that the '02 Accent felt much faster. Third, with such low miles, have you just noticed a very recent acceleration drop off? Or have you felt this way since day one? Remember, the Yaris isn't meant to be fast. It's a gas sipping economy car. |

If you live in a very dusty area, I'd replace it sooner than later. If not, just check it once in a while to see how dirty it is and replace accordingly.

Every 2 monthes or so, put the filter (the side that actually filters the contaminates) against a bright light, when no light shines through, replace it. The air filter is a really subjective thing to where you drive, so mileage may not be the best way to indicate when it needs to be replaced.

have a look at it, does it look nasty? If yes, change it.

Regardless of when you decide to change your filter, please consider a reusable replacement for it. Not only is it more environmentally friendly, but it is also much more cost effective. For example, the K&N panel filter for our car costs $44 and a recharging kit good for at least 6 uses costs $11. This means that you get at least 7 filters worth of usage (as it comes out of the box ready to use) for the cost of just 4 paper filters, and after that it costs less than $2 per recharge, and its warranty is for the life of the car.

I change my filter every other oil change or 10,000 miles. Live in some what of a dusty region. Change the cabin air filter at that time also.

About the first month I had the car the acceleration was okay. Its just been getting worse and worse. Ive tried using all different kinds of gas, nothing seems to be helping. What am I supposed to do if i test drive another Yaris and its way better then mine? I have already had this car in twice for the same problems and issues, and I have been told theres nothing wrong with it. The only way for me to describe what I feel when driving is that the car is full of bricks. I am always adjusting my foot and pressing the pedal down harder to get this thing to go.

After the first month did you make any modifications to your Yaris? Wider/taller tires etc.

If you change your driving style frequently. This is probally the problem. Perhaps the first few weeks when you got your car you decided to enjoy it and drive a little aggresively to see how it reacts and handles and takes off. Now that you had it for awile you may have toned things down. The throttle has adaptive learning and changes the curve and may open the throttle less for the same amount of effort you are pressing down on the gas trying to learn your driving style. Now all of the sudden you push the gas hard and it dosnt seem to respond like it used to when you first had it its because it isnt.
You could try a throttle controller that seems to fix the many complaints people have about throttle response and acceleration. Air filter wont be dirty. Too low miles to have any significant carbon buildup that would cause lack of power. Only thing left really is the adaptive throttle. Quick fix would be to disconect the battery for awile and reset it and test drive it and see how it feels.
