Wrecked.

So yesterday I got into what could possibly be the 3rd and final collision in my beloved Yaris. The car in front of me (the white Hyundai in the first pic) brakes hard as on-ramp traffic is about to merge, causing me to brake hard, causing the van (the silver Nissan in the second pic) to try to swerve and smash my rear-end and push me into the Hyundai. I'm almost certain she's once again totaled, but for good this time. I'm almost convinced the driver of the van was drunk because kind of just smiling and brushing it off when I asked him if he was okay. Ironically, this is almost same spot where I hit a cone strayed by a drunk driver a few years back and damaged my oil filter.

Wow! That is quite the rear smush. Did you get hurt at all with the impact?

That sucks. I've had a similar rear impact, but from a bus which has priority merge, so I had to brake. Damage was just about 1/10 of this and that hurt my head real bad. Bad as in I had to wait a bit before I could react to what happened.

My head snapped back hard against the head rest, but I was fine surprisingly. I was dazed too from the impact for about 2 seconds, despite sitting with the seat all the way back and rarely resting my head while driving. Not sure how much more a rear passenger would've been affected by the impact though. I guess there's something that needs to be addressed about the soft rear end of our cars.

So moving on, today I went to the wrecker to get all my stuff out. Most of it has been in there collecting dust between the last 4 and 6 years, so it took a while (especially crawling in the back seat to pry the mangled spare tire cover off to get to my roadside tools).

So while I was working, I was also silently cussing out modern-day insurance companies for not wanting to cover the cost of frame damage in an otherwise perfectly running vehicle. I came to realize there's a 99.9% chance that it's a total loss and I most definitely will never again be in her presence after today.

I've had many good memories and new learning experiences with her during the last 140,095 miles (minus the 46 miles she had when I first drove her off the lot). I might just end-up getting another second gen. and start again.

In other news, the van driver was released before the flatbed showed up, only to return to scene a little later to bargain with the CHP. I hope he got his...

Wow , that's terrible . Hopefully your neck is fine . Might be a good idea to have a x-ray . My neck is a bit of a mess from 2 rear endings and a frontal ( none our doing ) . The x-ray tech said you've had several car accidents haven't you . Didn't even need to ask , the picture told all .

I just may have to take you up on that advice. It's been two days and I'm starting to feel a little stiffness and soreness in my neck on both the left and right sides, but mostly on the right (delayed whiplash?). Ill give it day and see how it turns out.

Wow. You must have gotten hit quite hard. In January, I was rear ended (pretty hard) by a woman in a Camry (I was stopped...before she even came upon me...waiting for traffic to clear to pull onto a feeder road), and by later that day I felt fine.

Actually, soft front and rear ends (crumple zones) are a good thing... for you. Not so much for the car. I've seen a Miata go head on with a Ford Expedition at about 50MPH (both cars). The Miata ended up about 2 feet shorter (no exaggeration!) but the passenger compartment was intact enough that the doors still opened. Driver and passenger both survived.

As much as I love my Yaris (and all my other cars), I would not want to keep any car that has had major frame damage.

Silverback , I think it took a day or 2 for the stiffness and pain to set in . Then I went . My neck grinds and cracks when turning my head to the left since the frontal . Better to be safe than sorry .

You got hit with almost down to the exact mile I also have on my MM. I'm really glad you're OK and the Yaris did it's job protecting you.

Surprisingly, I feel better today both physically and mentally than I did the last time I posted here. I suppose if this happened in the winter I'd be screwed.

I wouldn't either. Right now I'm just playing the waiting game for the "surprise" news and payout amount from the adjuster before going car shopping.

KROQ got me through my hormonally-chaotic teen years in the 90's. Adam Carolla's brutally honest rants about reality on Love Line helped the most. Not to mention occasionally Kevin & Bean (..Family Christmas...In Your Ass...)

It's almost tempting to go for broke and get an FRS (as if I have a legit reason to), but no I'm definitely thinking of another Yaris. I took the gamble the first time in 2008 and things worked out alot better than I thought over the years, so right now I'm 50/50 between another second gen. and a third gen.
