Poor Man's Sound Deadening - Toyota Yaris Forums

So I'm getting an alarm this coming weekend, working on a hatch popper, getting a spoiler tomorrow, updated the audio in the car (subs in the future) so I figured I'd pull all the panels off to swap out the speakers for all 6.5's and do some "Poor Man's Sound Deadening"

Over the past year I've replaced a House door and a Slider, both times we used This stuff "Protecto Wrap" I was intrigued by how simalar it was to Dynomat, just a tiny bit thiner and with a plastic backing rather than metal.

So, I had a bunch lying around and I did this.

I still have all my panels off, but even still, I've noticed a difference. I've got zero SPL readings to verify that it's better, but from the little driving I did before putting the materials on and after there is noticeable difference. I get less noise from the back of the car, sadly I did not put any on the front doors, so there is still plenty of noise from that, but much less so from the rear or the car.

I'll have some extended highway time tomorrow so I'll get a bit more "feedback" from that, then once the panels go back on (saturday or sunday) I'll have more information and will update back. But so far, it seems to have been worth it (I had the product so it was free).

It's 20 mils thick. That is 20 x 0.0254 mm thick = 0.508 mm

Interesting. How heavy is it? Light is good, the last thing these cars need is weight. If it's light enough, I'd have no problem trying it in my Echo...no sound deadening in it to speak of.

I clicked specs on links page. It said 5.25 depth 50 ft long amd 5.25 wide. Lol I kinda was wondering thanx

It's not super heavy, I didn't weight any of it, but the whole roll can't be more than *maybe* 5 lbs.

So after an hour drive this morning most of which is highway, I can say that even with all my panels being off, there is a noticeable reduction in noise. I'm contemplating pulling the seats and flooring and laying this down to assist with underbody noises.

Since I got the alarm all set (at least the wires to the rear etc) I put the rear panels back in. I didn't take any photos, but I put several layers of medium and high density foam seals around the speakers so that when the panel was put in place, the air from the front of the speaker would not mix with the air from the rear of the speaker. They sound really great!

Road noise is decreased as well with the panels reinstalled. So even with the front door panels off still, the sound deadening on the rear sections, with the rear panels installed has made a noticeable difference in road noise. I'm almost definitely going to lay down a layer under the carpet if I can get the time to do so this summer.
