June Yaris sales: Way Down ... again

Toyota's image problem looks like its hitting Yaris sales hard: -51% vs. 2009. Down 40% for the year.

That's harsh.

Might be good news for people still looking to buy though. Probably will equate to some good deals out there.

The average consumer might also think this is one of the Toyota cars with the killer accelerator problem.

There's a 2010 silver Yaris sedan at my dealership (brand new) for under $14K. That's a good deal, and uber tempting.

If this keeps up Toyota might discontinue the Yaris. Anyone remember the Starlet?

There's a lot of good deep discounts on the Yaris in my area. Here's one example: http://www.toyotaoftacoma.com/invent...rent=1&size=10

I doubt they'll discontinue it; not with the vast number of subcompacts coming on the market. I do think that they will offer a redesigned version in 2012 (just a guess), though. However, the Yaris does have the biggest drop from this time last year. Year to date, only the Lexus SC (-61.4%) is down further.

The recall issues probably have very little to do with the Yaris's decline.

Toyota's other cars...Corolla, Camry, Prius, Avalon, ect. are all UP in sales. And many of these were recalled, while the Yaris wasn't.

Honestly, I'm scratching my head in trying to figure out exactly what the problem is. But it's certainly not one thing. The damn Nissan Versa continues to gain ground and yet it's butt ugly, has less quality, get's less gas mileage, and is a weaker brand than Toyota. I just don't get it.

Other leaders....

The Honda Fit is down 30%.

The Hyundai Accent is down 56%

You know, you're probably right; I'd say that's a good observation. However, the Corolla, Prius, Avalon have been recently redesigned. The Yaris is, essentially, the same as it was in 2007.

The Versa is puke ugly. The only reason I can think why these sell is you can get them dirt cheap for an entry level new car.

I think the fact that our Yarises always place last in comparison tests of subcompacts in the press has a lot to do with the poor sales.

Correct! My friend bought a brand new 2010 Versa earlier this year. Hatch (4-door), auto, power widows, door locks, remote keyless, cruise control... loaded. The Nissan dealer even through in an extended warranty! Everything less than $12,000!!!

Unbelievable price! But, still a friggin ugly car...

Which is uglier? The Versa or the old Aztek.

It still sells pretty well overall (top 5 subcompacts). However, it's as of late that the sales have been sliding.

I just bought my 2010 Yaris hatchback auto, no power package about 3 weeks ago. The car was purchased by the dealer in October, 2009. It had been sitting on the lot for 8 months and they were quite negotiable, though probably not as negotiable as the Nissan Versa deal above. One other dealer told me his dealership will not order any more Yaris' for stock because the profit margin for both the dealer and Toyota is low and they do not sell very well.

the real reason is that all car sales numbers look like poop.... that cash for clunkers program was running this time last year and now there is no free money.... just like the home buyers credit. house sales are poop vs last year as well. no handout no buy

I contributed this june to the Yaris sales!!!!!!. I agree with Zach...cash for clunkers is what they are comparing it too;Versa is produced in mexico...no comparison to the rising sun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Hooray for cars with VIN numbers that start with J !

Actually I did have a Sentra 2 door a while back, which was made in Mexico, and it was actually pretty reliable.

I wasn't aware that the Versa was built in Mexico. That explains why Nissan can give them away!

Mexico's labor is far lower than Japan's of course. The Yaris costs much more to build (not just labor wise, but it is more expensively engineered). Which is why it is impossible to offer a $9,995 model like Nissan and Hyundai does.

So who cares if Versa beats Yaris sales, it's an uneven playing field. So many people look at one thing - bottom line pricing/biggest bang for the buck.
