yaris airbags

Hello. My 10/2009 Yaris 1.3 Hatch has deployed its airbags. I have been offered a 2008 model airbag system for 500 dollars from a wrecking yard. Dash looks the same. Steering wheel slightly different. Can I use this systemor will i have problems. Will 2008 module work with 10/2009 ECU

Best to wait for member CTScott to respond to this thread. He'll probably do it sometime between now and tomorrow morning. He is the resident guru on all things electrical with this car.

If the center portion of the steering wheel is the same, then the airbag from the 08 will be fine. If the center portion is a different shape, then it will not work without a dangerous drilling and swapping of the rubber cover.

Thanks CT. A few developments today. The steering wheel insert is different. My mechanic fitted the system today. What I have installed in the Yaris at the moment is my original 10/09 module, 2008 model passenger airbag(dash board), 2008 seatbelts and he plugged the 2008 drivers airbag in even though it is physically too small for the 2009 steering wheel. The only fault that registered was the drivers airbag. Does this mean that the 2008 passenger airbag is compatible with the 10/2009 module? Have ordered a late 2009 drivers airbag(correct physical size) and hope it clears the fault. I can only assume there is no difference between the 2008 and 10/2009 passenger airbags. Do you know if they are the same part number? If after fitting the 10/09 drivers airbag no faults appear, is it safe to assume the system is working properly.

Did your mechanic reset the SRS computer after installing the new parts? If the 2008 airbag connected, but is still showing a fault after the mechanic reset the system, then the spiral cable may have been damaged when the driver's airbag popped. The spiral cable is the flexible cable assembly that connects the horn and airbag to the steering column.

Bert66, did you have an accident or did they just explode on their own?

Is it feasible for you to get the whole steering wheel from the salvage yard?

Yes. That would fix the physical size problem of the 2008 drivers airbag fitting into a 10/2009 steering wheel but wont fix the fault code as it's an electronic error signal.

CT. Not sure whether he reset the SRS system as part of his process, however I will ask him. He is away from his workshop today. Would it be normal for the 10/2009 module to be compatible with 2008 model passenger and driver airbags. If the wire you mentioned is damaged, is it easy enough to rectify.

Yes. The airbags modules are cross compatible. The spiral cable is part of a plastic chunk that is mounted directly under the steering wheel. Replacement is easy, but it is a very expensive part if purchased from Toyota (~ $300).

Thanks CT. Is there a website you can suggest where I can order the spiral cable in the event that it is damaged.

From a junk yard is your best bet for reasonably priced, but for a new one, Cheaptoyotaparts.co.uk is a place that I have used to order European Yaris parts.

Thanks mate. I appeciate your help. Will see what the outcome is with the error signal on Monday when he fits the 10/09 drivers airbag. Also, I will ask whether he has reset the SRS system.

Just in case he has not, here is a link to a thread where I posted instructions on how to do so using just a jumper wire:

Thanks again CT. Another problem. The mechanic fitted the drivers airbag suited to the 10/2009. He plugged a device into a port under the dash and showed me that no codes were now shown on the digital display of his diagnostic tool. The problem now is that the airbag light on the instrument panel wont go out when the engine is running. What does this indicate? Is there a way to reset it so the light off. Thanks, Bert

An OBD scanner won't read or reset the SRS ECU's stored codes. A Toyota specific scanner would be required. That's where the simple process I posted the link to comes into play, as it allows one to do so, without the expensive equipment.
